The Status and Future of Geothermal Electric Power by Charles F. Kutscher, NREL from the Proceedings of the American Solar Energy Society Annual Conference proceedings, June, 2000.

http://www.ecotopia.com/apollo2/geothermalstatus.pdf

This is quite an interesting report for USA viewers. It shows the areas (Fig 1) in the western US where geothermal energy can be used to generate electricity. He also says that currently (in 2000) identified resources could provide 20,000 MW of power and undiscovered resources might provide 5 times that amount.

As long as we're dreaming/scheming

Why not use a TBM ( tunnel boring machine )
like the ones used to build the Chunnel ..
which were abandoned in place by the way ..
(ie) too expensive to remove/dismantle them

Just fire those suckers up again .. don't have to go
very deep .. fill the hole with water .. it will
absorb energy from the surrounding warm earth and you
now have a 'heat sink' for a closed-loop ground souce
geothermal system for space heating cooling ..

Those are only usable for horizontal boring through hard rock.

They basically work by rolling a number of wheels (think railcar-wheels) over the rock, and by sheer force of pressure, it cracks between the rims, falls of, and is collected in the rotating slides.
