I thought I would start a thread that explains to people who have heard how almost limitless oil and coal are still underground. It is hard for them to understand any kind of shortage with these documenting cornucopians printing into polular mechanics and readers digest.

peak oil has pretty much benn proved a no no. Kunstler and Simmons no longer hold any sway. The former seen as the peak oil Richard Hoagland and the latter working for the neocons -!
Yes there is loads of oil in Suadi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Nigeria, Venezuala et al. There just ain't much in the UK, US, Sweden and Europe (Is Sweden still not in Europe economically?) - so we have to look to other fuels as these countries may get nukes and have all this power so I think the west/Bush/Blair created the peak oil myth in much the same way as UFO's were 'created' to confuse and to hide their own projects.

The west realises it needs to get off oil because of where it is and is beginning to do so and high prices and a peak oil mind will lead to conservation in their own countries whilst the changeover takes place.

Grabby, you consistently crack me up...

I've found one of the best ways to argue with the various skeptics is to adopt their argument and then take it to a terminus where it becomes incoherent.

For example, with the abiotic folks, you draw the argument toward the fact that human consumption is outpacing even abiotic replenishment, hence the peak in US production, North Sea, etc. "I wish those little guys pooped faster..."

I might add, too that the general public is under the impression that land, especially land in areas with moderate nice sunny year round climate...land suitable for development...nice beachfront land...is in short supply and thus very pricey....

Well, it is pricey now, but we have hardly even explored the earth's surface....did you know that there a numerouse additional whole CONTNENTS out there, that we have not discovered or mapped yet? There are whole CONTINENTS of prime beachfront property, several of them just off the coast of California....we just need to EXPLORE more, find them and map them, add them to the map of the globe, and then start development of all of this prime property that is just SITTING THERE...waiting to be discovered...
