$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('NeoPeasant', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('DesertBear2', 'T')oday it takes a lot of courage to take on the jesus mythology. But it's about time someone got busy and spoke the truth about all this old propagandistic religious buffoonery.

There's one thing worse in America than taking on Jesus. And that is to have the nerve to question the self-evident, unambiguous, wholesome goodness of economic growth, higher incomes, and more spending power for all Americans.

That was an excellent blog posting. We need to get rid of the bullsh*t known as "political correctness" in this issue. The fact is that the fundies are willing to be rude blowhards, use violence, absolutely anything they think will advance their position. That's why they're winning, they don't bar any holds, while the thinking people try to be reasonable! The idiocy of superstition needs to be ATTACKED and driven out like the foul demon it is. And just like the fundies, we need to stop being so damn reasonable. These wingnuts do NOT have a right to their fairy tales when they use them to justify invasions, torture, and all the rest.

You are mixing your Marx's

Karl Marx said "religion is the optiate of the masses"

Groucho Marx said I wouldn't join any club that wanted to have me as a member. (I believe that was echoed by Einstein as well.)

I liked landover baptists "waht would Jeasus do" thong. that was priceless.

What, exactly, are you suggesting bbadwolf?

You refer to yourself as reasonable. But, this post sounds anything but. What is apparent from most of these posts is that most of you haven't bothered to learn much (if anything at all) about those things you deride, specifically Christianity.

At the very least, the original blog acknowledge the life, crucifiction and very real death of Jesus. There is a substantial amount of evidence to proove that Jesus lived. Most historians (Christian and not) agree. You don't want to acknowledge Him as the son of God?

Don't. But, to say he didn't exist is denying the historical facts.

No Christian will say to you, "Believe or die." If they do, they're misnamed because they are not Christians.

No, I try to forget as much as I humanely can. (misworded on purpose).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')t the very least, the original blog acknowledge the life, crucifiction and very real death of Jesus. Which historians are you talking about? the ones your pastor said all acknowledge Jeasus lived? My foster father went through theological college while I lived with them and became a pastor with the united church. and from what I understand, they agree that a lot of the events depicted in the bible (New testament) likely happened. but just because those events took place doesn't mean that Jeasus himself therefore lived.

As for the old testament a larger number think that the places and major figures depicted were there etc. but that's as far as most of acadamia goes or will verify.

"as for the very real death of Jesus", no one can historically agree about his death or ressurrection. There are no other historical accountings that prove that someone of his "importance" was crucified to verify the bibles accounts independantly. all his followers have is a story that they have perpetuated down through the centuries.

there is nothing anywhere except the bible where they continue the myth that he was "ressurected". it is however, more likely that his body was taken away (if his death did indeed happen) to keep them from having a body to wail and gnash their teeth over, thereby making the martyr thing more of a nuisance to TPTB.

this is what has led to so many saying that his crucifiction was more of a allegorical construct... cause there is no proof. or basically as I believe, its a fairy tale told to get kids of all ages to behave themselves or they will go to hell.

but as I've said to many times... what ever you need to fulfill yourself emotionally, mentally or to support you through lifes rough patches... is fine with me. If you need a crutch, use one. Just don't expect me to put aside reason and suddenly need "saving" or fall in line with this myth.

My summary of the best-seller of all time is:

Genesis - fables and oral histories

Remainder of Old Testement - plausible history with some exageration for effect

Psalms - summary of beliefs

New Testement:

Gospels - four contradictory accounts of a good-guy-rebel with shaky back references to Old Testement to attempt to prove he was the one everyone was waiting for

New Testement except the gospels - attempts at formalising the doctrine of a new church

Revelations - scary story to get your children to be good

Matthew, Mark and Luke are sucessive revision of the same text.

If you look before Matthew you see Thomas

http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/thomas.html

The oral tradition was written down as the "saying gospels" which where revised into a text had a narrative added with the sayings embeded in that.

Yeah..I know. I guess I was ranting a bit. It's frustrating that the wingnuts are able to turn the very structure of society against itself. Take the KKK for instance. Intelligence would indicate that we should have exterminated those maniacs but "innocent till proven guilty", yadda yadda and they kept on butchering people. All these religious nut jobs in society and we keep trying not to sink to their level and they (correctly) view it as weakness and use it to inflict further horror. It's tempting to think that if we could eliminate religion we could also be rid of the violence that comes with it. In reality though, I suspect that we'd just find another reason, either that or re-invent religion to justify our love of violence.

Erl...there is no "history" to indicate that JC or any god ever existed. There is the bible of course, but that is a completely circular argument. As a former agnostic who occasionally felt guilty, I challenged my beliefs and investigated this issue quite thoroughly and I no longer have any questions or doubts. All religion (the belief in gods) is nothing but fairy tales and in the last century it has hijacked the concept of morality such that most religious people think they are the same thing and that if you don't believe in THEIR god you must be amoral. This is almost the furthest possibe extreme of stupidity.

There is some old guy in the sky with a beard and he's going to throw everyone who doesn't believe in YOUR version of him in hell so they will burn in flames for all eternity and be incessantly tortured etc. And HE LOVES US!! Yeah right. And when I was a kid, I believed in the bogey man in the closet. I grew out of that too.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('uNkNowN ElEmEnt', 'W')hich historians are you talking about? the ones your pastor said all acknowledge Jeasus lived? My pastor? I have never discussed the historical evidence of Jesus death with my pastor. We have, of course, discussed the faith based aspects of this event. But, historical evidence? No, that's not his provence.

Evidence, and the analysis thereof, is my stock in trade. And there is plenty regarding the life, trial, crucifiction and death of Jesus.

Historians? Let's pass right by the four gospels, I kind of anticipate what your response will be to those. But, I will point out what I have said before on this site: Luke was written about thirty years after the death of Christ. Luke was a physician, sent by his employer, to ascertain and record what had happened in Jerusalem thirty years earlier. Luke interviewed witnesses and compared notes to the two earlier gospels: Mark and Matthew. Then he prepared his own historical account. He was not a witness to the actual events. He recorded the statements of witnesses.

Okay. Flavius Josephus. Jewish zealot. Jewish general. Fought against the Romans during the war of 66-70 A.D. Definitely not a christian convert. Defeated by the romans, he was captured and found favor with the Romans. Later he was taken to Rome and there became a Roman and wrote many volumes of Jewish history. Here are two versions of what this non-Christian wrote about Jesus:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')t this time there appeared Jesus, a wise man, if indeed one should call him a man. For he was a doer of startling deeds, a teacher of the people who receive the truth with pleasure. And he gained a following both among many Jews and among many of Greek origin. He was the Messiah. And when Pilate, because of an accusation made by the leading men among us, condemned him to the cross, those who had loved him previously did not cease to do so. For he appeared to them on the third day, living again, just as the divine prophets had spoken of these and countless other wondrous things about him. And up until this very day the tribe of Christians, named after him, has not died out.
[Jewish Antiquities, 18.63-64]

Here's another version:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')t this time there appeared Jesus, a wise man. For he was a doer of startling deeds, a teacher of the people who receive the truth with pleasure. And he gained a following both among many Jews and among many of Greek origin. And up until this very day the tribe of Christians, named after him, has not died out.

There is also the letter from someone named Pontius Pilate to his boss, rendering a report of certain goings on in the provence he was governing. His boss, by the way, was Tiberius, emperor of Rome. That letter no longer exists. But...there are others. Contemporaneous with Pontius' letter that refer to his letter and the events he relates. I will find the name and link for you and post it subsequently.

You said:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 't')here is nothing anywhere except the bible where they continue the myth that he was "ressurected". it is however, more likely that his body was taken away (if his death did indeed happen) to keep them from having a body to wail and gnash their teeth over, thereby making the martyr thing more of a nuisance to TPTB.

That is certainly the story the sanhedrin promoted. Oh, and they were a neutral bunch.

Here's a link to another non-christian historian:
Livius.org

You may not believe in the resurrection of Jesus. Most people don't. And we can certainly argue the evidence and proofs of that event (500+ witnesses). But denying that Jesus ever lived? You gotta be willfully ignorant of the evidence to believe that.

One more thing that I am reminded of after seeing killJoy's post re: excavating the Bible.

(Interesting title, by the way).

The archeological evidence that surfaces almost always reinforces the story as related in the four gospels.

Prior to 1961, skeptics didn't even want to acknowledge the historical existence of Pontius Pilate.

And then, oops, we found an archeological ruin with his name and dedication carved in it.
