Is waffling back and forth normal?

Postby Atlantean_Relic » Tue 25 Oct 2005, 00:09:56

I read one thing and I'm kissing the modern world goodbye then I read another and get the bad feeling I'm stuck in cubicle world. Honestly I wouldn't miss cubicle world. It just feels hollow to me. And no I don't want to eat your grandmother :P . I just feel anything could have more substance than the current house of cards.

Also, It just bugs me there is no set in stone idea for when. It makes me feel like I've been handed a map of Sweden written in Swahili and been asked to find a sushi bar.

Well I got tried of just lurking, so in additon I guess, I'll say hello!

Welcome,

On the positive side there is plenty of information here to back up what ever opinion you want.

In ten years time we'll be able to read our posts, apply the appropriate reinterpretation, and prove that we were all worthy of the name Nostodamus.

Welcome!

I think it is very normal (at least for the not so normal POers), also about the opinion how soon and how hard PO will hit us - I guess you will both have your doomer and cornucopian moments....

However, in any case be very very careful what you wish for...

Since discovering peak oil theory and confirming my instinctive fears of the the unsustainable life we live, I've been browsing these forum threads to complete distraction. I'm feeling totally guilty about the amount of time I spend during work hours reading threads and articles on peak oil but I'm thinking "what the hell am I doing in this cubicle! I should be setting up my little rural patch of permeculture, composting, gardening, etc. etc. like so many of the threads are saying.

BUT I CAN'T JUST GIVE UP MY JOB AND GO SPREAD SOME SH*T ON MY GARDEN!

I'm stuck in the machine just like most of the people in the developed world.

To answer the question "Is waffling back and forth normal?" .... yes it helps get the angst off the chest.

At this moment I believe that mankind is doomed. While a couple people out there will try and change most of the world will not. People believe that they are the highest form of life in the universe and thus it is their right to destroy this planet for their own well being. If we do find a cure for the peak oil my hart goes out to this planet and all life on it. The world will keep going as it has for the past hundred years, more houses, more people, more Wal-Mart’s and less and less wildlife, the world is dying and we do nothing to stop it. No I do not wish to see a world were we have found a way to grow exponentially, and I do not think that people will ever give up this dream.

I have a feeling most people want Earth to look like Corusant From Star Wars. I never figured how you could live on a planet covered in concrete.

Essentially, everything would be imported from other worlds.

Unfortunately, we don't have that option.

I have to agree with Ravensburg, if its isn't PO then it'll be some flu virus or Climate Change or war...but there is no way that what we are doing to this planet can go on indefinitely.

Waffling means you haven't been brainwashed.

Critical thinking means giving up certainty.

Like, today I was thinking:

"Here we are in the middle of 4Q05, the period peakers were screaming like banshees about--

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')T'S COMING RIGHT AT US!

--and yet oil and gas prices are down, the stock market is up, natural gas supplies are up, Katrina and Rita didn't cause a meltdown, a LARGE SUV JUST DROVE PAST MY PRESENT LODGINGS, and I'm thinking PO is a bunch of shit."

Tomorrow, I might be stocking up on bullets.
Peak oil = comet Kohoutek.

Yeah, tonight at work I found out they are going to be hiring a whole bunch of new people for 2nd shift. The reason is that they are getting more business than they can handle right now. 8O

I'm thinking I must be crazy cause I was sure the economy isn't doing well.

But I'm still convinced peak oil is real and the ramifications are going to be disastrous.

I'm pretty sure waffling is normal for us POilers, but just being a POiler makes you a very very itty bitty minority. Soooo... you arent normal.

Anyway, welcome to the forum. There are a lot of good people here. Take everything with a grain of salt, and apply what you can. Most people are here to help. In my 3 months of lurking and posting i've only bumped into a few trolls.

My suggestion (which will most likley change sometime within the next hour ;-) stupid waffling), is to do what makes you happy. If your cubicle job is not working, change now.

Unless you are stuck in the system (due to high loans or other situaitions), in which case make the best of the situation now, realize its not always going to be that way, and try to visualize what you can/will do in every PO scenario you can imagine; from armagedon to holy crapola a magic fairy/alien/God Himself just came down and fixed it all.

[B]Note:[/] I've found that these visual excersises while making me feel better about my situation 75% of the time. Send me into anxiety mode sometimes. ;-)

Anyway welcome again.
