though more and more people get their info from the web. Using the web it could be easy to accomplish a good lobby to get corparations out of politics. It should be an effort by moderate republicans and democrats for the best chance of succeeding I guess.

Anyway, I'm not gonna do it, I'm not American.

How can you back your statement up? As if this is something that the last 5 years did, this has been forming for many more years then that. Do not let the left wing propaganda mess with your thinking. If you think Bush and Co where the first ones to erode your rights, you best do a lot and I do mean a lot of research.
Now that being said, I think the media controls us by "left/right blue/red" because as long as the typical American blames Bush or Clinton or whatever for the problems, they do not focus on the real problem, the corporatation ownership of government, no matter who leads the country.

But as you can see, many of us Americans see the problem, we will eventually solve it, or PO will for us.
I am pissed off more then most because of my philosphy or outlook being so pragmatic. I cannot stand seeing Americans fighting over Bush's policies, Clinton policies, Bush Sr policies ect
When in reality we have no had someone looking out for us since well political greed came with a heavy dose of corporate payoffs.

Clinton is responsible for more Iraqi deaths than GWB.

However, GWB is catching up fast.

Now the old man considers Bill Clinton as a son. And I just recently learned that the old man and Clinton had many meetings during the Clinton administration.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('threadbear', 'L')eanan-- I hope your vision of decentralized economy comes to pass. But here's an alternative, albeit a bleak one.

Right now, there are (theoretically speaking) 4 or 5 industry leaders in any one industry, where there used to be 100, (due to mergers and acquisitions in the last 20 years.) When the shtf, maybe true monopolies, not just oligopolies emerge and instead of the current 4 or 5 industry leaders, there's just one. All small businesses have been assimilated or driven under, as well, * Borg like. *See Star Trek.

What's to prevent this from happening? And could these monopolies not survive even taking peak oil into account?

Actually, I think both will come to pass. And it might actually be better that way.

As I've posted in the main forum, I think it's likely that peak oil will mean a more authoritarian central government for awhile. And that may not be an entirely bad thing. Our problems are too large to solve individually or locally. What people are doing in one place - burning trillions of tons of coal with no scrubbers, say, or using nuclear weapons - can affect the whole country, even the whole world. If Canada decides to use the U.S. as its dumping ground for slag from its tar sands operations, your local neighborhood association isn't going to be able to do squat about it.

Until the powerdown is complete, we will probably need centralization.

I don't believe that any government would dissolve itself when it was no longer needed. However, I do think peak oil will mean we'll have to devolve into smaller political entities. It simply won't make sense for some guy in Washington, DC to call the shots in, say, Hawaii. Eventually, regions would pull away. Britain couldn't maintain their empire, and neither will we.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('highlander', 'T')his whole "Red state-Blue state" schism is really devisive. Look at the demographics. It has very little to do with states. It's cities. The bastion of those needing to be cared for by the gov't. Where will the blue leaning folk go when the gov't can no longer afford to take care of them? Maybe we can implement Phase one of Monte's powerdown scenerio on the cities
OK, I'm just kidding.......I hope

I agree on the first part-it is about demographics. But you overall analysis is wrong. The rural regions produce the grains-corn, wheat, meat, and vegetables on large farms that employ relatively few workers. Most of rural America is dispersed and MORE DEPENDENT on automobiles and trucks then folks in the cities or dense suburbs. A lot of rural people think nothing of driving 10 miles for a bag of corn chips. They are the ones who will suffer because of lack of infrastructure. The city folks will get their rations and handouts.

Having experienced both cultures, your completely wrong. Its exactly the other way around.
Country folk dont drive 10 miles for a bag of cornchips. City folk will drive 30 to get their nails done.

I know many people out here who drive 10 or more miles to town several times a day. This is one of my favorite rants. Automobile culture and cheap fuel have rendered many Amerikans incapable of PLANNING AHEAD.
In the 1970's I talked to old homesteaders who went to town (Missoula) to shop once a YEAR. They could walk down to the railroad, flag a train to Missoula, have the mercantile deliver the goods to the depot where the train would haul it back. They would actually STOP the train so you could unload your goods anywhere YOU wanted.
Another example of debunking the "illusion of progress".

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('I_Like_Plants', 'I')t died when Hamilton and his cronies won out over Jefferson. The final nail was in the coffin when Lincoln was elected.

All we're experiencing now is rigor mortis.

Me think you very right here. Incredibly sad, but very true. 1865 was probably the time of death. In 1913 the worms had made their way trough the carcass. Incredibly sad, but maybe a lesson to be learned for the future.

Me think the key is very, very simple: Nobody, absolutely NOBODY have any rights over another human beeing. This has to be set in stone. Any slight tendency to take power over other humans has to be quashed in its infancy. A tiny 0.1% tax is a one way ticket to hell, because if the general principle is established, it will only increase.

However, as long as people go along, there will be no change.

How in the world will we be able to keep industrial civilization going, if no one has any rights over other human beings? The Chinese peasants will be able to shut down polluting phamaceutical factories left and right, if there's no police force to crack a few skulls and keep the front gates open. Half the Piggly-Wiggly employees will probably quit, if there's no threat of the sheriff coming 'round and forcibly evicting them from their homes. With no threat of raids by narcotics squads, pot growers will grow their evil weed with impunity, spreading 'amotivational syndrome' across the face of the nation. Then how are we going to compete with Brunei?!

Are you mad? We have a nation to run, and we'll be damned if we can't drive the proles to consume like the good capitalist tools they're meant to be!

...which is why we need to find alternatives to oil very soon, before the proles figure out they can start slacking.

As has been pointed out already, I don't think people in this country(USA) aren't too stupid to see what's going on, it's just that corporate media tries to focus attention away when possible(just look at the Downing Street Memo, and how they've suddenly stopped covering the Plame case, and the sudden resurgence of Natalie Halloway), divide and conquer(as Jesse Ventura has pointed out, by dividing every issue into two extreme sides, you can make it into more of a simplistic battle in order to sell more ads such as blue/red, dem/rep/other), and just twist and mislead. Our media in the past few decades has done a horrible job informing us. However, if you're into entertainment, the news is getting more and more into that.

I more and more rely on non-traditional sources of entertainment and information, as it is ridiculous our current state of affairs. However, when choosing news outlets, it's important imo to choose material from opposing viewpoints, or one risks wearing blinders.
In the long run, men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high.-Thoreau

Caution this turned into a rant

Straight ticket voters and those who think one party is more evil than the other are fooling themselves, and I have seen so much of this in the forums that it spins my head. The fact of the matter seems to be that both parties are so close to each other that both glass houses are full of shards. The system is set up in a way that turnover is next to impossible. Once an asshole gets into office he/she immediately sets out to move district lines in a way that will assure a comfy job for the rest of their days. I have little doubt that they spend more sleepless nights staring at the purple map dreaming up some Rorschach test looking district than they spend thinking about real issues like PO. Even if an honest person gets elected they find themselves in a shitstorm of seniority speeches that go something like this.
"If you really want to be on the Energy Committee then you will have to dance to my tune and vote the way I tell you, freshman"
Thus the freshman senator ends up doing as told and not making waves.
In the end the corrupt broken system continues and as the freshman senator ages he becomes accustomed to being a greedhead sack of shit and completely forgets why he ran in the first place.

"Oh yeah it's that psycho nut dmtu"

Look at the idiots you have backed in the previous election. GWB an obviously easy man to lead about, hell you can almost see the nose ring they use. John Frankenstein Kerry, the dolt who could only talk about his Purple Heart, the medal that probably wasn't legit. Out of a population of 300 million don't you think we could go out when the short bus goes by and pick a couple of better candidates? Please! Now the assholes are about to go into their recess.... You know what I do with my vacation? I use it for sick days because the company I work for doesn't provide sick days. Your servants, yeah you pay them, are going out to recess. You're their boss why do you let those assholes have so much time off when there is so much work to do?

We the people own the airwaves of this country, Not CBS or FOX or CNN. There is absolutely no reason why the candidates have to raise (be bought and paid for) so much money. As a matter of fact I think that elected officials are underpaid. I wouldn't mind one bit if we paid the President 2 million a year if he was capable of being a leader without lying and stumbling over "nucular" or his untied shoe lace.

If you're still with me and you vote straight ticket over the same old shit that the parties claim are issues, isn't it about time you re-evaluated your position. Isn't this whole republic thing about a country, or is it about a hideous pack of thieves known as a party? Are you aware that in most states, if not all, that if you register as anything other than D or R you are listed as an independent? Are these two parties really so great that everyone else is an independent. Why were the Greens and the Libertarians kept out of the presidential debates again? I bet they could follow the rules better than Bush. Oh well, it doesn’t matter until we can get rid of campaign contributions and that won’t happen until there is nothing to contribute.

Yep the U.S. is dead, so is this rant, but it sure is good to see that I'm not the only one who is fed up with the two party BS.

Nice rant. You're right on the money. So was the cartoon that MacG posted.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('dmtu', 'T')hus the freshman senator ends up doing as told and not making waves. In the end the corrupt broken system continues and as the freshman senator ages he becomes accustomed to being a greedhead sack of shit and completely forgets why he ran in the first place.

Yep. People haven't grown up yet and realized that all are capable of being corrupted. That was a major theme of George Lucas' epic Star Wars series. It was the nice, mother-loving, bright and capable young kid, Anakin Skywalker, who eventually grew up to be the half-man, half-machine tyrant Lord Vader. We saw how his best intentions were used to pave the way towards his own personal hell. (And never doubt that he was in hell, until the end, when he turned his back on the emperor, and in so doing, restored balance to the galaxy.)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('dmtu', 'O')h well, it doesn’t matter until we can get rid of campaign contributions and that won’t happen until there is nothing to contribute.

Which is why, if you really love your country, you'll show it "tough love" and shop at Wal-Mart every chance you get. Don't protest Wal-Mart. Ask your friends if they need something from Wal-Mart, and offer them a ride. "Hey, I was driving through on my way to Wal-Mart and I thought I would stop by. Need a ride?"

Over 80% of the crap sold at Wal-Mart is made in China. China is pulling the monetary rubber band as far as it can, so that when it snaps back, the Anglo-American banking system is dealt a death blow. And I don't think I have to explain to you geniuses here, that that banking system is no friend of America, or the American people.

I mean, you should know; back in the early years of the 20th century, when the American people were enjoying a growth of real savings and large industries were starting to finance their own expansion with their own savings, that the Federal Reserve banking cartel was created in order to rope America into permanent indebtedness. They succeeded at this by manipulating lending rates and the money supply. Now they have an incredible amount of power - much more than any American loyalist could ever hope to achieve.

What China is doing now is all about timing, and it's timed to coincide with peak oil.

The inner core of the communist party really do believe in the ideals of communism: egalitarianism, people power, and ultimately economic and political freedom. They just think that things have to progress naturally over a period of time, and that you can't force it to occur before it's ready. They're not serious about having capitalism long-term in China. It's just a temporary phase, allowed to go on in order to serve a specific purpose for a limited period of time.

What they're trying to do is grow their economy really fast so as to suck resources away from America just as peak oil hits. This is meant to increase the chances of America getting beaten down hard, with little possibility of recovery. Ultimately they hope to discredit American leadership (dominated by the capitalist class), so that popular uprising can occur here. (The American ruling class is fully aware of this possibility. Hence the barbed wire at the American FEMA camps lean toward the inside.) The People are not the enemy of the CCP - it's America's power elite, heavily represented by the banking and finance class.

The second part of the strategy is to allow their new capitalists to ultimately make the same mistakes of American capitalism, so that after America is taken care of, they can allow popular uprising on their own soil. That's for later. At that time, there won't be much power left anywhere to oppose revolution, so their ultimate goal of world communism will be nearer to being achieved. But in the meantime, they drive the Chinese people to work hard and sacrifice, in order to undermine the finance and industry of America - a medium-range process which is a stepping-stone to a longer-range goal.

You might ask: "why they don't just let up now and glide along to the realization of their dreams? America is already the world's largest debtor nation, and any economic growth here, (the addiction of the banking class), is being financed in large part by bond purchases by the Chinese central bank. They could pull the plug now if they wanted to. They've already won." Note that there are no guarantees that this plan is going to be a success. Just like anything else in life, (and even in physics, once you get down to the quantum level), there are no hard and fast rules, no absolutes, and no guarantees - there are only probabilities. One does everything one can to ensure success. "Crush your enemies totally" is a well-known 'rule of power' which goes way back.

I appreciate the desire of the Chinese people to live without chains, and I appreciate why they believe that they have to shake America off their backs before communism can finally be achieved.

And I think it's going to work. The only way it might not, is if the governments of the Anglo world start killing off thousands, if not millions, of possible trouble-makers. And terrorizing the people in order to cower them into submission. Even then, there's a possibility of a backlash, either by the people at large, or by their watchdogs. Everyone has friends and family who either have views which contradict those of the power elite, and therefore are potential trouble makers, or might find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. No one wants to see their friends and family die meaningless deaths for the purpose of maintaining a few powerful elite.

Unfortunately, world communism, if it's anything like the 'communism' which has been practiced around the globe over the past 100 years, will be worse than the modern 'hidden' serfdom we have over here! Eventually, I'd like to see equality, peace, and anarchy throughout the world, but that's probably just my Christian background rearing its pitiful, idealistic little head.

Anyway, shop at Wal-Mart, everybody. Pull your fair share of the rope towards this side of the Big Pond. There's no hope for big American industry anyway, just as there's no hope for big Chinese industry either, in the long run. You here on this forum should realize that very well.

America could be at peace, and living on a lot less, building a sustainable future right now. But who's in charge, and what are their goals? They robbed America blind over the past hundred years, and they show little sign of slowing down now. We need new leaders, but neither the Republicans or the Democrats will (can?) offer anything in the way of substantial change. We never would have won independence from the British if it wasn't for the help from France. Don't be so short-sighted that you're unwilling to do what's right for America in the long run.

Shop at Wal-Mart everyone!
