If you have access to lemons, slice one in half, remove the pulp from one half and use the skin shell like a diaphragm. The skin shell cups the cervix and acts as a physical barrier as well as chemical as the lemon kills sperm (and even some STD's).

@ all: Thanks for all the replies. I guess I was just wondering if anybody had a stash of condoms next to the 200#s of rice, flour and beans.

@ cynthia: I will definitely go for the snip but timing is everything. I thought we had decided to be a one child family (our daughter is 2), but recently my wife has been giving me the tap on the shoulder (you know the one ) and talking about a second. I do not have sufficient conviction to deny her if our situation permits a second child and she really wants one (hey, I sure do love my daughter and am sure I would love a second as well). Besides, while I believe in preparation and have an overwhelming sense things in the world are going downhill, I do not intend to live my life from under a rock. I will continue to dream about the future, even if I do worry more about it now than I did in my 20s.

I'm a fan of the fertility awareness methods (effective, no side effects, easily reversible), so I thought I'd post a link to the Wikipedia article on them:

Ritter~

Older guy i use to work with said that his uncle always kept a roll of plastic food wrap and rubber bands under the front seat of his car. Could be a possibility?

Although he went on to tell me the guy ended up having 5 kids...so buyer beware.

My doctor told me last week that BC is on ly 97% effective and is toxic of course. he suggests an IUD. although even up here they cost $300. they are good for 10 years so although they cost a lot up front you can make up for the cost down the road easily. and they are 99% effective.

this way you don't have to worry about using saran wrap or long term escalating costs of BC. One brand name you can look up is Mirena. here's a link to a slightly less biased take on them

This is a very difficult thread. It is almost impossible to avoid beeing offensively explicit, but I'll make a try!

When it comes to that vital part of life -intimacy- there are a lot of variations to explore beside the pretty obvious "classical" one. Very intensive experiences of intimacy can be achieved without the risc of generating offspring. Some people claim that such practices actually have deep support in the Bible. Just have a second kid soon, if so inclined, and get the operation!!! Quick, safe, easy (especially for your wife) and effective!

IUD's aren;t perfect either, one of my sisters used that approach, got pregnant a few months later and suffered minor complications to the pregnancy because the IUD was slightly interfering with the placental development. Turned out OK, she now has a grandchild from her firstborn IUD defeating child ;)

Nothing is 100% safe and effective unless you go for the old snip or clip. My first was born through 3 different kinds of contraception.... no joke, no exageration. it can happen no matter waht. even vasectomies sometimes "don't take".

I've got a 3-year old who is proof of that. 1 in 10 million chance. There is no such thing as perfect birth control.

There have been some problems with vasectomie that involve long-term pain in the testicle area. And nobody knows why this happens and there are no remedies. This from doctors at Kaiser-Permanente. Not a large proportion of the operations but significant.

Absolutely the best. Complete and utter freedom without worries, at least for a monogamous couple. I highly recommend the "Open End" variety, which can be hard to find but well worth it in avoiding potential complications of the traditional "closed on both ends" variety. I live in progressive CA, and even so, I had to drive 8 hours 1 way to get the procedure. Not cheap either, but it was the best money I ever spent. Do the homework, you'll find out what I mean.

Now, as for other "romantic" preparations, what kinds of things do couples enjoy that will be hard to find after a crash? A quality lube like AstroGlide? (never cared for KY). Silicone toys that are easy to sterilize? Books and magazines? Rechargable batteries for toys that go "bzzzzzz" and a solar charger for them? Replacement toys (they tend to last only a year or two). Time to start stockpiling, perhaps!

Let's face it, when the networks are off the air, the bars and restaurants are closed, and the newspapers stop being delivered, a board game can only hold your attention just so long, and people do get bored. However there's one activity that seemingly enjoys perrenial interest... 8)

Best of all it is free and requires no electricity!! Although electricity can be fun too....
