I found my first "Chick Tract" in 1977 on the back of a gas station restroom toilet when I was 11 years old. It scared the crap out of me.
My parents were not religious. We went to church for weddings and funerals and such. I asked my parents about it. They said "Meh, you have to decide for yourself".
The other kids on my street in Louisiana were all Catholic. They said I was going to hell for sure. I asked an old Jewish man who would talk to me on his porch. He said the same thing as my parents.
For 5 years I began collecting bibles and read every Chick Tract I could find and dillegently studied that little red New Testament they gave us at school. I was scared to death.
At 13 I read Hal Lindsay's Late Great Planet Earth which really put the Fear of God into me.
At 15 I hooked up with Jehovah's Witnesses and studied with them, but I could never get over the inconsistencies. In college I spent hundreds of hours in the library reading religious commentary comparing different versions of the bible.
Years later I finally came to the conclusion that there is no way to know something that cannot be known, and quit worrying about it.
I live moderately and try not to hurt others, but those Chick Tracts still make me wince.
