FOOD: THE Rice Thread (merged)

Is anyone growing small amounts of rice? I'm thinking about giving it a try. It seems a lot more labor intensive than other grains, but I eat rice almost every day and would be loath to live without it. I understand there are mountain varieties that are better suited for cooler climates, but I haven't had any luck tracking down seed yet.

I'm not a total doomer - I figure it will probably be possible to get wheat as long as I live, but I'm not so sure about rice.

Heh. Plus, I'll be able to greet the Chinese when they get here. Ni hao! Wo you bai fan! :-D

The Japanese have developed varieties that can be grown in Hokkaido, the northernmost main island of Japan, where it never could be grown before because the climate was too cold. Hokkaido's still fairly warm, however, so the northern limit of rice is still way below that of wheat. Sigh. I'm with you on that - I'm from big wheat country, and as much as I love it, I don't think I can live without rice either.

I wonder when rice started to become common food in Northern Europe... that could give us some clue about how easy it is to transport.

I'm trying wild rice...i'm currently looking for streams by my house and calm runoff ponds where the cattails grow. This fall i'll be scattering wild rice in there in hopes it'll grow on it's own & hopefully reseed itself year after year.

There are dryland varieties of rice which don't require flooding. Also, rice does not require transplanting though this is done in traditional rice culture. But Masanobu Fukuoka grew it without transplanting.

Why the hell would you want to grow it?
Heres the skinny man. Time is money, PO or not. Your gonna put alot of time and effort into rice.
For about 300 or 400 bucks you can go to a wholesale distributor and buy enough rice to last you half a lifetime.
While that may seem expensive, compared to the tool/land/time investment you'd make to grow rice I think you'd come out ahead.

Now, if you want to do it for personal enjoyment thats a whole different ballgame.

No disagreement there. In fact, I have quite a lot of rice stocked up. ;)

However, something like 20 years of rice would be a hell of a lot of rice. And, even in the best circumstances, you could lose all of it to a moisture problem or bugs or a house that burns down or (insert random disaster here). I've been trying to learn how to grow and propagate all the plants I consider essential. That way, I always have the ability to grow something if I want to. I don't want to grow an acre of rice, but I wouldn't mind growing a 10'x'10' patch for practice and to get new seed every year.

Actually, I guess you're right on the amounts. If you ate a dry cup of rice every day, that comes out to about 22 gallons of dry rice. So, say it comes out to 5, 5 gallon buckets per year. That is not a lot of space. If I live to be 90, I'll only need 295 buckets of rice.

Still, I feel better when I know how to produce it if I need to.

you are not upset that I did your math for you? Let's try again. 50lb bag rice cost $15 US. That means rice cost 35 cents per pound. Man eat 1 lb rice per day. Man eat 365lb. rice per year. 1200/365= OOPS <> 3 YEARS.

so I am learning to grow rice and you specialty cop version 007 are storing rice in your bugout cabin with your big gun defending it from bad bitches. Whos smarter?
Apparently the guy who can use English properly.

Your math is still as fucked as you are. Who the hell eats a POUND of rice a day?? Oh I know, someone who cant handle anything more difficult there VERY simple math. In other words, your an idiot who cant do math so you have to come up with a completely bullshit argument to try and look right. Your idiocy is appalling.

Rice in Indonesia

Postby rogerhb » Wed 15 Mar 2006, 04:06:26

Rice praises 'moderate' Indonesia

Okay, Indonesia, although part of OPEC, now technically an importer, and also an economic basket case....

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')undreds of people protested in Jakarta as Ms Rice's two-day visit began.

Chanting anti-US slogans, they held a rowdy demonstration outside the heavily guarded US embassy building in the capital.

What? US Admin have to see protestors? What is the world coming to?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')peaking in Jakarta with Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda, Ms Rice praised Indonesia's co-operation in fighting terror and its pursuit of democracy as an "inspiration" to the Muslim world.

"I think Indonesia has a very big role to play as an example of what moderation, tolerance and inclusiveness of society can be," she said.

So is totally clueless on what happened in East Timor, the way the army operates, and the clash between muslims and christians.

I agree. This statement, like so many others, will blow up in her face. Indonesia is a crazy land, only one step away from chaos.

She's doing well while impersonating Phineas Fogg, see how many more people we can upset.

Protesters interrupt speech by Rice

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('7', 'P')rotesters twice interrupted a speech by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Thursday after anti-war activists clashed with police outside a Sydney venue.

Five protesters were charged when about 40 anti-war demonstrators rallied outside Sydney's Conservatorium of Music, which was patrolled by police on horseback and members of the dog squad.

I understand you can grow rice anywhere with a reasonably long growing season and good rainfall (or irrigation); there are upland rice varieties that don't need flooding.

Here's a source of adaptable rice varieties seeds:
