The Republicans control the executive and the legislature. They will name conservative judges. For the first time in a long time grid lock can be broken and the government can actually move forward.

What moving forward means is what many worry about.

The interesting thing is that now the republicans have to own all these really complicated issues, the same issues they blamed Obama and the Dems for failing like solving health care and the Middle East instabilities. They move from obstructionist to having to deal with serious issues.

Final popular vote tally:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')RUMP 48% 59,033,713
CLINTON 48% 59,169,894

Clinton had 136,181 more popular votes.

Electoral college:

Trump - 276
Clinton - 218

(I think those numbers are right, I saw it on google, someone correct if it's wrong)

Hillary wins the popular vote .....but not the Electoral College

this is a chance for new leadership on the left

@ Ibon ....yes good question re the response when Trump can't get the Mexicans to pay for the wall or these extra jobs fail to appear

obviously some Americans still don't realize that other countries can do things as well or better than the US can

I can see many Asian countries turning to other countries for trade.....China and Japan in particular

Interesting times ahead

The difference is that even as he cusses and harasses, Duterte has shown in the past to support workers, women, gays, Muslims, indigenous folk, soldiers, Communists, the police, businessmen, and more. In addition, he has the support of the majority of citizens and neighboring countries.

So far, it looks like the complete opposite for Trump.

Finally, if there is anything similar about the two, it's that they face decades of problems piling up in their respective countries, with the situation worse for the Philippines:

Several Asian countries may lose because of the results:

but as shown in another thread, more countries from the region appear to be distancing themselves from the U.S. and plan to engage in deals with each other.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ibon', 'S')o now we ask ourselves, all of us here who know the deeper systemic reasons why American culture can never retain its former exceptionalism, how will the masses respond when Donald fails to delivery on impossible promises?

He'll only serve one term...
There’s a strange irony related to this subject [oil and gas extraction] that the better you do the job at exploiting this oil and gas, the sooner it is gone.

I agree but not because he would be defeated in a second term. I think he will find the job boring and frustrating. Why do you think Obama plays so much golf? The job is not any fun.

+1

As a moderate, I regret the chance to move the SCOTUS to the left for a change and fix things like obstruction against women getting abortions in Texas, helping pave the way to greener energy, etc.

OTOH, if Capitol Hill denies Trump his crazy level of tax cuts, maybe we could move toward smaller budget deficits. That would be a nice change. (Not that I don't like tax cuts -- but let's get real, pay our bills, pay our debt, act like adults and do things like repair the infrastructure, first. THEN we might deserve tax cuts).

But on things like health care, yeah. The one other thing about a HRC victory I would have liked is the idea to try adding Medicare to the choices for those over 55 -- presuming they'd pay the full freight which might be $10K or $12K, and not mess up the system for the over 65 folks). That could be a good experiment to test out "Medicare for All" and actually try to do something constructive about health care. As it is, aside from empty promises, based on lack of substance, I'm pretty sure Trump has exactly zippo on that. So if they try to repeal the ACA, then what? Back to 50ish million with no health care?

And, it will be amusing to see Trump try to magically "restore all the jobs", as though he controls global technology and demographics.
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

Unlike Hillary, who used her concession speech to attack Trump again, Obama just gave a very gracious statement this morning to congratulate Trump for his victory.

Congrats to Obama for having the class to endorse the election results and promise to cooperate fully in the transition of power to President-elect Trump.

As President Obama just said "We're all on the same team."

Jobs aren't moving overseas because of technology and demographics. US factory jobs moved overseas because Clinton's NAFTA treaty and Obama's proposed TPP treaty allow factories to move overseas and fire their US workers and replace them with cheap foreign labor while retaining free access into US markets.

Its not unreasonable for the US to have a policy of trying to keep US factory jobs in the US. Other countries like Germany, France and Sweden do this---why not the US?

Cheers!
