$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('sventvkg', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ALBY', 's')pecop is right. torching your SUV is a great way to lose a lot of money. sure the thing is killing you on gas, but the insured amount will always be minus the depreciation which is only growing larger as gas prices rise. i bet most suv owners will lose over 20% if they had to make a claim on their suv.

not if you have GAP insurance just like me and about every other smart person I know...You need this because if your truck is totaled it will be covered lest you still owe thousands after depreciatin. ANYONE Financing a car or truck MUST have this and if you don't or do not know what it is, you are stupid and or uniformed.

I dont have it, and i dont know what it is.
Of course, I also dont make payments on a depreciating object.

Borrow money to buy a CAR??? Something that is worth less as soon as you sign the papers? and depreciates until it is junk?

I guess someone has to buy them new, otherwise there wouldn't be cheap used cars for people like me to buy.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PrairieMule', 'N')o, only uninformed people with poor negotiating skills need Gap insurance...after all it's only $39 a month more.

My GAPS insurance is only $4/month - hardly a windfall for the finance industry. It's especially beneficial if you put more mileage than usual on your car (like 24k/yr - ouch!), causing it to go upside down that much faster. Of course, your results may vary. :wink:

We bought our Jetta at the end of September last year. Its got 37,2xx right now. :shock:
Granted, due to our work schedules this is the primary car for both my wife and I, but still thats a shitload of miles on a car in a year. :oops:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ALBY', 'S')o, you're telling an insurance professional that I'm stupid or uninformed because I don't carry gap insurance ?
Lets have an experiment.
Go torch your SUV and then tell me how happy you are after you file the claim and get reimbursed.

No, I didn't mean it that way. Meant to be a general statement. If I don't have Gap insurance in the event of an accident where my vehical is totaled, I 'll have to pay the difference between the determined market value and what I owe? That's how I understand it, and if so, I say a person would have to be nuts to take that chance rather then carry the GAP insurance. Right?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PrairieMule', '
')No, only uninformed people with poor negotiating skills need Gap insurance. People that pay nearly full sticker price, agree to add on extended warantees to fix what should not break down in the first place. Yes sir I know you are upside down $4000 I'll just roll it in the note after all it's only $39 a month more. Alloy wheels oh sure add that on too-then I will be different and unique just like the car next to me in traffic. Sign here and press hard, we are making 3 copies Chump. The only thing smart about gap insurance is that you recognize you are not smart enough to come out ahead. Gap insurance pays out .10 for every dollar it brings in.
Don't buy a 3 year image, buy a 10 year solution.

And people with less then perfect credit who get crappy interest rates or buy SUV's that depreciate so much in the first couple years that it would be impossible to have the vehical covered in the event it was totaled only using fair market value formula. I suspect a lot of people are in that category.

It is. :)
We have the auto (Tiptronic) and get around 38-40 in the city. Best we've gotten in the city was 42.

ha.
don't take offense sventvkg ( i didn't), the internet makes almost every thought read like a ransom note !
anyway, take it from an insider, insurance in general and auto coverage in particular is a heads I win tails you lose proposition. over the course of your life you should seek to pay as little as possible to insurance companies. the quickest way to turn $1 into $.75 is to get an insurance company involved. Typically, 10% to 45% of insurance premiums, depending on the lines, comprise overhead. Another significant portion goes towards reserves and is kicked up the food chain to reinsurers and finally to the retrocessional carriers where your money is used to finance tilt up strip malls or luxury beach front condo's on a barrier island that should never be built.

That's awesome! The only bad thing that I've heard about TDIs is that the oil changes run like $60 and the fuel filter has to be replaced about every 3 oil changes. Other than that, it looks more appealing to me than a hybrid at this point, esp. when you consider that diesels are time-tested vs. hybrids that have been out for less than 2 years.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eastbay', 'T')he problem with setting it on fire is that the pollutants are very damaging to the environment. I think a more environmentally responsible way to get rid of your SUV would be to push it off a cliff. In fact, I strongly encourage all SUV owners to do this. :)
I don't think SUV owners were thinking about the environment in the first place when they bought these things. Why can't these people claim insurance and say, "hey someone stole my car and pushed it off a cliff." Sure maybe the story lacks a little bit of credibility, but no less then setting a bonfire. My only advice for anyone who wants to do this is to NOT leave your finger prints on the back of the SUV while you're pushing it over a cliff. That would be pretty dumb, but not anymore so then buying an SUV in the first place. :-D

GM to Unveil Compact Diesel SUV...

Unread postby emersonbiggins » Mon 28 Nov 2005, 16:22:00

...in Europe. :o (Yeah, I know what you thought...)

Chevrolet will unveil their new Captiva in Geneva, March 2006.

* - 2.0L, 118 hp or 2.0L Turbo, 147 hp

Too bad GM's global arm has more sense than the idiots in home base Detroit. Not surprising, though...

EM

Chrysler already has them beat with the 2005 Jeep Liberty Diesel 2.8L I4cyl. Kicks out 185hp? Found one on the net at Greenville Dodge in North Dallas lot. It stickers at $23K. Liberty has one of the stiffest suspension and hands down great off road capability.

Yeah, I've read a little about the Liberty Diesel - it looks promising (for an SUV, of course). I wonder what the MPGs on it are...
I thought the GM example was strange because of GM's abysmal record for innovation & implementation here in the U.S. It seems that GM is launching what could be a very successful American SUV into the European market instead. IMHO, it's one of the most attractive GM products that I've seen in a while, relatively speaking.

Can't find engine specs on MSN auto or Autotrader. If I remember correctly the big selling point was the torque and hp on a small I4cyl engine and not the gas milage. That captiva looks like a rebadged Equanox or Aztek.

I think there's a lot of Acura MDX in the Captiva, even though Acura is a Honda brand. I also have a soft spot for the wide Euro license plates, probably blinding me to any major design flaws or piracy inherent in the design. :P

Putting more people in SUVs, diesel or not, seems pretty asinine though...

I have a soft spot too, my mechanic. I have the best Honda/Acura mechanic and I am to scared to switch brands. As far as a SUV goes I have more miles put on ranch roads and forest service trails in my 96' Accord than most SUV's. We also have a 01 CRV and it also does well off road but it needs more power. They switched out the 2.0L engine with a old Prelude 2.4L VTEC back in 02. The sales brochures show it actually towing something AND getting 30mpg on the HWY. Ony problem is they want $24K for a LX and I paid $17.5K back in 2001 for it.
