$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Vexed', 'F')ast forward 5 years. The two workers are no longer in the tech industry. Many of the folks I knew in the industry who had expense accounts you wouldn't believe (I spent one incredibly pleasurable weekend in Tampa entirely funded by an Amazon reps. expense account) are now working at Wendy's or Home Depot. The signs that portended the fall finally couldn't be ignored, and the free ride finally ended.

The funny thing is is that during the 'hot' period between 1998-2000 I was making peanuts grinding away at being a dial-up tech support monkey. I saw people who never had any computer science education brag about their $100 an hour HTML coding contracts after taking a 3 week crash course. Life was passing me by.

I've seen so many layoffs, I became a conspiracy nut. Yeah, I knew it was coming, but to experience it, or see others experience it is a totally different thing. The job market was flooded with unemployed MCSE, CCNA people. By hook or by crook, I was able to stay employed during this time. I still work in the sector today against my better judgment but my passion is for computers. I may not be a genius like Linus Torvalds or Bill Gates (and who is, really?) but I think I'm pretty OK at what I do.

Has the market recovered? Well, I think things have eased up a bit because the unemployed MCSEs have stopped looking for work altogether. We'll never see another boom period again, and of course peak oil will virtually guarantee that we're headed for a 'soft-landing' (Great Depression II) in the best case scenario and global thermonuclear war as the more realistic outcome.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('max_power29', 'I') love the Marcola area. thats where I go to shoot my rifles.

There's also a great nudist colony there... When I was 4 my family lived there, and my dad "accidentally" drove up that road to turn around. According to him, my eyes got big as saucers when I saw all the kids and their parents running around au naturale, and I excitedly shouted "It's the nudie show!! It's the nudie show!!"

Marcola is beautiful. Our place up on the OlyPen reminds me of it a lot. I think us Oregon doomers should get together and compare guns. :-)

Yeah your daddy lucked out. So did you. You're not a neandrethal peasant or a Mongol vassal, or a midevil servant. You have it all. Now cry like a baby when it all goes away. Then you can complain. But not yet.

Had to be said. I could not agree more! For every whiner in the developed world there are 5 in developing countries willing to die to take their place.

Just reading about Oregon from some posters. Nice place. Nothing better than a week or two hiking or ski touring in the mountains. Sleeping rough, no toilet, no running water, plenty of exercise and fresh air. Post peak oil may not be so bad, if someone is willing to keep me fed? ; - )
The organized state is a wonderful invention whereby everyone can live at someone else's expense.

*Laughing out loud* The same thing happened to me near cougar reservoir when I was about 15; so i appreciated it even more.

As for oregonians and their guns I think the Northwest will be really violent at first during a major crisis because of the criminal elements and desperate people lashing and hashing things out. But they will kill each other off and the people that have layed low will come out and Oregon will be a VERY polite place as all the survivors will be equally armed to the teeth.

This is all so true and connot be disputed. I agree completely. In a few years though I don't think the people in the developing countries would care to come here anymore though as it will be just like home.

Oregon is a great place to be, There's plenty of water, plenty of hydro power, its not too hot or cold, there are environmentalists here trying to preserve what they can (i used to despise them before i got a clue), there are some farmers that practice sustainability, we don't have too many laws that infringe on the U.S. constitution, and the voters are allowed to pass whaterver laws we want, even if the feds dont like the laws (portland even kicked out the "joint terrorism task force" that was HILARIOUS, just awsome), and most of the dense population lives in 1 city. I grew up playing in the woods here and I wouldnt want to be anyplace else.

The jingoistic people ask me Where I'm going to move because I am often critical of the government, but i'm like Im not moving anywhere! I think it takes a crtitic to be a true patriot.

Are you asking me? I think they will starve to Death or if the government does not go bankrupt very fast they will become FEMA slaves in concentration camps in return for a little bit of thin soup and white bread.
