Re: CDC flu reaches epidemic levels

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jedrider', 'I') got the flu while traveling to Central America, but came down with it fully the day after I got back. So, about three days of being under the weather. Perhaps, I could have opted for the high-tech flu vaccination solution. Anyway, not severe enough to warrant seeing a doctor. Some years, I just get colds and no flu, so I wonder if it is really worth getting vaccinated? I was one of the first to get the swine flu when that went around - again travelling to Central America via Mexico, and I wonder what the efficacy of flu vaccination was for that?? That pretty much ruined my vacation completely ;-)

jedrider, I have my doubts about the efficacy of flu vaccinations also. This year, it's reported to be about 50%, given that the flu strain has changed since the vaccine was produced. I have only been vaccinated this past fall and last winter, I went for 30 years or more without being vaccinated. I think I've had the flu maybe twice over the years. Staying away from sick people, washing your hands always before touching your eyes, mouth, nose (especially after being in public places), and just generally living a healthy lifestyle seems to be the best prevention. Sorry to hear about your bout of swine flu on your vacation, jedrider, that was unfortunate.

My profile is similar to you Wildrose, I am 52 yrs old and I rarely get even a cold. So I have never though of getting vaccinated. I am proponent of boosting immune system or at least keeping healthy to avoid any maladies. Medicines are not for me.

Yeah, I only got vaccinated over the last year because our health authority made such a big deal about it and there were some cases of younger people ending up in intensive care units and even a couple of them dying from the flu, so I finally caved. But maybe next year I won't bother. I think staying away from crowded places during flu season is key, even places like the gym (cause some people go even when they're sick!).

flu hospitilizations soar among older folk

Unread postby onlooker » Mon 09 Mar 2015, 12:37:06

here in link: http://news.yahoo.com/flu-hospitalizati ... 19401.html
It seems to me the reliance on the flu-vaccine may now be becoming problematic in the sense that the flu bug has proven to be very hardy and relentless and trying to battle it with medicine and vaccines is proving more difficult then presumed. They report in this article that the flu strains have not been matched this year well with the vaccines. I suspect it goes deeper then this, in that in general the flu virus is adapting to any vaccines just like bacterias have adapted to various antibiotics. It does feel to me that battling the flu with medicine may be an uphill battle with limited success.

First, doctors have repeatedly stated that having a flu shot is a very good idea, because even if you DO get the flu, it is highly likely to be less severe than it would be otherwise. And severe cases of flu kill lots of people, especially frail and sickly people.

Second, no disrespect, but your recent opinions on cancer, including that cancer can be cured with diet and nutrition aids doesn't exactly stand your medical opinion on the flu (or anything else) in great stead.

In the real world, where we use science, vaccines have generally been highly successful, including the flu vaccine. Just because they aren't 100% effective, doesn't mean they're a likely "uphill battle".

Try looking at a data trendline of, say, ten years instead of one year before jumping to such conclusions.

I am glad Outcast you have so much faith in Conventional medicine. I simply do not. I guess we can just agree to disagree.

I have a lot of faith in scientific knowledge, when it is backed up with lots of data.

I have NO problem with people believing in what they want and acting on that, UNTIL it causes problems like bringing back diseases like measles because people refuse to have their kids vaccinated.

We have an interesting problem here on the line between individual rights and public safety, re lack of childhood vaccinations. I'm not sure what the solution should be. Is there any amount of objective statistical evidence which would make you think vaccines like the flu vaccine is worth people taking?

Outcast, I am not discounting science in any way, thank goodness we live in a time when the scrutiny and discipline of science and empirically based conclusions reign supreme. I am simply somewhat skeptical of our continue reliance on medicines to cure people. Vaccines have certainly proven their worth over time. Chemo and Radiation have been successful in early stage cancers I will concede all that. However, that does not mean that we should or must solely rely on medicines as the first and only line of defense. My understanding is that the human body is a tremendous endowment fined tuned over eons of time in it's evolution. I refer to Hippocrates who said "let food be your medicine and medicine your food" I think what he was emphasizing was that the body could under the right conditions heal itself. So I concede in the usefulness of some vaccines and medicines. Now Outcast will you concede that a healthy diet, enough sleep, some exercise can do wonders for a person?

Re: H3N8 Influenza

Unread postby Subjectivist » Sun 19 Apr 2015, 18:42:55

The Detroit Freepress is sounding the alarm, H3N8 is spreading like mad from Chicago eastward through the Great Lakes states. Illinois, Indiana and Ohio are already putting out vet warnings about the outbreak.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he Chicago-area outbreak has sickened more than 1,100 dogs and has killed six. Cases have also been reported in Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana. No cases have been reported in Michigan, according to the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association. The outbreak started this spring in boarding facilities where dogs are in close contact.

High-risk dogs

All ages and sizes of dogs are equally at risk. But dogs with "flat snouts" like pugs, French bulldogs and Pekingese may have a tougher time dealing with the flu, because of the anatomy of their respiratory tract.

Treatment

In mild cases, the dogs are usually treated with cough suppressants. Antibiotics may be used if there is a secondary bacterial infection. The severe form needs to be treated aggressively with a broad spectrum of antibiotics, fluids and other general support treatments.

Duration

In most cases, the symptoms will last 10 to 30 days and usually go away on their own. Rest and isolation from other dogs is important.

Re: Antibiotic resistance: World on cusp of 'post-antibiotic

Tanada you might find this interesting. I was watching a documentary about how influenza could be traced back to 5000 years ago in a particular region in China. With the mixing of humans with poultry and in some cases pigs and cows. In fact it stated that pigs were a very good carrier as they could be infected with both the avian and human strains of influenza. Very interesting indeed and certainly for you T as a history buff.

The thing is both Chickens and Swine will eat carcasses of their own dead, and it has been common practice on most farms with both poultry and swine to pitch dead chickens and ducks into the swine feed trough providing a high protein snack to the pigs. If you were to cook the carcass first to kill whatever diseases it might be carrying that wouldn't be a problem, but normally they just chuck them over the fence when they find them. If the duck or chicken happens to have died from the influenza the virus is spread to the swine and some time a long long time ago the virus evolved to be able to infect the swine. Add in the fact that the farmers are handling the birds and the swine so they are getting the virus exposure frequently and once the virus evolved enough to infect both birds and mammals, two very different biological organisms, the leap from pig to human was a much smaller step. By now the hundreds or thousands of strains of influenza have cycled between birds and swine and humans so many times that they have broadened their infection mechanism enough that there are genuine 'dog flu' and 'horse flu' strains that can spread rapidly in those human domesticated animals as well as they spread in Swine.
