Census Bureau "startled" by America's 100 million poor

What's on your mind?
General interest discussions, not necessarily related to depletion.

My God man, without the surveyor and the lessor mortal known as the civil engineer, the USA's infrastructure would go to hell in a hand-basket. When a turd is flushed from your throne room and ends up in the sewer plant you can give thanks that the surveyor made it happen. When you happily motor across a bridge or drive through a tunnel, you can rest assured that the brilliant brainpower of the surveyor made that happen as well.

Statues should be erects to us in every city. We are practically national heroes. What we do is not for mere money at the tax-payers expense, we make the world the beautiful place that it is. When I get up and go to work, the world is blessed by my mere presence. So bow down and keep those government contracts coming or you will be the worse off for not doing so.

It's only startling if you haven't been paying attention to the simple math:

Cheap housing $4000/year
15000 miles driving. $5000/year
Very efficient energy bill $1500 per year.

Oops! You've already used up your $10500 poverty wages for the year! Better skip the car!

Cheap housing $4000.
food, clothing, medical, all else $5000.
Very efficient energy bill $1500.

That's better!

The truth is, we don't have very much real poverty in this country, when measured against the rest of the world. Our "bottom dwellers" eat, enjoy some medical care, almost certainly have a cell phone, have daily access to a computer, very possibly have a car, or access to a ride, a warm bed, air conditioning, clean clothes, and running water.

To find true poverty in America you have to count the homeless, the crack house occupants, rural slums, and downtown mission refugees found in all American cities. The count is still very small, in comparison.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

Living as simply as possible is a good goal no matter how much money you make. That and staying out of debt to the extent that its possible, is also a good goal. If people would follow these simple metrics, becoming homeless would be a lot less of a risk.

I am only able to suppress worker's rights to a limited extent for now but hope springs eternal that I can expand that part of my business.

Holding a surveying degree and working with and for civil engineers for decades I just love that line.
Better watch out Cog we are being replaced with a kid holding a magic wand/GPS unit that knows nothing about real surveying. Even the dozers and motor graders have GPS and the plans downloaded to their computers and know where they are to the cm and how deep to dig from there.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Cloud9', 'W')hy didn't bankers and union bosses make the list?

Perhaps because they are not moochers but thieves and robber barons, a much more odious class. :x

As I remind my party chiefs on an almost daily basis, technology is not a substitute for judgment and common sense. Frequently I need to remind those behind the computer screen civil engineers of the same thing.

What you get done last night?
nothin!!#$%@
what happened?
We set in and ran the eight inch over to the existing line like the plan said and when we got to the existing line it was a ten inch instead. No ten inch fittings at three AM. Pull the box ,fill the @#*&^% hole and try again in three days after we notify all the stores about the water being out again.
Well line up all the usual suspects for another night including two cops.

Great stuff but it won't take 160psi when the inspector comes back for the pressure test. It's not being there every minute it's knowing when to look and what to look for. :)

   WTH I'm still laughing at this, even if things really go to shit you'll probably still have some form of police, nurse, and teacher "mooches" but I doubt there will be much call for new roads or sewers in a world gone to shit. Cogs gonna be in the Chicago suburbs eating grass thinking about how worthless the people who surrond him are....... Maybe he can get a job filling sandbags?

Couldn't agree more. A couple of years ago I had a manager that was somewhat disagreeable to a lot of us and I realized how tied to my job I was because of my debt. That manager has moved on and so has a good share of my debt (still have a ways to go). Having less debt is probably the best thing I've ever done in my life from both a personal happiness and a preparedness standpoint.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('gollum', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pretorian', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Cog', 'T')he last thing the mooch class wants, is the destruction of the current system, which provides their superior and free gravy courtesy of the private sector.

Mooch class:

Federal employees
Local cops
Local fire department
City and state and county employees
Teachers
Academia
Government contractors
UAW
Retired government workers at all levels

I thought you are or were a .gov contractor? Now it does makes sense

Cog is on the government tit????????? WTF

It's all starting to make sense. Gotta get all those "mooch" teachers and other direct public servants off the gov't tit to free up gov't money for enriching private contractors!

Ya just gotta laugh

[smilie=5baby.gif]
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.
