But, like Eng, Stone has faith in new technology, such as the oft-touted gas or hydrogen-powered fuel cells for cars, and the market to deliver oil substitutes. "How long is it going to take for alternative transport fuels to play a significant role?" he asks. "I would say it's going to be about 20 years.

20 years of lets say 2% depletion in a year

At lets say 86 mb/day. that means we need to replace the equivalent of 40% of our oil consumption or an equivalent of 34.4 million barrels a day... in just 20 years.....

They don't get the time and the scale factor.

If we peak in the near future that is

The Listener article was the topic of a thread months ago

NZ Listener PO article was just another cop-out

You could have been the first person to reply to it
Let us make him who shall nourish and sustain us. What shall we do to be invoked; to be remembered in the earth.
We have tried with our first creatures but we could not make them venerate us.
So let us try to make obedient respectful beings who shall

Peak Oil - a non-event

Thank you skiwi. I followed the links in your response and found this site, which I think many of the viewers of this forum will be interested to read:

http://www.ucsusa.org/clean_energy/rene ... /index.cfm

and to refer back to repeatedly. To me, this site has much credibility.

Comments anyone?

I think the Wikipedia article is a very fair summary of the situation, giving the arguments on both sides.

For local (NZ) responses to the Listener article that were printed in later editions, see http://oilcrash.com/articles/listnr02.htm. The sidebar gives 2 replies that were printed in the next edition.

Also, the introductory note says it all - the author of the original article was a Government employee when this was written.
Let's hope the next generation have a sense of humour ... our generation will need it.
