Oh this was funny. NASA Finds Underground 'City' Hidden 100 Feet Below Icy Surface

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'R')esearchers were shocked when their advanced radar technology picked up signs of human construction deep beneath the ice of the island territory’s tundra, according to the space agency. Camp Century, an abandoned Cold War-era military installation, was rediscovered 100 feet beneath the ice by a NASA Gulfstream III back in April
https://nypost.com/2024/11/27/world-new ... greenland/

The funny thing is, it was never lost! I watched a video about it a few years ago, no more interesting than anything else the the US military did in the cold war and a lot shorter lived. So what is this hyperbole from NASA all about? It's about a broken down Government agency desperate for recognition as the rest of the World surpasses it in achievement. Look at us look at us, look what WE found!

When a nation makes a great achievement as Russia and America did with space flight people assume the glory will last forever, but it doesn't. I put Russia first of course because they actually led the way, they were first in space, first to put a man in space. Many here probably forgot that

What does it have to do with EV's? Everything. The EV "revolution" is no different, a massive spending of capital to achieve the beginnings (Beginnings) of something wholly unsustainable. Back when Apollo Astronauts were playing golf on the Moon people were chaffing at the bit for their turn. After all Mars colonies were promised, big orbiting stations, joy rides to the Moon. People really believed it would happen, well most people did... Anyone with a basic understanding of the cost and risks of space travel knew it was all Hoopla but no one listened to them, they were doomsayers, glass half empty types. No, to see reality we had to wait for the quiet death of the promised transition, wait long enough so that people pretended the promises were never made. Don't they still go into Space? Of course, for better nuclear target fixing and for faster transfer of internet pornography and gaming, better profits for a few in other words but not for the advancement of mankind, to build research bases etc. The ISS is an embarrassment compared to what was projected 65 years ago. It's space garbage waiting to fall out of Orbit.

As far as the EV in concerned there is now an embarrassed silence across the mainstream media, and at the office water-cooler too no doubt. The endless chatter about next years models, extended ranges, and the Holy grail, autonomous driving, has all but dried up. This series of threads is a good indicator of that process. All the 'positive' chatter about the future has boiled down to a few spurious statements about "Sales" still improving, but even if that's true, and I deny it is, but even so what are those sales? They are of Cheap-Arse Chinese timebombs being dumped across the Western nations. The PRC offloading their factory output as fast as they can, even as their showrooms burn to the ground with battery fires. Try putting that forward as a measure of success 5 years ago and you'd be laughed off the forums, Banned probably!

Every decade or two there is renewed chatter about The Martian Colony from the likes of NASA or a tech Guru. A cult of tech built up around Steve Jobs just as it has built up around Elon Muck, a blind belief that all the prophet says will surly come to pass. These people will always keep the conversation alive, in dusty little internet chat rooms. People find their gods anywhere they can, I've no doubt that many small wannabe entrepreneurs looked up in wonder at John Santora as he revolutionized inner city office access. Now at last they too can have an "office" on Wall street, just as they deserve. He was a Legend in their eyes, and if they took their meager profits and reinvested it into WeWork, they'd surely be set for life. I wonder how many did?

Image

But even at it's best Wework was a terrible environment https://www.reddit.com/r/WeWork/comment ... of_people/

The wonder of it all is this predatory business model only exists in America as far as I can see. Down here we have much stronger regulation to protect the people of Australia form the machinations of grifters and hucksters like Musk and Santora. So what's the next scam to fool the masses? Is it a Mars mission venture? It's already well established of course, the AI mania. It's being integrated in every smart phone and all leading search engines, government servers too no doubt. A.I. the SciFi dream come true, at least for the men selling the crap and making all the profit. Profit from gullible consumers spending an extra $200 for it on their phones

Well kub, well adam, it's not the last nail in the coffin but we're getting close.

End Of Road: EV Startup Canoo
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')The struggling Oklahoma-based electric van startup Canoo appears to have reached the end of the road.
According to an internal email obtained by TechCrunch, the startup has placed employees on a "mandatory unpaid break" through the end of the year. The email said that just a few days before Christmas, the company locked employees out of Canoo's systems.

As of mid-November, the startup had $700k in cash or cash equivalents as it rounded out a very turbulent year amid an ongoing EV downturn. "It recently closed the Los Angeles office that used to serve as its headquarters. It has lost a lot of executives, including its chief technology officer, chief financial officer, and general counsel," TechCrunch noted.

Auto blog Jalopnik provided more color on Canoo's struggles, including how "the company spent twice as much on a private jet for its CEO than it had earned for the entire year of 2023. It burned through capital and now seems unable to wrap up the year."
https://techcrunch.com/2024/12/20/ev-st ... aid-break/ https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/end-r ... paid-break

Now please take note of that last paragraph (if you had the attention span to read that far) That is basically what happens with all these startups, lots of earnest promises of transforming the world used as cover for greedy CEO's to load up their personal x-mass trees.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '&')quot;Canoo was supposed to bring automotive manufacturing back to the state of Oklahoma, and the company received taxpayer-funded, performance-based incentives totaling $100 million spaced out over 10 years to do exactly that," Jalopnik said, adding, "But the way things are going right now, it's questionable whether Canoo will last long enough to bring those promised steady jobs to the Sooner State."

A former employee provided Oklahoma news outlet KFOR with deeper insight into the startup, alleging that it has produced nothing... "They have tons of equipment," the former employee said. "It looks great. They have literally everything to run an entire assembly line for cars." Last December, Canoo proudly announced it had built its first three vehicles in the Oklahoma City plant, before selling them to the state. The former employee told News 4 that "made in Oklahoma" announcement gave him a good laugh.

"I can tell you, those did not come off our assembly line," the former employee said. "If you talk to any Canoo employee, they'll tell you those do not come off the assembly line." He says Canoo never paid the company that provided the software that the machines use to operate. The former employee also says the company only ran the machines when showing them off to media or investors. "The majority of those folks that were employed there, especially those hourly people, were just standing around twiddling their thumbs," the former employee said.

The company has boasted about partnerships with Walmart, DoD, and the USPS over the years...

I could imagine kub bragging about that last point a couple of years back, bragging as though future corporate promises were actually set in concrete

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')hy is Oklahoma known as the Sooner State?
Usually land was claimed by settlers on a first come, first served basis. Those who broke the rules by crossing the border into the territory before the official opening time were said to have been crossing the border sooner, leading to the term sooners, which eventually became the state's official nickname.
A state founded by opportunists willing to break the rules for their own personal profit. I like it  It really sums up the American mindset, no rules, take what you want at the expense of those around you. Bribe the officials, murder those that get in your way.

Of course many nations began this way, Australia did it to a large degree during it's founding years. But we never codified it into law so to speak. We never made it the national ethos. It's why things like our electricity market (prices) are reasonable, there is a lot of government oversight that prevents egregious exploitation by private companies.

Pulling the Plug on EV Mandates

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he Wall Street Journal reports Trump Can Pull the Plug on EV Mandates
Overly stringent emissions targets ignore American consumers’ preferences and block economic growth. They’re also restrictive, costly and unachievable for U.S. manufacturers based on current market trends.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s electric-vehicle mandate also must go. The mandate would effectively require automakers to shift at least 54% of production to EVs and 16% hybrids to meet the 2032 requirements, an unrealistic target.
https://mishtalk.com/economics/trump-wi ... n-day-one/

 Like they matter now. This is no doubt one promise he'll keep, a final Fuck Yoo to the whole pointless industry.

You are living in your own little world and making up your own facts. EV sales are up 50% year over year but you just continue your drivel: "EV sales have peaked. Sales are now going down." Riiiigghhht. Sales up 50% means sales are going down.

theluckycountry wrote:
You'll be like all the others online who get sucked into these bubbles, in six months or a year you'll go quiet and disappear off the forum when the trend is obvious.

HaHa! EV sales still going higher? Bad prediction kub, and where are you these days? Disappeared off the forum, just like I said. Did you work for tesla kub? or Canoo :o

Ahhh these EVidiots, they have no idea how the economy works, they'll be eating out of my trash can in the years to come. Perhaps I'll throw them a bone, let them shine my shoes.

Unlikely. You see, those folks probably know more about the economy and economics than the likes of you, and if they invested the savings from the lower running costs of their EVs into BC, they could be doing quite a bit better than retired toilet repair men, and getting started on becoming far more like Careinke than you.

Yes you were wrong adam, 100% wrong. You believed a great transition was coming and you wanted to get on the bandwagon, but little did you know, your government and your TV set was lying to you. Now you're the object of derision, that old man with his leaf's, the sucker who thought he's save a few dollars at the expense of being able to travel outside the city limits. You know you'll have to dump those on the side of the road one day don't you? No one is going to pay you to take them away, they'll want to charge you!

And trump will end all that and the manufacturers will breath a sigh of relief. Most wanted no part of the EV debacle but regulations and exorbitant penalties forced them to make the garbage. Soon they will be free :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('theluckycountry', 'Y')es you were wrong adam, 100% wrong.

Often. But I don't know which one you are referring to.

But the key question is...about what? As a technical expert, I like to say that I specialize in being wrong, as I tackle new ideas, maths and concepts, trying to come up with a unified whole that accounts for and explains an event, predicts a future, establishes a new and higher baseline of understanding in a particular field or area of study.

And as it is you writing, there are several things we know for certain.

A) The odds are high you aren't actually going to claim I am wrong about something I WAS wrong about, but rather some nonsense you assigned to me as a strawman you prefer to fight.

B) You can't even QUANTIFY a wrong, its degree and probability, because that would require more education on topics you know nothing about, plus the ability to think critically and logically, and prove your statement in maths, history or some other means using critical and thorough thinking.

C) You lack the objectivity to even judge "wrong" on topics, instead inserting your belief systems into nearly everything you write. Adolf did some good things, womenz should stay home and raise kids, and DA MAN should take care of his family, BIG men ride BIG motorcycles because its what MENZ does.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('theluckycountry', '
')You believed a great transition was coming and you wanted to get on the bandwagon, but little did you know, your government and your TV set was lying to you.

See A). And B).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('theluckeycountry', '

See A).

Tesla Has the Highest Fatal Accident Rate of All Auto Brands
Tesla vehicles suffer fatal accidents at a rate that's twice the industry average, according to a new report. https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a6291 ... nds-study/

Well of course, they were thrown together in some startup factory, the product of a huckster, sold to a gullible public that grew up on episodes of star trek and the Jetsons.

Image

Toyota's Hydrogen Car Dream Is Falling Apart
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')oyota sold fewer than 150 fuel-cell electric vehicles worldwide last month.
But as we learned earlier this year, owning a hydrogen-powered car–in the United States, at least–is a major headache. Hydrogen prices have skyrocketed and filling stations have been closed, forcing owners to go out of their way to keep their zero-emissions vehicles running
https://www.msn.com/en-my/news/other/to ... r-AA1wAmlP

Another dumbass dream down the gurgler. Was Toyota stupid? No, they were just advertising, "Look at Toyota, were the Future." The money wasted was probably well overshadowed by sales of conventional vehicles and hikes in their share price. Once you realize the impracticality of these dreams it's easy to reverse engineer the marketing to find the real motives.

Electric vehicles had another whirlwind year in 2024 around the globe I AP Explains

Really?

Driven by buyers in China, as well as Europe and the US, despite headwinds. In a milestone for China, EV sales hit 50% of new car sales this 'july'. Now that includes pure electric vehicles, as well as plugin hybrid electric vehicles (Which kub naturally considers an EV, even though they burn Gasoline)

A tragic accident occurred late Thursday evening when the driver of an electric vehicle (EV) lost control and crashed under the 73 Freeway underpass in Irvine. Following the collision, the vehicle burst into flames, resulting in the death of at least one individual inside the car.
Irvine Police Department responded swiftly to the scene and worked alongside firefighters to contain the intense blaze. Despite their efforts, the occupant could not be saved. Authorities have not yet released details about the number of people involved or the identity of the deceased.

Yeah, we looked at that before with actual statistics from national fire fighters reports.
Although EV fires are no more common, EV tend to ignite at ANY time. Whereas gas cars tend to catch fire while driven or shortly after when still hot. That makes ev unpredictable and significantly more dangerous. Adding the hotter than hell and inextinguishable fire they produce don't help either.

Yeah I'd take my chances in a Gas fire any day over being in an instantaneous blast furnace the EV becomes. How many ICE cars catch on fire just tooling down the highway? Never! But EVs do that, and you have about 5 seconds to pull up and jump out the window before the flames and toxic gasses consume you.

The Good news: Global electric vehicle (EV) sales grew by 25% in 2024 to 17.1 million units

China responsible for two-thirds of global EV registrations
14 January 2025

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')n China, the new figures from Rho Motion show that EV sales grew by 40% year-on-year to 11 million units.
China also achieved another monthly record for electrified vehicle sales in December 2024 with more than 1.3 million units sold, accounting for the lion’s share of the more than 1.9 million EVs registered globally in the month

Huge part of China’s growth through PHEVs

The Chinese market grew by 2% month-on-month in December and by 40% overall, last year. A huge part of that year-on-year growth came from plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), with 81% growth, compared to BEV growth of 19%. The rise in demand for range-extender electric vehicles (REEVs) has played a significant role in the growth of PHEVs in China, a technology that has yet to come to Western markets in mass. The Chinese market benefited from its car trade-in scheme, which it doubled in July 2024, and has been extended for 2025.
https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/china- ... istrations

REEV's? WOW 8O Some amazing new technological advancement where you actually burn Gasoline to drive around, who would have thought!
I wonder what that trade-in scheme is? It'll be a good deal no doubt. The north American market grew as well, by 9%. Mostly attributed to subsidies (and the fear of losing them under Trump) as well as the flood of cheap Chinese entrants. The UK saw an uptick in sales as well, due to the ZEV mandate that has highly incentivized manufacturers to push their low emission cars. Probably includes hybrids.

Most automakers close 2024 on a high note
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')ord, GM report record-setting marks for electric vehicles sold, while Stellantis falters.
GM sold 2.7 million vehicles in 2024, a 4% YoY improvement and its highest total since 2019, the company said. In Q4, the automaker also posted a 21% YoY improvement. GM also sold 42,000 EVs in Q4, up 10,000 from the prior quarter and nearly double the amount sold in Q2.
https://www.automotivedive.com/news/for ... es/737122/

So the headline sprukes about EV sales but out of the 2,700,000 cars GM sold only about 400,000 odd were EV. It's like the Gasoline powered cars the majority prefers don't exist! People shouldn't be surprised by this, the US reporting mechanism is totally biased now. Black people are victims and don't commit crimes, every child needs to encouraged at school to become Gay or perhaps Transgender. A war of Western conquest in central Europe is portrayed as a struggle for freedom and the word Gasoline has been censored out of all relevant publications

Talk about Authoritarian government overreach. They want to control every aspect of peoples lives.

I was browsing user posts and dug up the origonal EV Pt one thread from back in 2004. A lot of smart people were posting on the forum then, damn shame they moved on.

the-electric-vehicle-ev-thread-pt-1-merged-archived-t8884.html
Note: These comments were made "before" Lipo batteries came on the scene and are still valid today.

Postby Devil » Wed 25 Aug 2004, 19:57:27
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'E')lectric vehicles generalised? No way, unless you want hundreds more nuclear power stations to keep the batteries charged. As a rough guideline, you will need 4 1.6 GWe nuclear reactors for every million mid-sized cars or twice that number for electric SUVs. And don't talk about wind or solar. Nobody wants their cars to not start in the morning because weather conditions are not favourable.
There is NO way that the electricity grid in any country I know of could cope with the extra load: as a rough guide, it would require tripling the capacity.

Postby lowem » Thu 26 Aug 2004, 02:09:21$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')The batteries, dudes, the batteries! 2 orders of magnitude too lousy!

Postby Devil » Thu 26 Aug 2004, 02:33:37
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'L')ousy = too big and too heavy with too short a lifetime for too high a cost. That is why the hybrid wins hands down; the battery is small.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he average to wheels efficiency of an ordinary mid-sized car today is about 35%, rising to 55% for a hybrid.
Also, electric cars, size-for-size, are much heavier. You can't compare a Hummer with a Corolla, and they will still drive Hummer-equivalents, if they are available. Electric to wheels is typically 80%-85% efficient, provided you have regenerative braking and know how to drive them, but electric to electric in the battery (when it is new) is, at the best, 70% efficient, so the overall efficiency is 56-60%, hardly better than a Prius. Of course, having to accelerate the extra weight of the batteries will require more energy, so the actual energy consumption will rise on a size-for-size comparison.

Postby mgibbons19 » Sat 28 Aug 2004, 04:00:46
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')hy on earth would we try to deal with this by switching cars around? The car and the modern 'burb are the perfect evolution of oil driven transportation. Trying to retrofit electric onto that infra/structure will be expensive and inefficient.

Why not Segways and bikes and golf carts and small gas/electric vehicles? They would make great interim transportation while the cities relocalized and perhaps became more dense.
Why on earth indeed mgibbons, why on Earth? Because on Earth, profits for corporations always trump rational practical solutions for our societies. If the move had have been made in the 70's, or even when you wrote this post in the 00's, to retool all auto factories to the making of light Aluminium frame vehicles, to move all truck transport onto a small set of dedicated roads, all industry well outside the cities, de-pave all other roads in favor of grass and light bikeway surfaces, build out light rail, and I mean "Light" all across the cityscapes, etc etc etc, we'd be there by now, enjoying clean air and low noise environments.

In 1941 the Government took similar steps to massively rearm and life went on across the nation. It would have been entirely possible. Even people in remote areas could have enjoyed the transition, the technology is there for 4-wheel electric or tiny combustion engine vehicles that are able to negotiate rural roads. Sure have your diesel trucks out there too, speed limited to 30Mph so they aren't killing all the light traffic. You do the main rail networks right and you could massively expand them at a cost saving over the huge hwy systems now in place.

Rail is easily maintained with hand labor, even when it's the heavy gauge they use now. That's how it was originally built! Jobs in every town, maintaining the lines, resettling the sleepers. Solar powered mowers running up and down the light rural vehicle ways. If they have grass cover, they don't erode. Or simply copy the Roman's, their roads are still around after 2000 years! If we cant duplicate them, and smoother with our technology, then I'll give up my motorcycles and walk.

Re: THE Electric Vehicle (EV) Thread pt 16

Oops

EV School Busses Paralyzed With "Error Codes" In Maine Winter

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'L')ion Electric was awarded $38 million by the EPA's Clean School Bus Program to produce 97 electric school buses and charging infrastructure. It's not immediately known how many of these buses are operating nationwide.

The Quebec-based company attempted to carve out its place in North America's school bus industry by swapping reliable diesel-powered buses for unreliable EVs. However, the company defaulted on its debt and, as of late 2024, was seeking bankruptcy protection under Canadian law.
https://www.zerohedge.com/technology/ev ... ine-winter

Just one more example of the stupidity of transitioning to EVs. And what happens to these 1.5 year old buses when they are finally scrapped? A big recycling bill naturally, and a ton of toxic waste dumped into land fill.

Remember the chatter years ago about the Whizz Bang recycling facilities springing up like mushrooms to deal with all this future waste? Well the ones that haven't burned to the ground are running near margin and still dumping mountains of heavy metals into landfills (Tesla included). The same applies to the renewable energy sector, tens of thousands of "retired" fiberglass windmill blades being dumped into holes in the ground and covered over with soil. It's a global eco-disaster.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he recycling process for solar panels is tedious and challenging. The difficulty lies not so much in recycling the individual components, but in separating those components such as glass, aluminum, and the more valuable materials such as tellurium and iridium

Only about 10% of panels in the US are recycled—it isn’t mandated by federal regulations, and recycling the devices is currently much more expensive than just discarding them.

Time for some more obfuscation

Enter the zev
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'Z')ero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) get you from home to work and everywhere in between while reducing fuel costs by up to 75% and dramatically reducing tailpipe emissions. A ZEV is a vehicle that either produces no tailpipe emissions or has the potential to produce no emissions, for example, an electric vehicle.

Tesla’s sales drop double digits in the US’ biggest EV market, while others are growing
https://electrek.co/2025/02/03/teslas-s ... e-growing/
What's growing? ZEVs, and Hybrids. But hang on? Hybrids are ZEVs, so what's going on here. Double accounting.
Soon it will be impossible to fathom the collapse of the Electric car industry since the water is being muddied by all these gasoline powered hybrids, which are dominating sales. Tesla though is a good yardstick, they are collapsing all over the World now, and the reason cited? Elon Musk's involvement in Politics.

China?
China's EV exports seen stalling in 2025
Exports of electric cars and plug-in hybrids, known collectively as new energy vehicles (NEVs), grew 24.3% to 1.29 million last year.
A year-long subsidy probe against Chinese-made EVs weighed on exports to the bloc, with 10% growth in the first months falling well short of an 36% increase in 2023, according to the association.
Russia, Mexico and United Arab Emirates were the top three markets for China-made cars in the first 11 months of 2024, CPCA said, while exports to Thailand, Australia, and Britain fell.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('theluckycountry', 'W')hat's going on Kub?

Kublikhan hasn't posted for like 2+ months....is this all you got? Set up an absent poster with one of your usual infantile and always repetitive strawman and then declare victory? Every time Kub comes back around the information provided rolls up whatever your puerile misrepresentation of the day is and you come across the same as you have claimed to be. Some perspective pimping uneducated neoNazi without a spare neuron to do anything other than repeat yourself.

Been on any tight tracks recently? Blowhard.

Well, the program never spent the money on chargers, go figure, and good riddance.

Yeah, I know, I just wanted to rub it in the faces of those EVidiots that were bragging back in the day about the Great Expansion of EV. It's telling though isn't it, those funds were allocated years ago and hardly a cent was spent. Even the government knew it was over, but not Kub and Adam, they are still stuck in the propaganda loop, though I imagine they are waking up a bit now.
The stages of grief apply to a lot more than the death of a relative.

denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

They were in denial for ever, then they were both angry, and adam still is, an angry little mutt. Kub has clearly gone off to wallow in his depression and in about 5 years both will have accepted the fact the EV was a smokescreen, but by then they'll pretend they knew that all along. That's the trouble with dumb people, they never admit they were wrong, they never learn anything, just go off and repeat the same pattern, over and over and over.
