My user name is the concatenation of my first and middle names.

Because my father's name is also John (different middle name) and my son's name will be John too (different middle name also), family members call me "John Markos."

However, in grade school, I was called Nhoj, which, you might notice, is John backwards.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('bobcousins', 'I') thought this was going to be a serious website about a very important issue!

Is it too late to change?
How about you give me your serious avatar and I'll give you my frivolous one? 'What's up, doc?' Porky is even better: 'a-bleet a-bleet a-bleet a-that's all folks'

I added the avatar later to try to restore balance. Bugs is an excellent role model. Unlike me, he tackles any problem thrown at him with wit and enthusiasm, is never fazed, and always triumphs in the end. Just what we need for Peak Oil.
It's all downhill from here

it's onomatopoeia

I was reading Norse mythology at the time, and thought I'd use one of Odin's names since he seemed like a pretty cool customer. Bolverk was my first choice, but since that means "worker of evil", I went with Grimnir instead ("cloaked one"). Not that I have an awesome secret identity or anything.

My name is a nickname that some of my friends have given me because I'm built like Vin Diesel but not as stupid or as bald; I also have a strong distaste for our government and the authority that it represents because it's obviously not "of the people by the people and for the people" anymore.

I was going to pick "Maynard" because I'm a huge TOOL fan but I thought would be lame to kind of idiolize the lead singer.......kind of misses the point of their whole philosophy.

Laurasia is the name of an ancient continent comprising present-day Europe, Asia & North America - all joined together. It has a nice sound, and the symbolism in these chaotic times is one of the reasons I chose it.

I have three 8, 5 and 2 and have been feeling the same way. Maybe we should start a thread. "How do you prepare your kids for this?" "How do you stay optimistic about their future?"

That's a good idea ...

It's the place I've lived most of my life. As youths we, the underclass from the East Bay, were called East Bay Grease. Tower of Power, also from the East Bay, produced an album named after us. There is a book about us entitled East Bay Grease written by a college prof who once was a kid who lived a two houses away from me.

So I am,

I just used my own name. Not very imaginative. Probably not a good idea these days. If I don't watch what I say my name could end up on lists or databases of "bad guys".

But using a nickname is no protection. The US and some other countries have passed laws allowing them to grab server logfiles and identify users. I don't even know where PO's servers are located.

Good idea. Maybe I will change my name to Gondwana or Rodinia. Which do you think sounds more macho? Or maybe I should go for Pangea: Global Supercontinent.

Not meaning to make fun of your choice :P

Name origin

Unread postby sparkylab » Wed 08 Jun 2005, 05:16:17

From an episode of Pinky and the Brain (a kids cartoon made for adults). Essentially, two lab mice - one of which sounds like Orson Welles and is bent on taking over the world - each week would hatch a bizarre plan to do just that. The name is taken from an episode when the brain (the clever mouse) for some reason that now escapes me - tries to take over the world via baseball announcing. Sparkylab is a shortened form of Sparky LaBraina - a character puporting to be the worlds foremost baseball mind.

It was the first name I came up with when prompted from a chatroom/message board years ago, and never had any need to change it.

if its not busted .....

Doly is my actual name. Well, actually, the nickname I've told everybody to call me. It's short for my "real" name, Dolores, and it doesn't have the same horrible meaning.

Many people misspell it as "Dolly". I have two reasons to refuse to spell it like that:
1) LL in Spanish has a different sound from L. Dolly would be pronounced something like Doyee.
2) I refuse to have the same name as a cloned sheep. I'm unique!

Started using this name when playing Quake 1 online many years ago. It's actually a voodun diety, I suspect it was originally implanted in my brain from one of the Jack Flanders adventures (radio drama - highly, highly recommended), where one of the characters is found shouting/moaning it over and over. Since then it's just become my online identity wherever I go, other than a few boards I frequent where I don't want to be so easily tracked...

If you Google for
define: dolly
you will find some horrible meanings:
-childish look popular in 1960's, consisted of little girl dresses and jackets, "mary jane" shoes and little make-up.

"No definitions were found for doly" :o

You are smart to go with the one-L spelling.

Well, I do like plants, but mainly I want to learn more about them. You see, animals are easy to figure out in tough times, bugs are not too hard, some are poison but they're fairly easy to figure out, but plants take some learning. Nettles are sting-y but apparently very good for you, other plants and fruits can taste OK or even good but poison you. So, I need to learn about plants. And they're interesting anyway.
