The Gathering Storm

Unread postby Falconoffury » Mon 20 Jun 2005, 00:16:22

I am going to do my best to create a list of all events that will make life in the near future very difficult for everyone. Please add to this list or object to any of my items.

1. peak oil - I'm sure we have all done enough research to know what this will do to our world.

2. peak North American natural gas - Natural gas tends to fall in a cliff rather than a slope. It may run out very suddenly, unlike oil. This will strain our electrical grid because an increasing amount of natural gas has been used for electricity. It will also skyrocket heating oil prices. Many old people may freeze to death in their homes.

3. coming avian influenza pandemic - http://peakoil.com/fortopic7619-0-asc-0.html

4. coming dollar crash - http://peakoil.com/fortopic8879.html

5. climate change/global warming - This has caused some serious droughts in some parts of the world, such as Colorado. It also has increased the number and strength of hurricanes and typhoons. We can expect our oceans to rise, and species of living things to go extinct at an increasing rate. http://peakoil.com/fortopic8441.html

I think those are the main things. Feel free to add.
"If humans don't control their numbers, nature will." -Pimentel
"There is not enough trash to go around for everyone," said Banrel, one of the participants in the cattle massacre.
"Bush, Bush, listen well: Two shoes on your head," the protesters chant

6. Economic depression or collapse.

7. Resource wars.

8. Die-off (this may take some time...may or may not happen soon).

9. Overall decline in standard of living for the middle class which will lead to the eventual destruction of middle class.

"Housing Bubble" - In some places, it's bad supposedly. In others, not so.

It may or may not be related to the mainstream view of the housing bubble but, there's also the huge problem with the suburbs being completely dependant on cheap oil for survival for many...

Natural gas doesn't go to zero instantly, but rather suffers a rather steep decline. A field won't just stop producing all together one day unless it suffers a massive calamity. Rather, it will decline at a fairly steep level (20%, 30%). That is a cliff compared to 3-5% for oil, which is why commentators have said so.

I don't think you are getting it.

Let's make an analogy. Suppose that a person has a slow but mortal disease, at the same time they've got an infection that could kill them very quickly, and a list of other minor ailments.

Now, which one should he be worried about?

The quick one of course but it's nice to list them all :-D

OK. Don't laugh...

17. The extermination of the honey bee (Apis mellifera).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')t may seem insignificant to the millions of folks living in urban areas where they rarely see a bee unless they grow flowers. But honeybees around the world are dying and the impact could mean a major reduction in the world food supply.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Carrie', '1')1. Declining grain production

Which leads to a shortage in Hamburger production, which in return poses the end of the world for a lot of people right there. Just like the gas lines in the 70's we'll see long lines in front of those fast food drive throughs...

YES, I have heard about the bees being in trouble on an off but this stuff does not register with politicians. The same was with acid rain, elephants, tigers , gorillas etc. These people that spend all their life in cities these things apparently have no meaning. I guess they all failed biology or simply erased it from their minds.

I guess PRICE will need to wake them UP. :)

Then it will be too late. :(

I figure the slow mortal disease is Peak Oil.
I guess the quick infection is avian flu.
Am I right?
