PeakOil is You

What do you think of democracy?

What's on your mind?
General interest discussions, not necessarily related to depletion.

What do you think of democracy?

I think people should be ruled by strong leaders, not by democratic rule.

0%
I think people and/or their elected officials should be given full power to create whatever laws they wish, under a system of (representative) democracy. The ability of a nation's people to rule itself should not be abridged under any circumstances.

The powers of democracy should be limited by a constitution to protect principles like justice, equality, rights, and liberty.

In adition to limitation by a constitution, I believe a democratic government should be minimalist, only passing very important laws, and generally staying out of mine and everyone's business when possible.

No votes
I believe that, no matter what a democracy or its constitution says, a law may/should be opposed if it supports something I find grossly unjust (like slavery, extreme injustices, etc.).

I'm an anarchist, and believe people should be completely free from the rule of others.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Kod', '.')..shocking.

Where did you hear that exit polling was cancelled? Do you have a link?

Right there in the middle, friend.
What will arrive first? Peak Oil or the Second Coming? My money is now on the latter.

You know, on Slashdot, there seemed to be quite the stir that the machines had almost absolutely no security because they used certain well-known programs known not to be very 'secure'...

Also, they constantly say that security through obscurity (not releasing the code) is not the way to go (which is the way Diebold is doing it)...

or something.. I can't follow programming talk too well.

I trust the computer geeks on this... also, bradblog.com has covered it pretty extensively..

(One interesting tid-bit was on a Dailykos diary once... "Dieb" means thief in German and if you get creative with the english you get - "Bold Thief". There are a few words in English that when you combine two words into one, you drop the repeat (such as 'wherever'). Just a fun little thing about the name :) )

Well, I know a lot about programming, and the diebold thing
is scandalous. If more people really understood what was
happening they'd be quite angry.

No paper trail is a very, very bad idea. It far to easy - trivial really -
to completely modify the votes on a given machine. If done
with disgression during a tight race it's doubtful anyone would
ever know. The fact there's no way to audit the things is very
bad.

I remember reading about all the potential problems with diebold
before the elections, and it would seem the people concerned
with these machines were correct.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Specop_007', 'I') love watching the Democrats cry about the voting machines. It really gives me endless amusement. :)

There's nothing more amusing than stealing elections, that's quite right.

Of course Republicans won't complain when it's their side stealing them.
