The Postman with Kevin Costner and Will Patton as an evil post-collapse Generalissimo: not bad. The first 45 minutes or so left me cold - too goofy. But I stuck with it and it definately had it's moments of interest. The thing I liked was the premise of an ideal that could spread to rebuild hope and belief. The quirky thing about it was that it began as a sort of grifter scheme by Costner's character who just saw it as an oportunity to get a meal. Interesting flick. It has a cheesy Hollywood ending where everything is back to normal again after the collapse in a few short decades and everybody has smart looking mass-produced clothing again. Something tells me that's not realistic or likely.

On The Beach - from the book by Neville Shute, also remade as a TV miniseries. The original was written in the 50s.

Nuclear Holocaust in the Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere is safe for a while until fallout spreads. Very dark, very moving. No happy ending.

When The Wind Blows - Raymond Briggs

A lovely animation following an old couple who survived the blitz trying to come to terms with modern war at it's worst. It's pathetic in the original sense, trying to barricade their house by removing a door and painting the windows white.

I saw Mad Max - Beyond Thunderdome last week. Set in a post nuclear Australia, a few years after collpase of society due to oil scarcity - Mad Max I & II.

Some interesting ideas. Society largely on barter trade. Renewable energy is methane from pigs and the fight for control over that energy source. People with technical know from the previous age able to hold others ransom with their knowledge and they in turn are being fought over by those wanting their expertise.

If you thought The Postman was even slightly interesting, pick up the book - it is infinitely better than the film.

I watched Flood at the weekend, the new(ish) English film about London flooding.

Acting is terrible throughout but an easy disaster movie to watch. The best bit is right at the beginning though so if you can't be bothered just watch the intro.
