Energy Rationing

The plans are being cooked up for energy rationing: link

This is a widely-read, mainstream, one-block-off-the-beltway newspaper.
I'll bet you'll be the first kid on your block to know that a gallon of gas = 9 Carbon Units. A simple fact that everyone may be paying attention to soon.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')It has to come sooner or later. As oil becomes scarcer and scarcer and price rises higher and higher, pressures will grow for a formal allocation system. Rationing will come, if only to calm the havoc at the gas lines and the social upheavals that are bound to occur as long as rationing is only by price
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'S')o is the FCNP an "alternative" paper or a classified advertiser? or both? This is the second time you have quoted from it. It looks mainstream but sounds radical
Heh, it looks mainstream but Rupert Murdock doesn't own it so it can't be true, right?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'O')utfoxed was great. How do the other two compare? couldn't find the Falls Church paper at cjr.com.
Orwell Rolls In His Grave was very slick. I went and saw it at the American Film Institute's Sliver Theater. It deals with the effects of Reagan and Bush 1 & 2 deregulating the media (removing the laws that kept it from being a complete propoganda machine.) You can't find small, independent media stations/papers on "Who Owns What" because they aren't owned by huge corporations (unless they are fakes.)

Four gallons should give me a ~180-200 mile range, so I'm going to say yes assuming the economy is o.k... which it won't be because not everyone else has 3 bicycles and a ~$430 car that gets ~50mpg.
So, no.

Specop thinks this could, in the long run, be a fantastic scenario.
What we really need is a shortage of gasoline to "shock and awe" the people of this country off their fatasses, but we need the shortage to be limited in timeframe.
Specop thinks if suddenly everyone was waiting in gas lines for the next week or three, it might really bring awareness to the bigger issue and maybe, hopefully, people would start to realize what the hell is really going on. From that point, we can work on more permanent solutions to the bigger problem at hand. Loves a good Shock and Awe event, Specop_007

Florida will be an important test of how the GWB admistration intends to deal gasoline shortages - who is to blame, what should be done, should government implement price/allcoation controls, will the government issue gas rationing cards, etc..

Sure I could, I consume about half a gallon per day commuting round trip, assuming I brown bag it and don't go anywhere on my lunch hour.

I would bet there was a HUGE "black market" for gasoline back then. All you have to do is pick up your ration, keep what you need, sell the rest.
People will be selling gallon "cans" to Hummers at stop signs just like they sell papers and wash windows now.

Gas rationing by coupon is socialism; equal division of output based on non market mechanisms. This produces stagnation, overconsumption, lack of innovation, and much human suffering.
Rationing based on ability to pay is freedom; unequal division rewarding the most capable. This produces innovation, saving, and human advance within the constraints of nature.
You socialist shoud own up to your need to be taken care of, you feelings of inadequacy, and your negative effect on society in general.

Mark my words: It will be business as usual very soon, and afterwards everybody will shrug it off and be happy to forget the shortage as soon as possible.
And it will be seen as a confirmation of the view that "they will save us."
So in my opinion it will be very counterproductive for PO preparation, because it was just another temporary crisis like in the 70ies which went away again, and surely every crisis in the future will be like that. An oil shock, a spike blah blah blah.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')ush blames oil companies for keeping lower inventories than they have in the past and that makes shortages more likely.

What a hypocrite, considering his family owns shares in them and is raking in money from them as we speak. Looks like he's part of the problem. The oil companies are partially at fault for stifling adoption of alternatives through their political wrangling. Now they are raking in the money since we are so reliant on oil that demand destruction won't occur.
It's time to make GM bring out the electric cars they're so against, don't you think? It would take a decade to shift our car fleet over, why not start now when nearly 45% of the oil America consumes is consumed just to fuel its cars, and nothing else? http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic8972.html]link
