Re: THE Poverty Thread - Create Good Jobs!

Unread postby WittyK » Sun 12 Aug 2012, 16:03:18

For a large share of Americans, the U.S. labor market no longer works as a reliable way to build a stable career and support their families.

This was true before the job losses of the current recession (as of October 2011, the country had 6.3 million fewer jobs since the start of the recession in December 2007). And unless there are structural changes in the economy, it will be true again once the recession has passed.

Down on the bottom rungs of the economic ladder, where too many people who once had middle-income careers now reside, the real value of wages when adjusted for inflation has been declining for years.

One in four jobs does not pay enough to lift a family of four out of poverty. The federal government tries to compensate low-wage workers through programs such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

Without this and other forms of assistance, many more working families would be struggling to put food on the table and pay for housing, utilities, health care, child care, transportation to and from work, and more. Many families are forced to survive by living under a mounting pile of debt.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Mypeter', 'P')overty is worst now that before..but with people holding together to help each other...nothing is impossible...Keep fighting poverty!

Poverty is an inevitable consequence of peak oil. As energy costs rise, economic growth will falter and most sectors of the global economy will be hurt.

Make your plans accordingly.

If the truth be known, the vast majority of people alive today in the west have no real idea what true poverty really is!
In the first half of the 20th century, it wasn't unusual for people to starve to death on the streets of European or American cities, children dying of preventable diseases etc, things we now associate with the third world.

It's when the welfare state collapses that we'll see a return of that scale of poverty, along with fighting between migrants and locals over those low paid jobs that the locals currently "Won't get out of bed for that crap wage!" for, but now must or go hungry.

Does Solving Energy Poverty Help Solve Poverty? Not Quite

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')Recent research questions a widely held belief. The head of Swedfund, the development finance group, recently summarized a widely-held belief: “Access to reliable electricity drives development and is essential for job creation, women’s empowerment and combating poverty.” This view has been the driving force behind a number of efforts to provide electricity to the 1.1 billion people around the world living in energy poverty. But does electricity really help lift households out of poverty? We set out to answer this question. We designed an experiment in which we first identified a sample of “under grid” households in Western Kenya—structures that were located close to but not connected to a grid. These households were then randomly divided into treatment and control groups. In the treatment group, we worked closely with the rural electrification agency to connect the households to the grid for free or at various discounts. In the control group, we

Im in Vietnam at the moment you see a lady carrying 6 cabbages and a handful of garlic in 2 wicker baskets on a bamboo pole.
That is probably what she needs to feed herself her family and pay her bills for the day.
She seemed happy,in fact everyone seems happy and they would be considered poor by our standards.
Their work-life balance and social lifestyle would be envied by anyone working a dead end job, paying a mortgage and trying to keep up with the Jones in the first world.
If you are safe have food, shelter, can pay your bills and still have free time to spend with your friends and family your winning
