$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Leanan', 'P')ower is coming back on in places, though some people are also reporting that transformers and such are blowing up as they try to re-energize the grid.

Transformers are blowing up?
Is this a lame Terminator Transformer Crossover not even Marvel worthy?

It does not take enough of a quake to knock down all the buildings, just enough to disrupt electric and gas lines to really make for a miserable time.

On the radio they said power is going on and off as crews work on locating the line break and troubleshoot the problem.

IMHO, a "suburban house" doesn't stand much of a chance in the long run.

Strider sounds a lot like my place.

Electric: Going solar as we speak. My plan is to be able to replace about 1/3 of our normal use....that would cover lights and some refrigeration. In the long run, that's all I need.

Water: Gravity fed spring....3000 gallon storage.....never gone dry in 25 years ( but does get real low this time of year )

Heat: wood......gotten somewhat soft the last few years, and we added a propane wall heater, but that could easily go. Also have a wood cookstove to add in this coming fall in a kitchen remodel. Got 100 acres of wood standing.

Septic: private system....had it pumped last year after 22 years of use....and not sure it needed it then. Suspect I could get by the rest of my life without doing it again. I put the system in originally, and put in a oversized system.

Nice to have an extra-terrestrial cause - if indeed that flare was the cause -
I heard the last big one on the east coast got started when some trees grew faster then they were expected to . . . .

A buddy of mine in LA just told me:

"Some dumbass at the department of water and power cut a major powerline. Not cause by terrorism and the power should be back up in 30 minutes (the power is up where I am now)"

Sounds like somebody screwed up big time:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'L')os Angeles Department of Water and Power officials said the outage was linked to human error at a receiving station near Burbank. Workers connected the wrong wires, causing a surge of power that led to shutdowns at three power generating stations, according to officials.
Receiving stations take high-voltage power from generating stations and convert it to lower voltage. It can then be used throughout the city.
Ron Deaton, general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, said the system is designed to shut down when it receives too much power.
"They connected it to another line that was not expecting that much electricity," said Deaton.

Humpty-dumpty lived in a cargo cult
Humpty-dumpty's cargo stream had a great decline
All the gold and all the guns
Couldn't keep Humpty's belly full, shoes on his feet, etc.

True, but weapon could come handy if/when there are roaming rape gangs, as there in New Orleans (in the Dome at least)
If a place like Los Angeles was without power for more than 72 hours, you want to take the risk that there wont' be roaming rape gangs looking to make a little girl out of you?

I have to say, this actually made me laugh quite hard in kind of a self-conscious way. In all honesty, the first thing that ran through my mind was, "fuck, I knew I should have paid extra for priority shipping on my weekend order from http://www.majorsurplusnsurvival.com"
BTW, I have no connection to them whatsoever. They do have some good deals though.

Water: drilled well(s).

Sewage: septic system.

Electricity: solar panels, with spare parts on-hand. Maybe some sort of wind power to supplement.

In my plans, at least.. :P

Close at hand don't worry.
And I'm not picking on you. Just the board in general. Being aware of this stuff makes EVERY EVENT seem like THE EVENT even though we all know it could go slow or fast, now or ten years from now. One does get a little nervous when this Monday starts with Kunstler, Simmons, the Mogambo,3.00 fuel, reports of natgas doubling this winter, only to have blackouts in LA. But only Peakers are going to notice all of that in one day.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('RonMN', 'L')OS ANGELES (Sept. 12) - A large portion of Los Angeles was blacked out Monday when electrical power was lost.
The power got knocked out shortly before 1 p.m. after two power surges.
Traffic lights throughout downtown and the San Fernando Valley were not working, causing major traffic problems, according to video from helicopter news crews.
Downtown highrises also were darkened.
The city's department of water and power said it was investigating the cause and extent of the outage. 09/12/05 16:17 EDT

Maybe I'm wrong, but don't they get their natural gas from Canada? Since electricity is produce by natural gas power planet, maybe something going on with natural gas production?
Ps: They say it was b/c of a mistake
