On another question : I still am struggling with why publicizing PO is a good thing. If widespread publicity unto understanding is able to steer a global stabilization to our population and resource growth (e.g. drop or make it 0 growth) for a slow die-off, I can understand. However, if such a publicity has little effect to stave a hard crash, what's the use?

Agree that peak oil will likely make climate change worse, not better. Even if we don't succumb to the dark side (coal), other countries will. Particularly China, which has large coal deposits. Unfortunately, a lot of it is nasty - soft, dirty brown coal, contaminated with arsenic and the like. Very polluting. They already burn so much of it that the resulting acid rain is killing their crops.

Then there's heavy, sour crude. No one wants it now, because it's harder to refine and more polluting, but when sweet, light crude is $100 a barrel, people will likely be willing to overlook a few emissions problems.

It's really alarming how fast the climate is changing. I always thought climate change was gradual, but things are changing pretty fast now. Perhaps not all due to human causes, but still - it makes planning for the future difficult.

Peak Oil only got on the list because one of the www.powerswitch.org.uk members emailed the BBC editor a few weeks ago. We've circulated all the powerswitch members, I hope they all vote. I think this is another indication that the media are becoming attuned to the subject.
