Imagine if the commercial had said: "The planet's oil is almost half gone." That doesn't sound too bad to someone who doesn't understand the situation.
I agree, it is difficult to express the story in a 30 second spot... however, I know that I've read Peak Oil discussions on other various (and completely unrelated) message boards and when people say things like "we're almost out of oil!" there will be like 5 other people who quickly jump up to scoff at them.
It's easier to explain the situation correctly in the first place and maintain your credibility (and thus the credibility of your argument) than to have to back-track and be like "oh, well, I don't
really mean that our oil is almost gone but it's just easier to say that to get your attention" ... ya know?
