I'm not sure what I have to say is applicable for you, but here goes.

1. Buy things that will decrease the total cost of your life. Would a pressure canner help? Would fruit trees help? Would a chicken coop help?

2. Find a way to time-shift your purchases. When things go on sale, buy it cheap and stack it deep. When things get expensive, sell. I did fairly well with silver and .22LR, well enough to outfit me for archery for $0.00. Turkey is $0.99/lb in my area right now, so my shelves are filling up with smoked turkey chili. How could I pass that up?

3. Remember that anything you can hold in your hand can be taken away from you.

Hi Ayoob

Yes they do apply and i do apply them :-)

1. I use pressure cooker/canner for almost everything. It is my experience that with some careful timing the food gets just perfect. And I save approx. 60% of the energy. I have for both electricity and natural gas.

2. I always time-shift my purchases. And I am getting better at buying large amounts, but for some reason it takes some courage to run amok when the offer is there :-D.

About 70% of the building materials for my house was bought on discount moments. All of the more expensive foods - like meat - is bought when there is a special offer. My house itself was on "offer". I waited about 1½ year after the subprime crisis and then i found a place that had been taken over by the government - which they just needed to get rid off. So i got it at the price of the land underneath. - Not that it was much more worth. But here in Denmark it is not easy to find a house that is neighbourgh to forest and beach without paying a million for it. I got it at about 20% of the "normal" price.

3. I remember :-(

But thanks for the ideas.

@Vtsnowedin: I wish I had the possibility of building a roadway to my house. But I am right next to the road.. So that will have to wait.

You are welcome to visit and see if we can find a place for a roadway :-D

My house is the one next to the forest. The picture was taken a while ago when I was still mounting solar panels..

Google gives these coordinates.

The one with the seven different roof sections.? Looks like your all set on roads and drive. Is that apple orchard to your South west and oak forest to your north?

@vtsnowedin:

Yes that is the one. To the south/West is a cherry orchard. To the North the forest and yes i have some nice old Oak trees at the forest perimeter as well as two large lovely walnut trees. To the East fields alternating Wheat and beats. On the far side of the field is forest again.

"Looks like your all set on roads and drive". I am sorry I do not understand this sentence.

"all set" means you have enough and don't need any more.
I would say you are in a very nice location with a lot of good points looking forward to an uncertain future. Even though you don't own the crop land around you you might be able to use or rent a bit of it in a future where the current market for the crops gets disrupted. There is wood available in the forest (might have to steal it in a pinch) and access to the sea not far away. You could do a lot worse.

The coordinates you write are in Kazakhstan? - If I switch them they are in the barents Sea? :-)

Thanks for your opinion. It was the best I could do here in Denmark. I also chose the place because the area is very poor compared to danish standards and that the area is being emptied of people that are moving to the major cities. This means that the taxation on the property is very low.

If I chose a place near copenhagen for example the price would be a factor of 40 higher !! Including the rent/taxation ! My largest expense is food now.

Argh. I should have noticed there was an uneven number of minusses - i thought they were separation between the coordinates.

What a lovely area! I am jealous. A little more to the West though would be better ;-)

Vermont is pretty hilly and the soil is thin and rocky. It helps to keep the riffraff out :-) Yes there is better land to the west as in Ohio or Illinois but I'm dug in here and will stay the course.

But yes - that is the sort of area I am looking for. If I can find a foreclosure or dirt cheap property I am probably relocating.

Preferably with a house in shambles - so i can fix it myself. I have learned a number of things doing my first house here - so I will make all new mistakes :-)

But I might need some extra housing closer to a place where we can get jobs?

I have some experience making mistakes on a house!!!
The wife and I built our house with the exception of the metal roofing our selves and I still don't have all the siding on even though the children are all grown and gone. They have a pry bar called a "cat's paw" for pulling out nails where you have made a mistake and need to try again. I wore one of these out over the course of building the house.

:) I used only 4000 nails on my house for the roof covering. But about 15.000 screws for the rest of the house. I would never have thought it took so many screws !!

Anyway - I will post again in this thread in a little while when the decision has been made on how to distribute the wealth.

It has been a while, but things has moved on somewhat.

The gold & jewels stays in the bankvault - after all 150k$ is not much.

The 150K$ cash has been distributed so far as this: (except now its 100k$ because of the rise of the dollar value)
1. 10K$ on having a good time. I.e. eating better quality food, buying some toys for my 3 y.o. boy, a Bernina 730 Artista for the wife and things like that.

2. 20k$ as emergency stash

3. 5K$ on starting up a company

4. 1-5K$ on more solar power

5. 5K$ on polytunnels and raised beds.

6. 5K$ on getting eyes fixed for me and wife.

7. 10K$ ready on a investment account for the right opportunity.

8. 5k$ on prepping. I.e. cold storage, canning equipment, bulk purchases of cheap long expiry date foods.

9. 5-10k$ on tools and machinery

Remainder ready for investments when the opportunity arises.
