Personal report of fuel shortages in Athens, Georgia (link)$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ') ketzl
2005-08-31 I live in Athens, which might have even more severe fuel shortages than Atlanta. I went to fill up last night and the gas station attendant was freaking out. He said their gas supplier told him their shipment's going to be cut from 3x/week to 2x/week for now, and that if their pumps run dry they can be damaged, so what's gonna happen? Well, we'll see. I'm gonna keep my tank as close to full as I can, limit trips (fortunately I telecommute 100%) and make sure my pantry's full.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('medicvet', 'H')ey, I don't know about anyone else, but I peruse and am part of a few other messageboard websites..
others are starting to put two and two together.. gas prices roughly across the board have on average risen .40 cents a gallon in less than 24 hours, with another .30 cent a gallon increase expected. Katrina isn't the cause of all of this, or if she is, she is only the harbringer of things to come.. Dammit, I wish I had planted a garden this past year, but am damn sure doing it this spring.. and while some may be wondering about the price of gas..I am far more concerned about the price of groceries..I do have food..but am going to be getting more..and buying seeds. I heard some talking about organic seeds being far better than the 'monsanto' ...why and can you point me to places online to buy the best seeds for vegetables from? ty.

Organic or also known as "heirloom seeds" are better because the seeds from the crops you grow can be used to grow more crops, Hybrid or genetetically modified grow vegetables without fertile seeds. I've found heirloom seeds on ebay

Oh, THAT'S rich. I sure hope SOMEONE has a memory cell. Does anyone recall how we were all supposed to go out shopping? What Bush and Cheney said about conservation more than a year ago?

...snip...Drivers intent on beating rising gas prices descended upon the RaceWay station on North Main Street in High Point. The station ran out of various grades of gasoline three times on Monday.
"Everyone was filling up their cars and gas cans," said Nikki Makwana, the manager of the station.
The shortages lasted a couple of hours, and at $2.45 a gallon for regular unleaded gas Monday night, customers kept coming back to see when the pumps would be up again.

First signs of fuel shortages in SC
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')PARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Hurricane Katrina's weather threat may be over but it has left a problem at the pump.
Highest & Lowest Gas Prices in the Midlands
The South Carolina Petroleum Marketers Association says gasoline supplies are becoming a problem and that several fuel suppliers on
the pipelines in South Carolina are out of fuel as Labor Day weekend approaches.
The association is urging consumers to conserve fuel and be patient with the industry as it assesses damages and makes repairs.
The AAA is telling drivers to avoid rushing out to fill up gas tanks because that only causes prices to rise.

Here in Atlanta they ran out of 5 gallon gas tanks at the Home Depot. And the gas lines are long.
But most aren't concerned about a shortage, they are just trying to save a few bucks before gas goes up.
The gas station is out of Regular.

CNN is reporting gas panic in Atlanta. The average price is now $3.55, with some stations charging $4.99/gallon. Lines are two hours long, and some stations are rationing gas, allowing only $10 per customer. One reporter said he saw a fuel tanker being escorted by police.

I live in a little town called Royston, about 25 miles north of Athens, GA. Today at 12:30 gas prices in this area were 2.69 by 4:30 gas prices have risen to 3.39. They have placed police officers outside of the gas stations and the lines are unbelievable. I filled up my vehicle and have some gas in containers. I bought the last 5 gallon containers at our local hardware store. The gas station which I stopped at ran out of gas while I was there and did not know when more gas would be delievered. I remember the gas lines in the 70's but I do not remember it looking this grim. I am going to the store now to stock up on whatever non-perishable foods I can. Did anyone else watch the movie "Oil Storm" on USA a few months ago. That movie is coming true.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Skye', 'M')edicvet, In my opinion, www.seedsofchange.com and www.cooksgarden.com are the best (organic/heirloom) seed suppliers. I've been using seed from them for over ten years and I've had no problems. I have however purchased "organic/heirloom" seed from other suppliers in the past and had poor results. They should have explanations on their sites as to the benefits of growing from organic/heirloom seed. One of which is being able to save seed from crops (if you need/want to) instead of having to buy new seeds every year as the "monsanto" seeds do not allow this.

thank you very much for the links and info! Much appreciated. :)

Does anyone know if Chicago has any ports on Lake Michigan for receiving crude or refined products?

I guess there is no major news coverage of these incidents? At least on this side of the pond there isn't. Only some general remarks about the rising energy prizes, people that have no electricity etc., but they make it look like there are only troubles where the storm hit directly.

I went today to a full service gas station..owned by these three brothers..the gas station was a side enterprise..mostly they work on cars, but have the full service for people that want their fluids checked, but are too lazy or indisposed to do it themselves. I noticed the magic marker written in it that said 'out of order' on the pumps..asked them what it was about..if they had sold out already..they said no, but that they were told to shut it down for a while..then had to go back to work on a car..I'm like, what the fuck?

WHO told them? the govt? I did notice that for a while yesterday, every single place in the city of muskogee had the exact same price..2.69 a gallon..but then when I got back today, it varied from 2.73 to 2.89 a gallon..but it seemed to me as if they had all been told to change their prices to that at the same time, ya know?
Also, driving through two small towns, I noticed that one of them had yesterdays 2.69 a gallon price..but their was plastic over the nozzles, and even the convienience part of the store was closed..
is it possible that the govt is telling some gas stations to shut down to try and conserve some gas or am I just being paranoid?

CNN reported on the gasoline pipelines that are down due to lack of power. They said one is expected to get power back tonight. They hope to be up to 35% capacity tomorrow, 65% by the weekend.

Nope you are not paranoid. I think that is a real possibility that the stores are being told to close my friend in Atlanta was only able to put 10 bucks worth of gas in her car.

High fuel prices are bad but no fuel at any price is far worse.
