Two points in defense of the Vegan diet. First does anybody dispute that plant food is loaded with vitamins-minerals and many phytochemicals. Second, that they help maintain the body in alkaline state which is widely considered a state less conducive to disease development than acidic state.

First phytochemicals by definition come from plants so that is a circular argument. Second most vitamins with the notable exception of Vitamin C are fat soluble and therefor are much more available in animal products than most plant products. Notable exceptions would be in fruits like Avocado and Olives and in the nuts like Walnuts which are rich in vitamins. I am an omnivore, whether you think this is by design or evolution or some combination it is still a fundamental fact. My biological machinery is designed to operate optimally on a mixture of plant and animal foods, though I can survive on just one or the other exclusively for some time if necessary.
In my honest opinion Veganism as in the strict avoidance of all animal products is an attempt to deny there are an excess of humans on the planet. Saying we could all survive on an animal free diet is just a way to avoid the fact that omnivores thrive on a mixed diet with a ratio somewhere around 50/50 between plant and animal sources. The old fashion Vegetarian patterns that held sway until the last 20 years or so where the diet had many animal products in the dairy/egg categories or the addition of Fish, or both has been demonstrated to be well balanced enough to promote good health. The more extreme Vegan standards require a great deal of effort to ensure all the necessary vitamins and minerals are present in the diet, usually with the addition of artificially produced vitamin and mineral supplements. To get a wide enough spectrum of plant foods to cover all health needs the food has to be transported very long distances during the 'off season'. Not a lot of plant foods growing outside in the winter/wet/dry season depending on your local climate.
