Why You Shouldn't Be Concerned About Entropy

Postby VoiceOfReason » Fri 17 Sep 2004, 21:53:43

Top 10 Reasons This Entropy Thing is a Non-Issue:

1. Our leaders most likely know about this and are already making plans. They problably haven't told us simply because they don't want to tip their hand to their political opponents. But rest assured, when the time comes, the solution will be offered.

2. The Second law of thermodynamics is just that: a law. And laws were made to be broken. They used to say we would never solve the problem of powered flight! But the Wright Brothers proved them wrong! What makes you think we won't prove conventional wisdom wrong again?

3. The market. It's so simple folks: if this thing "entropy" is actually even a problem, whoever solves it will be a billionaire! Greed is a powerful motivator and will likely motivate us to solve this thermodynamics issue.

4. Technology. Look at all the technology around you that can solve problems that didn't exist just a few years ago. We are developing solar nanotechnlogy, next-generation hybrid vehicles, space based solar arrays, and working on ways of extracting helium 3 and methane from outer space. And let's not forget that cold fusion is now being looked at again! We have tons of options available.

5. If you live in the US, you live in the most powerful military country ever! We defeated Hitler. I'm sure we can defeat "entropy."

6. If there is a dieoff, it will hit the third world first. By the time entropy kills of the third world, it will be tired and the US with all of its technological might will likely have found a solution.

7. Worse case scenario, the government institutes work camps while we come up with a solution. With hundreds of millions, if not billions of human minds working on solutions, there is no way entropy stands a chance.

8. Look at the people who insist entropy is a big issue for you to worry about. They're all either selling books or are nutcases with fringe beliefs. If you want to follow people who insist on believing such nonsense like maybe we aren't being told the truth about 9/11, then have at it. But I'm staying with the sane rational people who are working on solutions.

9. Once the world wakes up to this problem (if it even is a problem) people will come together and work as a unit to deal with it in collective, cooperative fashion. Have some faith in humanity, will you?!

10. If entropy turns out to be a problem, it will actually be a blessing as it will give rise to all sorts of new industries and technologies who will deal with it.

This age of entropy might end up being the greatest age of all!

I can't bear to respond...

takers?
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I'm spending a few seconds writing this in order to suggest that nobody else should waste their time responding to the above piffle.

Holy shyte where to start? How about my favorite subject, WWII. I love that war in the sense it was the last true war with hero's and villians.

We didnt defeat Hitler or Nazi Germany, and quite frankly were very VERY lucky we didnt get our ass chewed up, spit out, kicked in, set on our head and sent back home.

At the risk of annoying....actually, I think the original post has some amusing and enjoyable irony. Notice that the arguments advanced against entropy are the same as those advanced against Peak Oil - and, of course, we all know that entropy really can't be evaded.

TOP 10 Reasons Why We Will Defeat Gravity!!

10. We'll attach giant rocket engines to the Earth, and burn them until we fly by a black hole that will counteract our gravity!

9. We are really powerful, with lots of weapons, so we could blow it up!

8. We'll drop people off buildings to solve it, and find that one person who can really fly, because we've got lots of them..

7. We watch a lot of McGyver

6. We send missles into orbit! Gosh!

5. Balloons do it, so why can't we? Just suck a lot of helium!

4. Since we have lots of third worlders, we can have them blow REALLY hard on us to lift us permanently off the ground!

3. Aliens have learned how, so why can't we?

2. We make an inane post about "solving entropy"!

1. We are smarter than Newton ever was. Apple, schmapple!

There are no laws that say we can't fly. Science is about limits. Technology is about working within those limits. Humans are flesh and blood. This is not the matrix. Entropy is a given. It will not be defeated. Our leaders are much stupider than they appear. Their political instincts may be sharp: everything else about them is as dull as the finish on a car that has just passed through a category 5 sand storm.

Give it up. You are hopelessly confused.

VOR, if you made your post in earnest, I'll applaud you, but ask you to dig a little deeper into the subject. Your thoughts do provide insight into what we face with conventional thinking, though...

Besides, you're probably in 10th grade, so you're trying.

If not, begone.

Fair enough?

If anybody noticed I think the Voice of Reason dude was being ironic :) on the subject of entropy.

Maybe 42 will be the solution to entropy, as 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything :).

People, people:

It's so simple: let's say this entropy issue actually turns out to be a problem - which I'm not convinced it is because the people touting it all seem to be of dubious origin, if you know what I mean - the solution is so simple!

Colonize space.

All we have to do is put 250,000 people per day into cryogenic storage and then send them into low earth orbit for a few hundred or a couple thousand years while the scientists down here on earth come up with a solution to entropy.

Like I said in my original post, we've already got people researching/developing fuel sources from space and technology like space based solar arrays.

I"m sure our politicians have thought of things along the lines of what I'm proposing. After all, you don't get to Congress or the White House if you don't have a good head on your shoulders!

Really all this talk of entropy, energy flows, and the resulting die off is just the rambling of mentally unbalanced people who think they can make a quick buck off spouting scary, scientific mumbo-jumbo.

Like this Hubbert guy I've been reading about! He's going to roll over in his grave when he realizes that the "Hubbert Curve" turned out to be a big nothing due to humanity's amazing ability to adapt, cooperate, and implement advanced technological solutions to the problems we face.

Like I said: cryogenic storage + low earth orbit = entropy solved.

OK. I was probably dense. I think other are right: this post was ironic. If so: it's damn funny. I wish I would have thought of it. It had me going.

And I was being negative. We should put our heads together to overcome this entropy thing. Remember the first law of thermodynamics: energy cannot be created or destroyed. So why worry. That 7 mpg truck that was recently advertised. It's not wasting energy. It's just putting it into another form. And we'll tap into that other from of energy once we overcome the entropy law.

In fact, Tom DeLay, one of our illustrious leads in the House, does not believe in evolution. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to pass a low making the second law illegal. It's unamerican.

"Colonize space."

Right. Entropy does not apply to space.

"All we have to do is put 250,000 people per day into cryogenic storage and then send them into low earth orbit for a few hundred or a couple thousand years while the scientists down here on earth come up with a solution to entropy."

Never Mind.

"Like I said: cryogenic storage + low earth orbit = entropy solved."
