Movie: "The Deal"

Unread postby Barbara » Mon 20 Jun 2005, 12:33:52

http://www.thedeal-movie.com/ They call it "The day after tomorrow of oil", with Christian Slater, and it's written by a former VicePresident of Goldman Sachs (is the guy trying to tell us something?)

Someone posted a link to that page before, but I hadn't realized Christian Slater was in it. Wow, there are actually actors people have heard of in this flick.

I think it's still facing an uphill slog, because it's a small indy, and won't have the studios' promotional power behind it. But some indies do hit it big. ("Blair Witch," "My Big Fat Greek Wedding.")

It says it's showing in Boston starting June 17th. Any Boston members see it listed at theatres? It looked a tiny bit boring from the trailer, pleased though I am to have the topic of peak oil covered in a movie with Selma Blair and Christian Slater.

I'm sure they'll totally botch this with some moronic plot and a positive/happy ending.

But at least it might wake up a few more hundred people and make them look deeper into the problem and act on that knowledge.

Wow, I'm impressed. Check out the after the show part of the website.

Here are a few snippets:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')il production is already falling in 33 of the world's 48 largest oil producing countries, including 6 of the 11 members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

World demand for oil will likely exceed world supply of oil by 2010 (The Futurist, World Oil)

Drilling in Alaska would produce no oil for 10 years and will ultimately produce only 6 months worth of US oil consumption in total (US Geological Survey). It represents only 0.3% of the world's oil supply, and will ultimately reduce our dependence on foreign oil by only 1-5%.

Looks good, this is just the sort of thing we need to raise awareness and open up the subject of peak oil for general discussion. I hope that it gets wider distribution and that we can see it in the UK.

Hmmmmmm, Hollywood takes a serious issue and makes up a story around it. Yea, that's just the thing to convince people the issue is real, rather than, of course, just another hollywood story.

Strangely enough, the method works. You'd be surprised the amount of people that take an idea seriously once they see it in a film.

I think there's several reasons why this is:

1. They'd normally not be exposed to the idea anyhow.
2. A movie visualises the idea, shows its potential (usually extreme worst-case) outworkings of it.
3. It does this at an easily understandable level.
4. It does it in a reasonable timeframe (approx. 2 hours, usually).

This method has its advantages - for example, the absolute worst-case scenario (and sometimes even worse than) is presented, mainly because it's the most marketable and watchable. Showing people the worst it can get is ever so slightly more likely to push people into action.

Unfortunately it looks as though it is giong to have a limited showing. It doesn't look as though its going to get anywhere near as much play as it should.

Well, I'd suppose it *isn't* coming to a cinema near me ...
