List Your Top Peak Oil Sites (besides #1 peakoil.com)

Unread postby OilsNotWell » Sun 29 May 2005, 20:47:17

Due to the undoubtedly greatly increased number of guests that will be visiting this site from the recent mass media interest, I thought it might be helpful to list a few links that may be useful, and links for which even those not-so-new may find useful. I've tried to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak... I've tried to stick with basic peak oil sites, and haven't listed any alternative energy, investment-related, etc sites...

While I do realize this site does have a link list, it is a bit cumbersome, and perhaps others can add more here that are of a timely nature...

Thanks for the mention.

FTD / FoF - when you say the rumours of your demise (created by you !) are greatly exagerrated do you mean that FTD still lives ? Or do you mean you've just changed homes to Furl ?

I initially meant to kill in favor of going to full Furl mode. Then I found that I could incorporate FURL feeds directly on the website, plus I learned a little more about CSS and HTML in the process.

If you just want the links, I would encourage you to just go staight to the my Furl archive.

Yeah FTD, I thought you had closed up shop for good! That would have sucked...this community is doing too well to lose one of its founding and important members.

I go here to po.com, to FTD, EB, and a few others for my daily reading/learning...so, I'm glad to hear you're still a part of things, FTD. The new design is really cool too.

(and we over at The Oil Drum as always thank FTD, the folks here at PO.com, and all of this community for the mentions and links...it all matters folks. Keep up the community, the effort and the communication! )

Idea: a forum for PO journalists, bloggers, etc..

Since a number of PO news hounds have found this forum, I wonder if it might be useful to keep it as a place for us to exchange ideas? We are communicating indirectly by reading each other's blogs and websites, but a forum like this might be very helpful.

What do you think?

I second Bart's idea of keeping this thread open for a place to toss around some ideas - sometimes some coordinated information dissemination could come in handy.

(I suspect most of us read EB anyway - but it doesn't lend itself to conversations)

Sometimes checking the financial sites related to oil and other resources can be informative in gathering relevant information on the industry...as well as understanding the state of the economy by checking general financial sites. oh my god, i knew the # sites was multiplying but this is scary. How does anyone get any work done? I don't anyway, but somebody must :P
Can anyone remember news before the web? God it was lame, and Jeez, We rock.

Its great to have many windows on the ocean of content out there, format diversity spreads the msg. But as I mentioned on another thread, i think there needs to be an easier way for all these sites to republish same content.
This isn't suggesting any are redundant, just that theres alot of repeat work happening, reentering stories already 'borrowed' elsewhere, essentially wasting ppls time. And in 3, 6, or 18 months, ppl are going to discover their families/bosses want them back, and sites will stagnate and disappear. If we could share the workload better, we'll all be able to do a better job for longer, spend more time checking/improving/searching for content instead of just entering it.

Imagine a single newswire that authorised users (anybody who asks nicely, behaves ok) visit to enter stories they've found and source other news. When see story u like (obviously including the ones you've added), tick a box to have that story fed to your site, on RSS feed prob easiest but could be via carefully formatted email.

Could have a points/reward system for most-added & most-used stories to highlight freeloaders or low quality sources, or not, i don't care myself.
Could have a 'used by' field to show which sites have already used/displayed that story and so reduce redundancy in closely allied sites.
Would require a programmer to make the engine, which i'm not even remotely, but surely couldn't be too hard? (be interested in opinions even just on 'could it be done').

I can't see any downside to doing this except effort of making the engine - from then on everybody saves time, gets easier access to more news and has an instant view of coverage by peers.

I actually quite like the present situation as it is quite the improvement over the olgarchic and corrupted and compromised mass media situation currently...the concentration of news power into about 5 giant corporations should frighten the hell out of anyone who believes in a free press. See the links below about how bloggers are literally re-defining journalism before our eyes...

This is citizen journalism as it was meant to be be!!!!!! De-centralization means they cannot shut it down entirely, it is a MUCH stronger defense against CORRUPTION, and it's JUST LIKE the internet itself...designed to withstand attack... It also has the benefit of increasing truth and accuracy and detail along the way by being able to be discussed, analyzed, dissected, rejected, etc..The Rather story was just a warm-up...

There can be no freedom without freedom of speech, and of the press.

But free press is under attack. Journalists are being TARGETED AND KILLED in Iraq they say. The mass media is not addressing people's primary need for truthful reporting on issues that a blind man could see.
(Want to know how ABSURD the media situation is? See this link about how a Clear Channel station attacked ITSELF to pretend it was a revolutionary radio station..

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')learChannel is its own worst critic:
It's no fun being a giant, continent-spanning conglomerate -- just ask ClearChannel, the U.S. radio behemoth. They get beaten up regularly because they own so many radio stations, and that gives them a lot of clout when it comes to what music gets played, and even what kinds of bands get to tour. This irritates music fans, of course, and many independent radio stations make it a point to take jabs at the company whenever possible -- including a new underground "pirate" radio station called Radio Free Ohio, based in Akron, which has been loudly insulting Clear Channel with broadcasts that "bleed" into nearby channels owned by the company. Unfortunately for ClearChannel, the enterprising folks at another station called WOXY took a look at who set up the pirate station's website, and found it was apparently owned by none other than ClearChannel itself. Nice try, guys.

Globe and Mail

The funny part is not only did this illustrate the utter duplicity and sheer absurdity of total media domination, it INCORRECTLY mentioned that another radio station took them down, but it was THE BLOGGERS ON THE RADIO STATION SITE that did it. I watched it happen in real time. It was unbelievable and hilarious at the same time!!!

This should not surprise anyone.

Case in point, at home journalists are getting "knocks on doors"....

At 5:55 p.m. last night, Monday, May 23rd, in San Antonio, Texas, Agent Carlos Salazar of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, accompanied by a female agent who failed to identify herself, made a surprise visit to the home of Narco News journalist Bill Conroy, a reporter, and author of the online book Borderline Security, who has broken a string of stories about embarrassing and worrisome problems inside Salazar’s agency.

on liam's idea

Unread postby adam » Tue 31 May 2005, 22:42:07

on liam's idea - this is something energybulletin eds talked about a couple of weeks ago.

it's certainly worth putting out there, this idea for a central, fairly content neutral website. (call it energy associated media - eam for now perhaps) the eam site itself would not be intended to be used as a public portal. you would need to log in to view any content stored on it. and we would only encourage admins of other peak oil news websites to do so.

the site would need editors to make sure the content is formatted correctly, and they might remove the odd articles which are completely out of scope or defamatory or otherwise illegal. but for the most part it would be an almost-anything-goes type of arrangement as far as posting articles. the idea is to create a big pool of articles to pick and choose from.

site admins would log into the site and create their own customised rss feeds by clicking an 'add to my feed' button next to wanted articles. each rss feed would be unique to each username, for instance
http://www.energyassoc.org/?adam.rss

instead of adding articles to energybulletin.net, we would add them to this new site and choose them and other articles uploaded by others to be added to our rss feed.

would we store the full text, or just links to original articles? presumably the latter I think. some sites should maintain their own publishing system for full text and original articles. they or others could then place a reference to it on the eam site.

it would seem this method would save us time in the long run and help avoid that stagnation liam is rightly worried about. it would have some disadvantages too perhaps including that if the site went down for any extended period it would stuff up several sites...

but definately something to consider.
