Oil money builds some nice things... (graphic-intensive)

Culled this from an e-mail I recently received.
There can be no accounting for taste, I suppose...
or common sense, either.

In Dubai, current projects that are being built/have been built:

Image
Burj Al Arab

Image
Palm Island
Three artificial islands in the shape of palm trees will shelter nearly 500 apartments, 2,000 villas, 25 hotels and 200 luxury shops. Palm Jumeirah, the most advanced of the islands, will be completed by the end of 2005.
125 km of additional coastline will have been created.

Image
Burj Dubai

Image
Dubai Marina
New city, costs over $10 billion. Will house 120,000 people.

Image
Dubai City Sports
Immense, 7.5 sq km sports complex will have cricket, rugby, football, etc. arenas & associated housing and development

Image
The World, Dubai

An indoor ski dome, enough said.

Wow, some of that stuff is amazing. However, more then half of it (most of the projects) seem to take place, or finish in the future.

Seems like a pretty good idea to me. Start building very expensive, and beautiful things, and until there finished (many years away) the country would have no interest cutting oil production for any reason (politial, economical or simpily saving it for the future). If they want these beautiful things to be finished, they better keep pumpin, or start pumpin more even, that seems to be the mentality.

Have to admit, snowboarding in a glass dome in the desert?? That would be interesting, would have to make a trip to do that. Anyone know how Americans are treated in Dubai??

Dubai is definitely the Las Vegas of the Middle East...interestingly enough I think it isn't as much oil money as it is tourist dollars now funding development. Sheik Zayed went to great lengths to diversify the economy into one mainly driven by tourism a number of years ago.

Yes, they are trying to be the services/tourism capital of the Middle East, like Hong Kong in Asia. Their beaches got rated in the top 10 by some famous magazine.

The BURJ DUBAI is definatly on my "placed to see before I die" list. If it rained in Dubai it would be snowing on the top of the Burj. (supposedly)

My mom's cousin or something works in Dubai... There is like a 25% white population there, so they obviously are not treated badly. And if you stay at a luxury hotel you can be treated like a king. 8)
