$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')n Oklahoma lawmaker is convinced that some food coming into his state contains portions of human fetuses.

According to the KGMG talk radio, state Sen. Ralph Shortey (R) has filed a bill that bans foods or products using aborted human fetuses.

Is he referring to the Nitrogen Cycle ? All decomposed organics eventually make their way to our dinner plates one way or another.

I know this is in jest, but the reality is not far behind. There is a poll at the end where you pick the way you want to die. I picked the bus, but a lot of people chose to be shot in the stomach. Yuck.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 's')o the question is: How do we want to do this?" Cambridge University ecologist Dr. Edwin Peters said. "Do we want to give everyone a number and implement a death lottery system? Incinerate the nation's children? Kill off an entire race of people? Give everyone a shotgun and let them sort it out themselves?"

"Completely up to you," he added, explaining he and his colleagues were "open to whatever."

Cheers Narz, best laugh I've had in a while- made so much funnier remembering various acrimonious threads and angry exchanges that discussed basically every sentence in that 'article'!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'I')t really is a shame the COC forbids discussions of such matters. It could have led to an adult discussion of appropriate drug use[edit], at least a more robust discussion on resource depletion and planetary limits. Instead we have skirted real issues and this site has turned into a pseudo intellectual exercise on world financial prognostication.

It seems to me to be more about how to make money.

Actually, this is a great and serious piece, worthy of serious discussion.

The poll actually contains the default choice most of us take - by social pressure. When we're really sick, we're subjected to medical experiments via the "practice of medicine". Whether successful or not, the bill (a horrendous burden on society regardless of who actually pays) is paid.

I'd like (seriously) to add a sixth choice to the poll:

Have the right and the method to choose my time and method at MY discretion. If medicine looks like a poor bet, I'd like the CHOICE to do myself AND society a favor and choose a quick, simple, and hopefully relatively painless death. A.K.A. via Dr. Kevorkian technique.

....

Of course, this won't happen, as it would put a SERIOUS dent in the all-powerful medical establishment money machine. It would also greatly offend many religious types who believe they should control others' destiny -- in the name of "some mainstream religion".

(So, did I just violate a pile of COC rules by trying to seriously discuss this?)
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

No mainstream religion requires heroic measures to sustain life. And that goes all the way down to something as trivial as simple antibiotics. You have the right to say "no". You have the right to NOT call 911. You have the right to fire any doctor you do not like for any reason or no reason at all.

If you do not wish to participate in the elderly / hospital / drug routine, you do not have to. You will not live as long. If that is acceptable, and is your preference, you do not need anyone's consent to make it so.

Modern medicine's failing is that it measures and classifies its success almost strictly based upon survival duration after event metrics. When you stomp on that metric, they get confused, and you need to be absolutely blunt about your intentions and desires; but if you are clear, generally they are smart enough to understand after a brief period of disorientation.

Sorry agent but the only way your statement is true is if you are able to live off the grid in isolation. If you are elderly you can sign a DNR at the hospital and try to go out peacefully, but unless you pass quickly your well meaning relatives or legal guardians can petition the court for Medical Power of Attorney and over rule your choice. It happens more often than you can imagine, just ask any medical practitioner who works with elderly patients in a hospital setting.

What it really boils down too is if you keep your mental facilities functioning at a high level. Nearly everyone, though there are a few exceptions, declines as they get close to end of life. The courts recognize that fact and the 'safe' choice to make is to give medical power of attorney to someone who clearly has all of their mental facilities in tact. Even families where it is discussed years in advance between the members of the family often struggle with end of life DNR type decisions. A shockingly high percentage of adults can't accept the fact that life ends at some point.

Part of a complete off grid 'best of' would have to be one's own poppy field, for purely medical reasons as referenced.

We had to kill the people to save the people.

Are we sure this is satire?

I saw no satire in the Onion piece.

Well, except, perhaps, that humanity has the ability to even consider the ideas.

I personally want me and mine to live a long and happy life.

I see no reason to off any of us for the greater benefit of humanity.

I don't expect anyone else to feel differently.

I see no answer to the unfolding train wreck.

P.S.

For complete irony, as I write this there is an intermittent add in the lower left corner for some kind of dating service.

Sex sells.
