KillJoy:
What is killing your bees? pesticide overspray, air pollution from oil sand recovery efforts, other agressive bees? It really sucks when you cant get your fruit trees and other crops pollinated.

Yes, Shanny, thanks for clarifying. It is the varroa mite.

I first discovered the problem a few years ago when I found bees unable to fly, scrambling around on the plank I keep near their entrance. Their wings were malformed, and so the poor suckers just spun around, helpless.

The varroa mite doesn't just SUCK THE LIFE out of poor bee larvae: they transmit a virus to the bee which causes "threadwing." (Should we attribute this to the "Intelligent Designer"?) Only strong pesticides work, and not always.

There's also another for the list:

18 (?). The book "Everything You Know Is Wrong" warned us about this: the presence of BSE--"mad cow disease"--in America. The testing process has been a joke: test just a few thousand animals instead of a few million as they do in Europe, and then pretend the disease isn't here.

And you thought gramma had Alzheimer's?

This is the number one reason I stopped eating beef (among others: rBGH, e. coli, colon cancer risk, etc.). Not surprisingly, this was shortly after reading Fast Food Nation. The beef industry has scary-power in the US and I don't doubt they'd do everything they could to hide BSE if they found it.

Last thing I need is holes in my brain when the world is going to hell in 2050. 8O
