Conflicted but in a good way, my resistance to a used boat is slipping as I've been dabbling amongst the Island Packet's available. IP 380's in particular, having "blue water" credentials but also shallow enough draft to get into what I call home. Very tempting alternative. Boat browsing is kinda fun.

With me it's motorcycles. Finally figured out I don't need a rectifier/regulator today, and am just down to pulling off all the tuperware to get at the battery to replace it. Gotta winterize 2 others as well, the daughter wants hers back when maintennce is done.
I'll try out the new bike and keep it for at least a year to see if it sticks.

Have a boat with blue water capability is smart if you're an American, that and a couple of destinations far south to retreat to of course. Many are thinking along these lines, it makes more sense than staying put when the real anarchy starts.
We're 17 years past the peak now and the 3rd World is going hungry and dark. We'll be next, we're well on the way in fact.

Boats need a surprising amount of support from land based services. Diesel, food, water or water-maker cartridges, maintenance items like engine oil and little fiddly plastic parts, and sail repairs, bottom paint and scrubbings. You probably can make a one way trip somewhere without being too stressed, so its an ok, get out of Dodge, method; but you best be headed somewhere where the folks there are looking forward to your visit, and hope your dollars are still worth something, or else all you've done is go from a place that can grow wheat, to a place that can't.

You are a guest when you arrive and need to abide by those standards. We keep out boat in the caribbean. There is a huge difference in accessibility to stuff when on an island. Every year I end up exporting/importing various hits of stuff not locally available.
But we enjoy the different cultures and the freedom. We find the hustle bustle of the USA oppressing. Here now for a bit to get Drs. exams and take care of some business and family ties. Then off by the end of December I hope.

Good for you. I recall some of your posts, way back when. Are you insulated enough from the modern world to not worry as much about peak oil as the old days? Not that it turned out to matter, but still, some of us made lifestyle choices and regardless of why, it is good to see they worked out.

Nice to hear from you. Hope you are doing well. We have had some medical issues but seemed to have gotten through them with minimal scars. Head back to the Caribbean Saturday.
