$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('rockdoc123', 'I')nterestingly enough althougth the thing is damned ugly according to the manufacturer it gets mileage that is as good as most large to mid-size cars. I think it has a five cylinder engine whereas all of the nasty big SUVs have six and eight cylinders. So in terms of guzzling gas it probably isn't much worse than your neighbours Saturn. That being said it is an eye sore and given it's height to width ratio is likely an accident waiting to happen.

Clearly a poor man's Hummer. 16/19 MPG, according to the EPA (which we all know inflates numbers). Surely you don't mean to denigrate Saturn with that kind of atrocious fuel economy. Five cylinders vs. six or eight doesn't mean much when your drag coefficient is like 0.45.

Obviously GM intends them to be driven at 12 mph or less.

Cool site! I am holding out till 2007 when Jeep releases The Compass. 2.4L I4 and kicks out 165hp. Streamlined chassis on a wrangler frame. Hope it's big enough to put 2 kids in the back. Click below for the pic.

I think the H3 is closer to 20 on milage.
That said, its a HORRIBLE layout. You think it looks bad from the outside, trying looking out from the inside. You cant. Visibility from the vehicle is absolutely horrible. It really is the worst I've ever seen of a vehicle. I thought fat A pillars blocked visibility........
If you see one on the road, give it space. Theres a very real chance he does not see you.

Mea culpae, mea culpae, mea maxima culpae. The info I had was from the Hummer website where they state.....expected to get 20 mpg. They of course did not specify highway versus city. That being said still a better than a cadillac methinks.
Not sure why anyone in their right mind would buy a 5 cylinder that sucks up as much gas as a 6 or 8 cylinder SUV.

Yeah, it's better than an Escalade and its other HX brethren. But that's like being thinnest person at the lard-o-rama buffet. Another 5 cylinder that IMHO sucks is the VW 5-cyls in the Jetta. 2.5 liter, only like 150 hp and just 22/30 on the fuel economy. Very disappointing, especially when compared to the 1.9 TDi, which just isn't fair at 35/42.

The number and format of cylinders isn't as significant as engine size until you get into high end performance engines. The amount of fuel consumbed by a vehicle is directly related to its size and drag, ie the work that needs to be done to move it around the planet.

Hey gas is under $2.30 now so buy all the Hummers you want. GM has everyone thinking we will never see $3 gas ever again.

Hummer Overfloweth!

Unread postby Starvid » Sat 12 Nov 2005, 05:09:39

As oil prices rise, even the Americans are rethinking their choice of personal tranportation. The Hummer, known all over the world as an allegory to America (big, strong, ugly, fat, wasteful, paramilitary, pushing small "cars" aside and crushing them) is falling out of favor. Dealers can't manage to sell their Hummers and instead have to stock up on them.
But well, a picture says more than a thousand words.

Pure genius!
I only fear that now that the oil prices are going down again, the SUV will make a huge come-back in US. Ads for them are certainly being shoved down my throat 24/7, so auto-industry seems to be 110% behind them.
And why not, after all, the leaders of the world have guarenteed that oil price will drop to 35 bucks per barrel soon, and stay there permanently. (Sarcasm over).

Actually, $50-60K for a condo on wheels isn't too bad. When there's no gasoline, at least you can sleep in a Hummer more comfortably than in a Toyota Prius.

<<sarcasm off>>

Great pic btw.

Are these actually Hummers waiting to be sold?
I've heard that this is actually just the opposite. Many of these are Hummers that have just been ordered by customers, and are waiting for delivery.
Wasn't demand for Hummers rising rapidly last month?

I went to a Chevy/Hummer dealer yesterday, after seeing those pictures (and smelling blood!) I thought I'd go see if theres a fire sale going on. Alas, much to the chagrin of the cassandras here, there is a WAITING LIST to get an H3.. THere were a few H2's and H1's are scarce.

Now this is really scary. This means that, contrary to common sense, the oil demand destruction is not happening and the PO is going to hit us really hard.

Mount a machine-gun on top and fight a war, that is what a Hummer is for.
In the barracks it should stay, until called for.
