Going postal.

Unread postby Andrew_S » Tue 31 Jan 2006, 09:08:21

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A') female ex-postal worker has shot dead six people at a sorting office in California, before committing suicide.

One other person was said to be in a critical condition, the authorities said. All the victims were believed to be postal employees.

BBC Breaking News

What is it with American post offices? Are they especially stressful or is the pay just shit?

(And why isn't a mail worker? I suppose going mail doesn't have quite the same ring to it.)

From the Wiki

There is no consensus as to whether the incidence of workplace murder in the US Postal Service is atypical. Some defense counsels for perpetrators have suggested that a culture of poor or oppressive management leads to mental breakdown and loss of control on the part of employees. On the other hand, in 2000 the USPS released a study which refuted the belief that postal employees were particularly prone to this behaviour, concluding instead that workplace violence at USPS was around the average for comparable American workplaces.

It seems that piss poor management causes people to go insane. When I worked at CompUSA we called it "Going Compostal". I think the postal service is sort of a "Poster Child" for workplace violence in the US but really no more violent than any other. The term and belief that the postal service is violent might also have something to do with John Wayne Gacy who was a famous serial killer in the late 70's and a postman. Maybe someone here can tell us if this term was in use before his time... I'm too young to remember.

The real problem is *neither*.

I used to have coffee with the local Postmaster. The problem he had with his employees is that the work pays so much better than other similar work that the employees literally cannot leave, no matter how much they hate their jobs.

The pay and benefits are just enough better than other menial work they would be qualified for so as to shackle them with "golden handcuffs".

Second problem. No promotions and the work is tedious and boring. The employees know they face a LIFETIME of doing the same boring, unrewarding work with no possibility of promotion, creativity, or change.

That may sound like a good job, but it crushes the workers' souls. At least Wal-mart workers get to talk to people. At least ditch-diggers work in different places. At least factory workers sometimes get to change lines. At least maids can quit if they don't like their environment and work somewhere else with only minor inconvenience and financial harm.

The "golden handcuffs" at the Post Office literally drive some people insane.
Conform . Consume . Obey .

FEDEX and UPS are both giving the post office are run for the money. Have anyone ever heard of a UPS man or FEDEX employee going Beserk with a gun at work? All I have heard about was their stock options outweighing the stress of the job.

Yep!

Michigan police believe UPS deliveryman Jamal Samuels killed his mother and a coworker in an early-morning shooting rampage on Dec. 28, 2005, that spanned three cities in the Detroit area and ended when Samuels, 22, turned the gun on himself.

This phenomina disturbs me.

(this following story was told to me by an 80ish y.o. Barber who remembers when Horses were the main stream transport in Virginia)

In the OLD DAYS, when a good man went BAD he wrapped a towel around his head, so that when the shotgun went off, the brains would not splatter on the walls. Making an easy to clean up for others.

NOW THAT IS CARING!

Today, not only do they harm themselves, but they decide to take out others before they go...

sick sick sick.

New definition for "going postal"

Unread postby Denny » Wed 26 Sep 2007, 13:30:46

This from trhe Barrie, ON Examiner:

"Man upset with mail delivery
A man barricaded himself in his house yesterday after threatening to kill his Canada Post mail carrier and his family because he was unhappy with his service.

Barrie police were called to the Veterans Drive house, at which point the suspect barricaded himself in the home.

Police entered and were confronted by the angry man who threw a number of items, including chess pieces, at officers.

Officers utilized a Taser gun to stun the man. The suspect was arrested and taken to Royal Victoria Hospital where he was held for a psychiatric assessment. "

Chess pieces?

Funny thing was many years ago, I was supervisor in a mail depot and we had one customer who called two or three times a week, claiming his letter carrier was trying to "ruin" him. Claimed the carrier intentionally slammed the screen door and made excess noise in putting mail through the door slot, and purposely scared his dog, and even thought much of his mail was being stolen. He even claimed the carrier was stealing his garden flowers.

So one day, we worked out a scam at the postal station, we put him on hold, and then had another guy inside answer "Queen Street Mental Health Centre, may I help you?"

He never called again after that.

Some customers are not always right!
