Bringing the troops home to seal the borders and legalizing opiate narcotics would eventually solve all the problems the USA has.

I do like the National Weather Service.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('cube', 'W')hen it gets bankrupted and must pay back not in the form of paper money but instead hard assets like :land, natural resources, factories, ect...

You make an interesting point. I wonder if the countries owning the US debt (eg, China, Japan) will use the same strong-arm tactics that the US has used against LDCs when they defaulted on their debt over the past decades.

No, you've got it all backwards! You are a shareholder in the great US Govt and underwrite the debt.

That's garbage. Shareholders get to direct what the corporation does. I never bought into the corporation and I don't get any say in what it does. The governments relationship with me is a protection racket. You pay us what we say and we won't shoot you or kidnap you and hold you for ransom.

Exactly my point. At their best those groups waste truck loads of money doing nothing. At worst they can only be described as terrorist organisations.

You vote in the CEO and board of directors every four years.

The fact that the CEO and board are more corrupt than that of Enron does not change that.

You know its actually kinda funny sounding if it wasn't so serious. They know we are fucked because of peak oil anyways so why worry about being fucked because of debt default.

Yeah, its all circuses and games now to put on a show for the masses. Maybe they won't notice the ship is sinking.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Laughs_Last', 'T')he federal government is 80% monkey-on-my-back.

But you aren't the typical voter. The American people are getting from their government exactly what they want.

Suppose I am a retired 66 year-old American suburban voter.

Department of Agriculture give me cheap corn flakes and bananas.

Department of Commerce keeps my cheap consumer crap flowing from China and makes my broker behave.

Department of Defense is making my mid-east petroleum reserves safe from Russians and Chinese.

Department of Education figures out ways to keep all those illegal immigrant children off the streets for most of the day.

Department of Energy ? Don't know.

Department of Health and Human Services - get rid of this one.

Department of Homeland Security makes me feel safe from Osama types.

Department of Housing and Urban Development pays the rent on the rental properties I own.

Department of the Interior keeps up the parks I enjoy visiting in my RV.

Department of Justice keeps the mafia out of my pocket and locks up druggies I guess.

Department of Labor starts just enough lawsuits to keep the negros from rioting.

Department of Transportation; gotta have roads for my RV and Buick.

Department of the Treasury collects money to pay my SS check, medicare, the rest of my federal services.

Department of Veterans Affairs keeps the used-up soldiers from rioting.

Corps of Engineers—Civil Works makes new lakes for my bass boat.

Environmental Protection Agency makes me feel good.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration makes me proud to be and Amurkin.

National Science Foundation makes possible those Discovery Channel documentries I like.

Small Business Administration gave my son-in-law a sweet loan.

Social Security Administration transfers wealth from everyone else's pocket to mine. What's not to like?

Americans have exactly the government they want. Politicians are highly responsive to voters. The current State of our Nation is incontrovertable testament to that fact.

ROTFLMAO. See Ohio, Florida, SOTUS, Diebold. Wake Up and smell the Soviet-style One-Party-State comrade. (And you thought right/left/conservative/liberal meant something. Ha!)

Solution to budget crisis:

1. Close the Pentagon and bring the guard home.
2. Close the NSA and all other black budget spy-whore operations.
3. Close the Dept. of Transportation.
4. Nationalize all healthcare and close ALL HMO's, and health insurance sellers/vampires. Ration healthcare according to need and cost efficiency.
5. Eliminate SS payout to anyone with an income > than the median. Make it a safety net. We all have to pull together so seniors don't freeze and starve.
6. Government fraud, waste, pay-off, backdoor Iraq funds looting and bribery become capital offenses. Punishment is assessed on the pertinent Official, CEO and Board of Directors for any corporate linked crime. (Televised, Cheney first).

That should make a good start.

No I don't. There hasn't been a qualified candidate put forth for any of those positions in my lifetime. I'll be darned if I'm voting for any of these sociopaths.

Ya know what Tommy. I never met you and if you want all that crap, you need to pay for it yourself. I'm tired of being terrorized by the IRS to pay for your toys.

As for the "average american", mostly all they want is to sit on their lazy butts and be told what to think by Fox News. They could be easily convinced to want just about anything.

Sounds like the grand ol'US of A isn't the land for you then. Average Joe Sixpack isn't changing his attitude anytime soon.

Trouble is, there aren't any countries which match your requirements from what I can see.

I read somewhere (I think in the book Empire of Debt) that the current debt has crossed a point where even if we were to tax businesses and citizens at 100% of their income for a year, it still would not be enough to cover the budget deficit and we would have to continue to borrow more.

On a simplistic level, there is really only three ways out of this:
1. War - many national debts are written off as a result of war
2. Increased Taxation - self explanitory
3. Inflation - Just print your way out of the mess

At this point, I believe that we are going the direction of number 2 & 3. Number one would mean declairing war against our largest lenders (Japan and China). No reason to do that as long as they are willing to continue to accept our worthless dollars.

While Bush is cutting taxes on the wealthiest, don't forget that AMT (alternative minimum tax) has not be resolved and is sneaking up on many middle and upper middle class Americans. Stealth tax increase.

With helecopter Ben as the new Fed Chairman and the elimination of M3, we are setting the state for a new round of money printing.

Pfffft! I already paid mine last year. Nice thing about getting out of real estate investing and into commodities is that the overhead can be a lot less. No property taxes, special assessments, rent stabilization fees, business licenses, operating permits or any other crap.

Funny thing how I find myself agreeing more and more with Gary Malcolm on the healthcare and elderly tho. I must not be as hard core a libertarian as I used to be

$27,000?

Of the 8.2 trillion dollar debt, isn't 3.8 trillion of that owed to ourselves for repayment to Social Security? Which makes us responsible for 4.2 trillion owed in T-bills etc....

My solution is to find an age to start paying Social Security and Medicare as to erase the 3.8 Trillion owed. Say we start SS at age 71 instead of 65 and do the same with Medicare.

We have about halved the debt.

Inflate the rest and we are there. BTW, one problem: Can the US start inflation? It seems the Fed has been doing there best over the last year, but have not been able to prime the engine.

Just some thoughts....
