I have posted threads about peak oil on various sites www.ls2.com is one for example .I mostly get ignored also, but one time I actually got a really long and educated response ,the reply had lot's of data and links .

However the guy was a little to optimistic for my taste.

Yeah, I'm just scared whats gonna happen in the Southern United States when all the rednecks can't get their fix of watching cars go around in circles for 3 hours.

Wonderful use of pertroleum there. All the petroleum burned by people driving to the race track and all the petroleum burned during the racing.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')onderful use of pertroleum there. All the petroleum burned by people driving to the race track and all the petroleum burned during the racing.

But it doesn't compare to the sheer amount of petroleum used to get people to and from work each day, when a good mass transit system would suffice just as well for that purpose.

The racers are not the problem. Their use of fuel is at best negligable in relation to peak oil.

Oh, I agree with you. The fact we are dependent on individual cars for mass transit in this country is the stupidest policy humans ever came up with.

Are you crazy? Cars are cool. Go wherever you want, whenever you want, and if you're sly, as fast as you want.

Who would be so crazy as to say people shouldn't like that?

Petroleum is like cocaine. You don't frugally stretch it out to last all month till your next paycheck. You don't share it with all your friends. You don't save it for the future.

You do it up as fast as possible for Maximum Effect and deal with the ugly effects of deprivation later!

I dunno. You figure there's probably 10,000 people at a minimum watching one of those races. They probably collectively used a lot more petroleum driving down to the store for beer than is used by the racers.

It may very well that driving will eventually become essentially a spectator sport with only the very wealthy and racers types being able to afford fuel. I would bet in an upsurge of interest in racing as people are less and less able to afford to drive themselves.

Because there is also a substantial portion of people that would rather never have to own a car to get around, and that would leave them free money their own hobbies and pursuits. Perhaps one person might opt for an expensive sports car that they might only take out once a month, instead of having to plunk money down on some high maintenance Suburban Utility Vehicle just to appease their fat, hen-pecking, conformist wives.

Make the car an option, as opposed to a necessity, and a lot of consumption will be cut, and those that do decide to have cars for recreation(not needing something overly practical) will more often have the spare money to have the cars they dream of.

What says you need petroleum to fuel a car? Or to fuel a fast car that does the 1/4 mile in 10 seconds and tops 200 mph, for that matter?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'Y')ou do it up as fast as possible for Maximum Effect and deal with the ugly effects of deprivation later!

Why not marijuana as opposed to cocaine? It's cheaper, lasts longer, you will get a different high that you may find just as appealing(even though it won't compare, since it's a different type of high with its own qualities), but you won't have the deprivation effects, either.

For many, that would be a win/win, except for the cocaine manufacturers. But there would be more cocaine left for those who chose to use it on occassion in the future, and for those that perhaps actually need it for something other than recreation.

Thats the best example of petrol use I've ever heard.

And pretty spot on with the cocaine too.
