Theft: gas siphoning

Unread postby retiredguy » Mon 22 Aug 2005, 12:58:26

My wife works for UW-Madison. She just emailed me an email she received from campus security. It was a security alert, informing her that incidents of gas siphoning have been reported from parking lots all over Madison.

Pretty strange for Madison. Wonder what is happening in other cities?

Very interesting. I guess this sort of thing would be popular on college campuses. Parking lots are prime turf for gas thieves. Students tend to be short of money, and therefore more likely to need to steal gas. And more likely to be driving older cars with no locks on the gas tank.

I thought cars had anti siphoning measures inbuilt in them. It would be difficult to carry more than $30 worth of fuel away unless you have your car nearby. It would be a good plan to make a deal with the local petrol station owner, people fill up their tanks, later you siphoning the gas out and sell it back to the petrol station and then the people come back to fill up again. :P

The siphoning incidents haven't been on campus. Rather, they have been occuring at other downtown lots. I doubt that the culprits are students. It takes a 4-point to get into the UW today; can't think of too many students who would risk expulsion for a few gallons of gas. Besides, students can't park on campus.

Harbor Freight Tools (cheap ass Chinese slave made tool retailer) had a siphon on sale in their latest ad. I asked the clerk where they where (thought I might get one to use for my motorcycles-- removing fuel for winter storage etc., no illegal intentions, I promise!) But he said they were sold out STATEWIDE (CA). hmmmmmmm

My term for Harbor Freight is the "Chinese Outlet Store." Saw the siphons, too. Guess some folks around here have been buying them :-D

I'm not personally concerned, though. Kinda doubt that anyone would attempt to siphon gas from my Prius.

It won't work in a gas engine.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

Try not to park next to large vehicles.
Try to park with your gas cap side exposed to foot traffic like sidewalks or facing buildings
Park on the end of the row with your gas cap facing the open side, as long as the open side isn't a corn field or other "cover".
Even if your gas cap door has an inside operated latch, buy a locking gas cap. The doors are very easy to pry open.

Maybe somebody told them they could get high from the stuff.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Hawkcreek', 'W')e used to use a sharp wood chisel to poke a hole in the gas tank and drain it into gallon milkjugs. It can be done from underneath and is very easy.
Probably not a nice thing to do, but I am sure we will see it coming back.
Actually it would be better to do with diesel, less chance of fire. I have a couple of diesel vehicles, and may need to visit Spec-op some day for fuel. :-D

You can siphon with any old hose, fishing spear rubber or piece of garden hose or what have you, and while the car owner might be miffed, you puncture his tank and he's for sure going to want your scalp on his wall. I never heard of anyone poking holes in tanks in the 70s

Just don't try to start the siphon with mouth suction. A mouthful of gasoline is very nasty, and if you swallow it it can turn very deasly.

Haha my brother's friend just spat out the gas that ended up in his mouth..... don't look at me, I don't have a car and have no particular desire for gas right now.

A refinement on the drill and fill technique:

The SupaLeech Freerider System ®© :

[1]
A 10mm hole is quiclkly made in the target vehicles tank using a slow ceramic bit (no sparks).

[2]
A mat black flexy pipe with a barbed black silicon gromet is plugged into the hole.

[3]
The pipe feeds to a rigid tube that is poked out under the rear fender with a self sealing slit valve attached. If care is taken to make the job look like a standard factory part, it may well go un-noticed for many years.

[4]
The parasite vehicle is then fitted with a docking head at the correct height. Like a mini version of an in-flight refueling boom. The head is connected to a pump that goes straight into parasite vehicles fuel tank.

In order to take fuel, the parasitic vehicle need only park next to the target vehicle and throw a switch.

Leeching must be practiced with restraint, no more than a litre/day of any one target vehicle, so as not to the owner.

Obviously if the system became popular, leechers would need to check their own tanks for other peoples grommets and pipes so they did not become the leeched.

I'm sure there's mileage in this idea :) you never know, it may become popular as gas prices sky rocket.

The Hopis mark the end of the 4th world as a purge by fire. Special markers include building of 'spider webs in the sky' through which 'people will walk'.
