Seems my oldest (8 years) wants to be a vegetarian. This in and of itself doesnt bother me. She can be carnivore, omnivore or herbivore far as I care.
What bothers me is she continues to ask. Every time I grill, which is about once a week in the summer and twice a month in the winter, she brings it up.
"Can I be a vegetarion?"
"No."
"Can I be a vegetarian?"
"No."

Over and over. Once a week in the summer, twice a month in the winter. The repetition gets old.

What's the problem? Throw a potatoe, maybe a veggie shishkabob on the grill for her. Save ya money.

She'll grow out of it. I was a vegetarian for 6 years.

My biggest concern is meeting the nutrinional requirements for an 8 year old. Its one thing to say "I'm not eating meat!" and quite another to say "I'm going to live a healthy lifestyle without eating meat".
Its easy to not eat meat and animal products. Its not so easy to do it in a healthy way.
Which means it takes proper meal preperation and planning. And quite frankly, in a busy household with 3 kids I dont have the time nor motivation to cook 2 meals everytime I go to cook.

I've told her once shes old enough to handle the responsibility, she can eat whatever she chooses. But I wont have her eating unhealthy simply for the sake of not eating meat.

She can have her pinto beans, potato, and corn. Cook that up for her, and have your 1.5" T-bone steak, a side of crawdad, some mashed potatos with turkey gravy, and corn on the cob soaked in butter. For dessert, have a 3 scoop dish of ice cream, while her dessert would be a Ceaser's Salad. I bet her vegetarinism lastl less than a month. Remind her that eggs, cheese, milk, ice cream, sour cream, and cottage cheese are all byproducts from animals, and as a vegetarian, it is against her moral standards. I bet the vegetarian craze will end probably in a week if you serve her "No Animal" meals for the entire duration, while gluttining yourself on saturated fats while making it painfully obvious that you are enjoying it. Have fun

Might want to make that a garden salad. Ceasar Salad dressing has eggs and anchovy paste in it. In all fairness a bannana might make a more appropriate desert.

The problem with saying no is that the more you say no, the more intriguing the idea will become.

Does she like spinich, brussel sprouts, asparagus, radishes, broccoli, mushrooms, . . . .
In other words all those vegetables that kids generally don't like. If she like these, then you
have a problem. If not, then tell her that she has to eat all these things to get the required nutrition.

How hard is it to really throw together nutritionally complete salads with lots of fresh vegetables?
Maybe others can give advice on how to do this.

ArimoDave

PS Withholding protien from her diet will make it easier to control her mind. That may come in handy when she reaches 14. :)

Its funny you mention that! We went through this about a year ago. Thats exactly what I did. She brought it up at beakfast over cereal. I fully agreed, and began plotting. I couldnt openly fight the issue, one of those "Parents dont want it so I do" issues. I needed tact.
Lunch came around.... Bingo. Time to strike. Off to McD's.
She was pretty disappointed when she couldnt have a cheeseburger, hamburger or chicken. Nope, just salad.

Took the wind out of her sails pretty damned fast. Score one for Dad. :-D

Unfortunately she keeps bringing it up. :(

I havent said no, not once.
I've simply informed her thats a decision she will have to make when shes both mature enough to fully handle the responsiblity, and mature enough to handle it on her own.

Although, the idea of seeing her face when a plate of lima beans, brussel sprouts and lettuce gets set in front of her and everyone else gets salad (With dressing!), ribs, steaks and shrimp would be piceless.

Does she wear makeup? That is a animal byproduct. Does she have any leather products? That is an animal byproduct. Jello? The list goes on. If her drive is a moral issue it will be very hard for her to to live in this society free from guilt. If her drive is nutrition then... I guess it is possible but almost every vegeitarian I have known has relapsed due to health problems.

"Wow your looking so good, what did you do?'

"I started eating meat again."

I'm not stating it's impossible, just hard. But a lot of us will be in that boat soon. As far as development... I didn't see any worse for the wear, but most got into drugs as well. 8O

Complete protein for vegetarians: any sort of animal protein is complete. Includes milk, eggs, grasshoppers, etc. Soy products including tofu also contain complete proteins.

Otherwise need a grain plus a nut or legume. E.g.
peanut butter sandwich.
Beans and rice
black eye peas and cornbread.

Other than protein, vegetarian diet doesn't tend to have nutritional deficiencies. Vegans who strenously avoid all milk and egg products also run short of vitamin b12 and can take it as a vitamin supplement.

My kids all wanted to become vegitarians after seeing the movie 'Babe' about the cute little talking piglet. The smell of sizzling bacon soon 'cured' them of it.

Smallpoxgirl,

I always heard Niacin was a big problem as it is an amino acid not producable by humans and not provided by anything vegatable. But you did it so tell me I'm wrong.

Daculling:

My understanding is that mushrooms contain niacin. I'm not sure which variaties contain
the highest concentrations. To me, a mushroom is a mushroom. I started eating more of
these in an effort to reduce cholesterol levels (LDL). My nutitionist suggested that I try to
increase niacin intake, since niacin is often used to treat high cholesterol.

I'm sure there are other vegetables, possibly beans and nuts, that contain sufficient levels of niacin.

"Niacin (also known as nicotinic acid, nicotinamide, niacinamide, vitamin B-3) is a B vitamin that is important in the normal functioning of the nervous system. Its commercial source is synthetic, and it may also be found in liver, yeast, meat, legumes, and whole cereals. It is typically vegan."

SERIOUSLY:

Turn a negative into a posative...Become a vegitarian with her!

Let her teach you a few things!!! (ask her...can you eat fish? crab? chicken? eggs? cheese?) there are many "forms" of vegitarian, and you may just be able to out-cook her :)

How about crab stuffed grilled Salmon?

Or How about veggie chow mein?

Or a grilled yellow-fin tuna ceasar salad!

A wild fruit plate....you can do this!!! do it!

I repeat myself...turn a negative into a posative.
