peakoildebunked retires

Unread postby sameu » Sun 07 May 2006, 12:38:02

I will be checking in from time-to-time, but with a frequency more attuned to the actual danger level of the peak oil phenomenon -- i.e. about once a year. ;-)

I will be maintaining the site as a resource for those just coming to peak oil, and will post important stats or information when appropriate. But this blog will not be the place to get a daily peak oil fix.

I win.

:)
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Well, when you consider this...

The Undulating Plateau of The Peak of Global Oil Production Chart

...and the fact that OPEC says they're maxed out and can't produce any more, and that the Saudis have as much as come right out and said that their long-standing plan to increase production is a promise they aren't going to be able to keep, it's no surprise that our man JD has decided to stop trying to defend his indefensible position.

I'd have a warm and fuzzy feeling right now if it wasn't for the fact that we're all screwed.

Enjoy the victory while you still can for this is no victory. I would have much rather had our side debunked. Now society will decend into an uncertain future of crisis and eventual collapse. In time we may regret with sorrow the day we mocked the cornucopians in their defeat.

So the answer is, yes we all lose.

I don't think JD's blog has that much impact
the fact he stops blogging won't chance the course of society

Yes, but the fact that such a dedicated cornucopian has closed up shop in the face of recent developments is an ominous sign. There's no satisfaction in this for any of us, because it's only the latest piece of evidence that we are, unfortunately, correct.

We all wish we were wrong, don't we?

I see him as a litmus for the rest of society. People are slowly waking up and losing there cornucopian ideals. In the past when ever I brought up PO I would immeadiately be blown off as a doom and gloomer. Now If say something they stand there in fear and bewilderment. They don't have anything to say. They are out of rebutles. That is why his blog is closing down and society is turning into peak oil beleivers. He had no impact on this trend but he is part of it.

Well, well, well. If it isn't "sunshine on my fucking shoulders" John Denver, calling it quits.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')I came to the conclusion that peak oil is a non-event, which has no significant impact on my daily life.

Oil is up by about 600% since the late 90s, So where's all those scary peak oil effects?? You know, the knock-on effects caused by the end of cheap oil.

Call me crazy, but when I step out my front door, things look EXACTLY like they did when oil was cheap. I mean EXACTLY...

...The reality just isn't matching up with the rhetoric.

So this means we won't get to see any more of this type of "past as a guide to the future" extrapolation? What a fucking tragedy!

OPEC says it's got no spare capacity, Ghawar, Cantarell, Burgan, and Daqing are all in decline, Kuwait has half of their official stated reserves, there's no alternatives that can even hope to replace oil in those quantities, and yet everything will somehow work its way out and our infinite growth racket society will continue unabated.

Damn me and my big mouth :P :P

Now come on you lot. After 300 posts I don't think JD has suddenly become a Doomer. He's right, at one stage or another you become convinced either way - either it's a ‘none event’, which it is so far - or all hell and doom will break loose. For the record I'm not convinced either way, the jury is still well and truly out.

In the last 12 months we have moved from some of the most stupid arguments to an altogether more rounded approach and JD's blog has been part of that. There's a lot more people talking about conservation, mitigation, bio fuels, rebuilding urban centres and so on.

I have a feeling that Lorenzo might give people even more run for their money too.
