But by the sound of it, his way of trying to change people was shouting and getting hauled away by the cops. I doubt that was going to do anything but create a reputation of environmentalists as fundie wackos.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('onlooker', 'I') think we should give a special mention and recognition to someone like Pstarr on this site, because he was a person who tried to make a difference and persuade others to change their ways and change course. Of course the humongous tidal wave of materialism ,ignorance and corrupt leadership it appears was never going to be stopped in hindsight. Nevertheless, I feel it my duty to salute someone like Pete in the way in olden times people saluted soldiers for defending their societies.

That seems to be what you spend most of your time doing these days, though, isn't it?

Also, it seems like the only reason you wanted to save those trees was so you could shroud yourself inside them and feel superior to everyone else.

No sane person "wants doom", especially those of us who have kids. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a complete retard.

Doomerism is what happens when the scales fall from your eyes and you realise that it was all for nothing. And that Homo Sapiens Sapiens (that's a joke) is destined for the dustbin of history, just like the millions of "failed" species before him. Nothing wrong with that, every creature has its time in the sun, and then fades. But this was by our own hand, we could have made it different. We had the means to a "happy ending", but we blew it.

I never thought it would apply to our generation, but it is very apt:

If
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make a heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Because the poor, who are working everyday for survival, don't have the luxury of posting endless reams of doom that no one cares about but them and other doomers.

Or maybe they do, but you don't read their language?

China had a national one child policy aimed at reducing the rate of overshoot. So clearly there was very significant discussion there some decades ago. It seems Germany and other Western nations are trying to do more about carbon, so there is also a national discussion there.

These are not sufficient efforts, but they show some institutional awareness. Hell even the Pope made some comments about reducing over shoot.

Mericans seem to be especially dense on the matter, deep into denial. Maybe it has more to do with our penchant for feeling ordained. You know, Manifest Destiny. Maybe too many of us just think it's all Gods work and we have no business interfering.

From Wiki
"In the 19th century, manifest destiny was a widely held belief in the United States that its settlers were destined to expand across North America. There are three basic themes to manifest destiny:

The special virtues of the American people and their institutions
The mission of the United States to redeem and remake the west in the image of agrarian America
An irresistible destiny to accomplish this essential duty[3]"
Historian Frederick Merk says this concept was born out of "a sense of mission to redeem the Old World by high example ... generated by the potentialities of a new earth for building a new heaven".[4]"

This kind of thinking mow seems to be called "American Exceptionalism."

I quoted my daughter here before but she summed it up quite simply back a few years when she was going to the university in the Philippines and involved in reproductive health care and other issues around poverty.

She told me that the poor wont force any change because they are exhausted at the end of the day having worked long hour days just to feed their families while the wealthy, who have all the time and resources to effect change, are the last to do so because they are beneficiaries of the inequities.

My daughter was sending this message from far away in urban Manila but it seemed to have a lot of relevancy to what has been unfolding here in the US as well.

There is an intractable situation that keeps inertia in place. In reference to social cohesion this inertia will have its breaking points, kind of like seismic fault lines. The tremors will be ecological, Katrina type events most likely.

But the birds are singing and howler monkeys greeting the day with their baritone calls. Can't think too much about doom with the sun warming up the canopy and beauty abounds :)

I agree with respect to the poor. But there is, as squilliam notes, a large English speaking middle and upper class who don't find their way here.

It's a great point, we have a number of Europewn members here and the kiwis and Auzzies. No Indians, Chineese, Japaneese, Africans, etc. I wonder how much the Internet is blocked in those regions. I surely see access changes between the USA, Canada, and Bahamas.

Maybe doom is kind of a white thing. I know it sounds sort of racist in a way but if you took a poll of all the doom sites, I'd wager the vast majority are white. Perhaps even to the extent that far outweighs their racial percentages in their respective countries.
