Impossible. Plant morphology and cellular function is a complex system. GMO success among higher plants are actually rather rare, only two (bT and roundup-ready varieties) show proven long-term commericial value.

pstarr, though I agree with you on each of the other points, I don't think flat assertions like this (i.e. "Impossible") are reasonable or helpful.

Quick Google searches provided plenty of recent and promising looking hits on GMO crops and cross-breeding crops having success with both drought (i.e corn) and temperature (rice), for example.

In the above case, it seems both drought and heat are largely mitigated in the very-wet-crop -- rice.

While traditional cross breeding has so far achieved the best results, this piece makes clear that insights for genetic trait manipulation to aid in drought and stress mitigation in plants is certainly not considered impossible by scientists. (The heat resistant link focuses mainly on drought. I presume the implication is that high heat tends to increase drought issues).
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

The norm in most rice growing areas is to harvest at the end of rainy season/ monsoon, then to fallow until planting at the rains begin again, 6-9 months later. (Husks are usually burned, an utter waste of both oil & mulch) The odd pumpkin or melon vine goes in but mostly there is no yield or deliberate fallow cropping in the dry season. The obvious crop is hemp. Cannabis has been acclimatised to a broader range of extremes than any other cultivated plant. From coastal Sumatra on the equator, to varieties thriving in the Himalayas or Scandinavia. Minimal inputs, multiple useful outputs including extremely nutritious seed, very little water required, laid back communities with blacksmiths expert in turning guns into ploughshares.

As I said elsewhere in the forum, this fellow has some mental issues so its pointless reasoning with him. He cannot contemplate history in objective fashion, has a rudimentary notion of cause and effect and is a jumble of noise going on in there. A highly subjective individual but as I said, trying to reason with him is pointless.

He has periodic bouts of lucidity but is clearly overwhelmed the rest of the time.

Man don't you remember what it was like here a few years ago? Cog has plenty of decorum compared to some around then. We have been over & over the bannings issue & the consensus at the decision level has been not to go down the road of TOD. The site works, the board works, there are raw emotional communications & scientific ones & everything in between.

As Dave is suggesting, when you find yourself screaming for someone to be banned, you may be just a tad over invested in site number million & something.

I personally am not calling for him to be banned nor can one reasonably infer that from the exasperation presented by many others on here. Going from exasperation to book burning is something of a leap.

But conduct of a reasonable order is entirely natural to expect....and consistency as well. This site is the property of someone else who has expended much time, money and effort to ensure that his or objective is realised.....clearly he or she is not a cornucopian or else this place would be selling Wall Street and not highlighting resource controversy.

In that spirit, Cog should at least offer us the courtesy of a reasoned denial, not smug one liners. That is what overwhelms places such as this with the mentally infirm thereby causing the owners real and measurable loss.

Speaking from platforms, consistency would be much appreciated. We are here because of someone elses hard effort and sacrifice. Let us not usurp his or her spirit.

There is no postulating. One merely looks at your facts and the facts are that in an ocean of the untelligible, there are islands of some semblance of a reasoned position, even if one may disagree with it.

Lets postulate what this place would look like in short shift if it were to become another haunt of smug one liners as is often the case elsewhere on the net. No one goes to the effort and cost of any project only to see it overrun with the unsound of mind.

I personally have no issues with you taking your positions robustly. For example why are Democrat policies less workeable as opposed to Republican ones other than the usual pinko, lefty, hippie, one liners as seems to often be the case with your ilk. I really havent a clue what you think and other then a lot of noisy gibbering which quickly drives audience from these places. However, if you from time to time explained Republican policies with the depth of your passion, garbled admittedly that it is, hey you might win me over. After I am the ultimate capitalist being a market price discoverer. All I need is for one of you fellows to convince me that it can last the pace.
