$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('NTBKtrader', 'h')e may be right but only because of a depression/drastic demand destruction, when investors figure out that the economy won't grow anymore it will be a race to the bottom...

I don't see that argument at all. Demand destruction is nothing more than the standard supply/demand dynamic. At $120/barrel, just as some supply sources may become profitable that wouldn't otherwise be, some demand types will become uneconomical and shift. Markets rarely move in a straight linear fashion. They ebb and flow. I do think there is a significant potential for a temporary market pull back at any point, but thinking that oil is ever going back to $10 a barrel is just silly. Supply appears very much to be maxed out. Even if per-capita demand stays stable, the population is increasing exponentially. The only limitation on demand is price. When the price declines, demand spikes, and price heads right back up. Long term, price is going no where but up.

"Better top indicators are the endless money managers constantly being trot out in front of viewers, listeners, and readers of the mainstream media, all of whom are now certified oil cycle and technology experts, and KNOW FOR SURE that peak oil’s FOR REAL! As our competing TV station put it today, “There Will Be Higher Oil Prices”. That was across the lower third of their screen for an entire interview with some dude who says that there’s $30-40 of speculative premium in oil but that $140, $150 are the next stop anyway. He even said outloud after explaining his logic of higher prices, “It doesn’t make sense for prices to go higher…but they will!”
From the Cody Willard article.

I think he may be partially right. Commodity prices tend to go up and crash down. I think the longer term trend will be for more expensive oil, though. I think it will correct to around 100 or 110, and then climb back towards $140.

We'll see...
Deep in the mud and slime of things, even there, something sings.

cody willard is a hip hop, cool , techy, columnist with the latest
hair styles.

Why he wants to talk about oil is anybodies guess, I guess
its a fashionable thing to do nowadays.
He should go on Dr. Phil or Oprah and talk about things that
are more important to him like being bad, fitting with the in crowd,
balckberries, etc.

I cannot believe there is actually a thread like this, so much
that I had to post. What an insult to the forum

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Most people's lifetime of interaction with energy has been limited to price. They have no insight. That they then say stupid things comes as no surprise.

Ostensibly all three are male.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')nd who is Hansen?

Highly forgettable 90's pop band. Their only hit song was called "MMM Bop". They're the only other somewhat famous people with that hair cut that I can think of.

Gotta say Tanada in a website so full of much better, scarier, hysterically funny threads where cannibalism, Monte's kill the old folks, the once lambasted and vilified and now proven correct posters of yesteryear exist, this one is pretty lame.

Except for a reference to a Fox News article early on showing that they apparently knew better than all peak oilers combined contemporaneous to this thread, there really isn't much here. Last I heard smallpoxgirl had gone back to BAU even and could no longer face participating in the charade of peak oil.

I seem to remember those who thought there would be no problem supplying exponentially growing consumption of cheap conventional oil for the forseeable future. Of course, that was the accepted wisdom of the time.

No. That is a strawman assigned to those who didn't nod furiously as required. Yergin for example. The only people who have claimed oil production could ever increase exponentially was someone like Bartlett.

People have issues balancing two sets of ideas in their heads. I run a day trading business and a tax consultancy. Both at the heart of BAU.

Its this exposure that convinces me that the system is going to go through increasingly more devastating crises before collapsing in on itself (marked by irreversible consumer deflation and energy inflation).

Nothing short of a miracle can avoid the juggernaut speeding in our directions and roughly 3 decades ahead. In fact both opposing forces are gathering speed for a showdown of epic proportions and denial is a central facet of that approaching crisis.
