What do you know a TV movie about a scenario that isnt actually too far fetched, other that the "natural disaster" part. In reality the scenario is probably easier to achieve that what the movie probably portrays, sadly enough. If the movie is set in 2007, those prices could even get there w/o the disasters.

Compare that to Atomic Train, which requires soo many inconcievable things in series its laughable. (i.e. nukes aren't transported on trains in the U.S. anymore, would not be armed, would not be transported with hazardous chemicals, etc.

Many people have forgotten this:$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')The ironic part of the whole story was that only twelve days prior to the trouble on the island, the public got to see first hand a nuclear power plant emergency on the silver screen. The China Syndrome debuted right before, with some dialog that you wouldn't think twice about, but make your skin crawl after the accident. First man: "I don't know. They might have come close to exposing the core." Second man: "If that's true, then we came very close to the China Syndrome. The number of people killed would depend on which way the wind was blowing. Render an area the size of Pennsylvania permanently uninhabitable.".

What the heck, all it would take is a big quake under the Persian Gulf, the Tsunami would wreck the oil transhipping ports for months, if not years.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('killJOY', 'J')ust my $.02, but if it's anything like "Day After Tomorrow" it's going to suck. That was a terribly implausible look at global warming that probably did not do much to increase people's awareness.
The joke is on us. Turns out that there's some recent evidence for the scenario pictured in "Day After Tomorrow":$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')ritain faces big chill as ocean current slows
by Jonathan Leake, Science Editor:
CLIMATE change researchers have detected the first signs of a slowdown in the Gulf Stream — the mighty ocean current that keeps Britain and Europe from freezing.
They have found that one of the “engines” driving the Gulf Stream — the sinking of supercooled water in the Greenland Sea — has weakened to less than a quarter of its former strength.
The weakening, apparently caused by global warming, could herald big changes in the current over the next few years or decades. Paradoxically, it could lead to Britain and northwestern and Europe undergoing a sharp drop in temperatures.
Such a change has long been predicted by scientists but the new research is among the first to show clear experimental evidence of the phenomenon.

OTOH, in the real world, such a disaster will require a little longer time than in the movie -- decades rather than weeks.

Finally saw a promo for this. (A gas price sign being raised to $7, an angry mob pulling the driver from a tanker truck and beating him up, etc.) Yeah, it will probably be cheesy, but I bet it will be more effective than "The End of Suburbia." I have friends who are forever opposed to nuclear power because they saw "The Day After" (a cheesy flick about nuclear war).

I bet we'll get a ton of new visitors after this movie airs.

The significance of this movie as to really ceoming educated about PO and the reasons behind it which are geology/a bell curve will be ZERO. Whenever the hot topic which is in the public agenda can be marketed and made a movie it is. Do you all remember all of those TV movies in the early 90s about being a closet homosexual? I think Jim Carrey did a major one called Doing Time on Maple Drive which aired on the network broadcast fox stations. He did get a few reviews and press for a day or so but the real issue of gay rights and discrimination were never looked at.

This movie will be the same. Right now many people who are clueless about PO are worried about high gas prices. They have had to cut out luxury activities or if they are lower income they have cut out some required things to make ends meet. What a better way to prey on those fears than make a movie about it?
I'll watch this thing just to see what they did with it but my expectation is very low. All they are likely to show will be angry motorists and abandoned vehciles with maybe a few riots.

The grocery store shelves will be fully stocked in the film and the power grid will be 100% opperational even with limited ability to make repairs and maintain things. The errors of representation of the reality will number high but I am curious to see how they plan to scare the Jow that is aloof to PO.

Any of our British friends remember this? Threads
Did the public view this as "cheesy"? I though it was way better than The Day After.

Uhmm.... forgot about this... crap! Meanwhile, tensions in the Middle East are increasing and when America intervenes in Iran the British authorities issue futile pleas for calm around the country. The trouble escalates into nuclear war and the world is devastated, transmuted into a broken, barren, nightmarish landscape where everything humanity relies upon, from sunlight to food supplies, can no longer be taken for granted.

The plot so far...

Hurricane wipes out 10% of US oil production through the Gulf of Mexico. Crisis hits.
We get Saudis to ship an extra 1 million bpd of oil to the USA. A few weeks later militants take 300 american oil workers hostage at a mall in Saudi Arabia. 107 killed before situation ends.
The USA sends 5,000 troops to Saudi Arabia to protect oil infrastructure.

Good movie so far.

The crisis starts in September 2005. By Xmas 2005 oil is at $150 per barrel.

The entire POV of the movie is like something on the History Channel where they are looking back and reviewing what happened from a historical perspective.
