Saving money

Postby Dukat_Reloaded » Tue 08 Nov 2005, 03:11:47

Hi all, I got some good tips for you to save money.

I noticed people on this forum were talking about eating fish and how good it is for you, namely Salmon. Well I know a fish that is cheaper salmon and tastes pretty good to boot as well. I eat the savings brand Mackrel from the 425grams cans. 1 can costs $1.26 and aloaf of bread from the savings store also cost just $1.19. With a can of mackrel I can make 4 sandwiches which are also very healthy and high in protein. If your on a diet, or just want a nice hot nurishing drink, you can get savings brand of soup for 93cents for a 4 pack, flavours are beef, ham & pea, cream of chicken. The ham pea & cream of chicken are my favourites. I also know of special less than $1 meal that almost everyone was flabbergassed when I tell them how much it cost, because it's such a hot, tasty & nurishing meal. What you do is get savings brand crumbed fish (6 portions) $2, frozen bag of mixed vegitables $1.50, some potatoes fresh or instant mash $1. Now put one fish portion on each plate, put mixed vegetables on the plate, then potatoes on the plate, put in microwave until hot and there you have it, feeds 6 people for under $5. I would also like to recommend Rolled Oats, now these are great for breakfast or a snack any time during the day your feeling peckish. Probably the quickest and the cheapest is instant or quick rolled oats, you just pour some oats into a cup and add hot water and there you have a quick simple meal, and a 1kg of rolled oats costs less than $1 for the savings brand, and will last ages. Bags of pasta are quite cheap, cheapest was 59 cents for 500grams, boil pasta for 10 mintues, drain and add tomato sauce, easily feed afew people. Noodles are also cheap, expecially the savings brand and you can choose from many flavours like chicken, beef and even more exotic flavours, which will allow to not get so quickly board of them. Cans of baked beans are 35cents each and rice is $3 for 3kgs. Cook some rice, then add whole can of baked beans, the excess sauce will soak into the rice making it taste wonderful. If you follow my tips, I'm sure you'll save acouple of thousand dollars a year on your grocey bill, and it'll save you alot of time also.

man, i'd love to eat really cheaply like that - my wife would go off her trolley though. its not fair - i want to live a low consumption life and she wants to live a high consumption life. sigh.

she'll have no choice but a low consumption life soon enough when i quit my high paid job and become a manual labourer... not sure how happy she'll be about that though.

It would be ironic if you died of consumption.

my personal favorite dirt cheap meal lately

rice - giant bag cost me about $5

1 can of beef or chicken stock 70 cents or so, it's possible to get it cheaper in giant cans but I'm out of freezer space to store it once opened.

1 bag of frozen vegetables cheap, fresh peas and carrots from the garden are cheaper though ;)

cook the rice in the stock with some water.

boil the veggies in water

mix and eat.

I also add fried ground beef or chicken and cheese because I hate my heart ;)
shame on us, doomed from the start
god have mercy on our dirty little hearts

There is an urban myth about a student who ran out of money due to lifestyle and tried to live purely on porridge and ended up with scurvey.

My fav cheaper meal is carrots/potatoes/onions/celery and a small hunk of pork put in the crock pot. I bought up 100pounds of potatoes for less then 10 bucks and the carrots were very cheap too...onions are always cheap and celery stays the same prices for the most part. You could substitute the pork for beef/buffalo/venison/etc. A cheap GOOD meal thats done in about 6 hours in a small crockpot put on the low setting.

Or else eat rice and frozen veggies.. Cook the rice/cook the veggies seperate...add some oil and some lemon pepper...maybe some chicken...serve it up! yummy..

1/4 of ground Chuck beef(80% nice and greasy) $.75
1 tablespoon of cumin
pinch of black pepper
egg noodles ($.10)
1 tablespoon of flour.
worstershire sauce or salsa

3 meals under a$1
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Another thing that is cheap and tasty. Frozen Garlic bread can be brought cheap, at 99cents for frozen two loafs, put one in the microwave for 45 seconds and you have a piping hot tasty meal. I cook everything in the microwave, even if the pack says to cook in the oven, I still cook in the microwave because it's easier and a oven uses far too much power.

Actually that wouldn't be an urban myth. If the guy or girl ate nothing but porridge, they Would eventually get scurvey. Scurvey is a disease caused by lack of Vitamin C. So, if you ate only porridge, how could you Avoid getting scurvey? I mean, if you ate even an orange a month you would be fine probably, but never ANYTHING with C in it? 8O

bakeries bake bread every day and toss the day old bread in the dumpster in back at the end of every day. this is a great source for free bread! chip distribution centers toss out bags of chips that are close enough to the expiration date that they cant distribute them to stores, again check the dumpster: free chips! i think you get the idea now, use your immagination for other sources of free food! and always use proper ediqutte, never make a mess outside of the dumpster and leave some food for the next person who comes by, they might be homeless.

for non-food related things how about these tips: ditch the car. if you live an hours drive from work, ask yourself: why did you choose to live so far from work? you could move closer to work or change jobs and walk, ride a bike or take mass transit to work instead. cancel the cable and the internet (use it at the library for free!). stop watching tv and stop listening to the radio, the worst thing about these two is that they expose you to comercials (not to mention bad music and mindnumbing tv programs and idiotic network news), while you may not believe me simple exposure to ads is enough to increase your likelyhood to spend money, its a fact. cook all your own food, dont eat out! insulate the house as well as you can afford for the winter, keep the heat as low as you are comfortable with (wear a sweater!). get a jacket for the hot water heater. shower only once a week, saves on soap and hot water, while the culture tells you this is wrong really they are just trying to steal your money for soap and shampoo, you will not smell bad at all to other people (trust me on this! i dont even wear deoderant and people are always suprised when i tell them how rearely i shower because i dont smell). decrease the amount of clothes you wear, for example i get by wearing one pair of pants, 2 tshits, 2 changes of underwear and socks, you may not be so advertous, but the point is to decrease loads of laundry. the same thinking can apply to dishes, decrease the number that you use (pack the rest away!). brew your own wine and beer, its cheaper and more fun and is a really interesting hobby. the basic idea is, if its broken learn how to fix it! if you need something: learn how to make it! this will decrease your trips to stores to buy things and save you money not to mention giving you lots of interesting hobbies and endless fun! in the long run, owning your own home can be cheaper since you dont have to pay rent! myself, i rent and i get by on less than $300 a month (200 for rent alone). be innovative! after oil runs out youll have no other choice, this is good practice so that when that day comes youll be ready!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'c')ancel the cable and the internet (use it at the library for free!).

I'd never do that sorry, it would save some money but I believe the internet is one of mankinds greatest inventions. Simply to discard this would be too much of a loss. The amount of free resources you obtain make up for the costs in use. Using the internet at a libarary is the same as reading books at the libarary but never borrowing to take home. Perhaps if you wanted to save money switch back to dialup. No I think being cheap is about being able to discover being cheap in things which you can afford to be cheap in. It almost matters not a quark if your food is expensive or cheap, so long as it's healthy, the internet is something that if your mind is active, it's a cheap subsitute for subscription magazines (which allways better information can be found on the internet anyway for free). Honestly to go back to reading the daily paper, watching the tv news, and the radio presentators personal opinions on topics is too barbaric to go back to. Because of the internet I do not watch tv or read the newspapers anymore. I get newsfeeds which are updated hourly for free. I aggree with everything you have said except for ditching the internet.

its a matter of opinion. myself, i dont need the internet in my house. i do agree that is a wonderful tool, but i find when i have it at home that i just waste hours on it not doing anything useful (like writing stuff on message boards...). the internet really can be just as much a waste of time as tv. but when i use someone elses internet, like at a computer lab in the library, i actually use it to find information and get something done. i think its important to say though not having the internet at home does not lead to watching network news or reading the paper, in fact i think its a really bad idea to use those medias at all. i do get the sense that you sir are a news junky, i know what its like when i first got the internet i spent hours each and every day reading nothing but the news! i still read allot of news whenever i use the internet, but ive pretty much overcome my addiction (and my use of the internet for much more than email) -its saved me a great deal of money, time and the general enjoyment of life is so much fuller.

Yeah you might have a point. I guess it really depends on how you use it. I do waste too much time on the internet which would be better spend.
