At lets say 86 mb/day. that means we need to replace the equivalent of 40% of our oil consumption or an equivalent of 34.4 million barrels a day... in just 20 years.....

They don't get the time and the scale factor.

Thank you skiwi. I followed the links in your response and found this site, which I think many of the viewers of this forum will be interested to read:

I think the Wikipedia article is a very fair summary of the situation, giving the arguments on both sides.

For local (NZ) responses to the Listener article that were printed in later editions, see http://oilcrash.com/articles/listnr02.htm. The sidebar gives 2 replies that were printed in the next edition.

Also, the introductory note says it all - the author of the original article was a Government employee when this was written.
