I could use some help with a short English text

Unread postby lorenzo » Fri 22 Jul 2005, 08:40:29

I'm trying to launch a very small online campaign, a petition (it's about the need for a biodiesel hybrid car), but I fear the English text is very bad.

If anyone of you could help me correct it, I'd be grateful. As you can see, I'm trying to embed a bit of irony in the text ("We, the People"), but I fear it's not working. :(

Please check it out here: biohybrid.

Thx a lot!

Good enough for the girls I go out with! Except...

"Responsabilities" is misspelled. It should be "responsibilities".

In your bullet points, you should say,

"...biodiesel hybrids:

* They...
* They...
* They...

(not *It...)

Lorenzo, like you say, the problem isn't so much in manufacturing the cars. The problem is in getting enough buyers.

Instead of getting people to sign a petition to put pressure on car manufacturers, why don't you ask people to sign a pledge that they would buy such cars if they were available?

THAT would convince car manufacturers.

EXACTLY!
You've completely hit the nail on the head Doly.

The problem isnt the manufacturers at all. Biodiesel is available. Hybrids are available, electrics are available, propane is available etc etc etc.
How many do you see on the streets? Nada. Zero.

The manufacturers are simply catering to what the public wants.

Good idea. I will include this. "I hereby pledge that I will buy a super-efficient biodiesel hybrid car when its available and provided it doesn't cost more than an average gasoline hybrid."

Something like that.

I think you're right. But that's what this little campaign is about: a way to try to influence what people want. (I'm hopelessly naive here, I know :-D )

I'm sure very few people even know that bio+diesel+hybrid is a realistic and super combination. (It's not a big step from gasoline hybrid, to diesel hybrid, but you can always help to pump in the message!)

Did you know that the ZAP car was taken out of production, but that an internet campaign by enthusiasts saved it? During their guerrilla campaign, more and more people learned about the ZAP's existence for the first time, and now it has become a huge success! The market researchers who were hired by the manufacturer were completely baffled! A handful of internauts not only saved the car, but spread the word so effectively that they achieved what no advertisement campaign can ever achieve! (Because they used the personal and passionate persuasion so typical of enthusiasts.)

I just throw this little petition out on the internets, you never know what happens to it.

So support me in this! Sign the petition and spread the word. :!:

All these are stylistic points, so are up to you.

Put in proper round bullet points: the twin colons look naff.

Replace The advantages of such a biodiesel hybrid car with

The advantages of biodiesel hybrid vehicles (not just cars)

Then change “it” to “they” to agree with the plural – you are not asking them to build one car!

Replace point 5 with
Greenhouse gas emissions can be substantially reduced

Point 6 with

So our reliance on petroleum, which causes terrorism, war, corruption and insecurity all over the world, can be diminished by moving to biodiesel hybrid vehicles.

Either start with uncertainty before terrorism, or cut it out altogether – it’s a diminuendo to go from terrorism to uncertainty!

Point 7(stick it anywhere above)

New, cleaner, greener technologies are the way forward for innovative automotive manufacturers from both an environmental and profit perspective.

REMEMBER YOUR AUDIENCE!!! Motor mfrs want profit
