$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pretorian', 'H')ow come that I knew that no one will be able to refute anything that i said?

In all seriousness Pretorian, I can't really refute what you have said. I worked as a high school teacher in Jersey City and Newark, NJ from 1997-2008. During that time, I saw (to perfectly blunt) more stereotypes than a KKK rally. I taught kids who were gang members, drug dealers, parents in jail, and were homicidaly violent. I should also add that the administration seemed to think that we were in a movie like Dangerous Minds or Freedom Writers and that you had to be a missionary on top of being a teacher. I got so burned out that I decided that I really needed to change careers. So maybe it is hard to argue with your statements.

That being said, there are a few things I should mention:
I come from a family with an abusive alcoholic father. Going to school in the 1970s, you didn't talk about what was going on at home, so I would act out in class constantly. I did everything I could to get kicked out of class and spent most of the first grade on the bench in front of the principals office (of course no one knew why). If you know anything about Newark, you know that the city is as follows: East Ward (Portuguese with a lot of Italians when I was growing up); South and Central Wards (Black), and North Ward (Hispanic with an Italian enclave that's there to this day). It was decided to send me to school uptown, since it was figured that the hard ass black teachers could handle me. They were right. These teachers made sure I worked and if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have been where I am today. I should also note that I came from a really blue collar neighborhood and I was marked since I was a shy kid who liked to read. I got picked on a lot and jumped a few times by the white kids. I actually got along better with the black and Peurto Rican kids uptown. I never got jumped by them either.

Next thing that I want to mention is that when I lived in Carlisle, PA, I subbed in a few different districs in the area and couldn't believe that some of the kids out there in these small white-bread towns were dealing with some of the same issues as kids in the inner-city. I'm not talking about white kids who imitate homies in the 'hood. I'm talikng about having the exact same issues. They also wanted to keep everything hidden in this area and not acknowledge some of the problems they were facing (conversely, they were great at turning little issues and blowing them up into enormous problems). One place, which we will call Big Spring Area School District in Newville, PA was full of rednecks who displayed more sterotypes than a monster truck rally. So let's not pretend it's just the inner city kids who have issues.

Modern American Slavery is trying to be imported here too

We have conservative governments destroying unions, trying to introduce individual work contracts, watering down our health care system, by subsidising the rich to get private health insurance.
We have Mackas union busting and trying to introduce lower wages
Major obstacle here is you can get the Unemployment benefits to live on, as a back up so you can tell Mackas to get stuffed, in the US you don't have that option.
I lived in a high wage zero unemployment mining town a few years back KFC would close down regularly because they couldn't get people to work for rubbish wages.

Everyone has issues. The difference is in quantity and magnitude of those, as well as in your personal ability and desire to pay for/deal with all of that.

You're right on that point. As I told some of my former co-workers, I never got cursed at or threatened by a redneck in rural PA, while in the inner-city it was a regular occurrence.

I can see your point as I 've seen the evidence for it personally. Given my experiences, however, I can't really throw terms like "groid" and other similar words around.

Well, how else would you name their race? Black? But there are at least 3, possibly 4 races with black skin. The only possible alternative is " Congoid".

UPDATE on the original hiring day post:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')his is what the US economy has been reduced to: McDonalds reports that as part of its employment event to hire 50,000 minimum wage, part-time (mostly) workers, subsequently raised to 62,000 it received a whopping 1 million applications, or a Tim Geithner jealousy inducing 6.2% hit rate (h/t X. Kurt. OSis). Alas, the US economy is now so pathetic that the bulk of the population will settle for anything. Literally anything. And the saddest part: over 938,000 applicants were turned away. Here's hoping to Burger King needs a few million janitors in the immediate future too. And yes, aside from reality, things in America are really recovering quite nicely.
http://www.zerohedge.com/article/mcdonalds-hires-62000-turns-away-over-938000-applicants-minimum-wage-part-time-jobs

Oh wow that's bad.. ONE MILLION applications for the 50,000 jobs. 8O 8O

That's twenty applicants per one part time job. I knew this was going to happen.. it's just cruel to do a stunt like this, an advertised "National Hiring Day" in an economy this bad -- they were bound to get swamped wtih applicants, so many are so desperate out there.

Mcdonalds doesn't pay enough for a new car.

Believe it or not, a lot of skilled (former) professionals are out of work, desperate, and because they actually do have a work ethic, will take ANY job.

From another forum:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')simov wrote..
My mother will be 60 this year. Mechanical engineering degree, decades of experience in nuclear plants, welding and in quality control. TONS of certifications.

Hasn't been able to find a job, went back to school to learn to do computer aided design... couldn't find a job. Sold three houses they owned to support themselves and pay the mortgage my dad's mother left them with on the house they decided to live in. (Big mistake - they should have sold it and moved into one that was paid off.)

Has now lost her house and is moving into my basement. High likelihood of losing pretty much everything they own because we don't have room to store it and can't afford storage buildings to keep it in.

Did manage to get a job at mcdonalds this past week. Love this "recovery."

McDonalds is 'lovin' it'. They get to choose the top 2% of applicants in this depressed economy. 5 years ago, all they got were teens and the bottom of the barrel. Not any more.

What kind of question is that.. millions and millions are jobless in this country, they're desperate for work to pay for rent and food and, you know, survive and all that?

Not that 18 hours a week at McDonalds will get the lucky few very far.. not enough money there to even pay any bills.

That's the untold story with this recession / depression -- age discrimination. That age range is getting to be dangerous.. Republicans want to keep raising retirement age and Medicare eligibility, while there are more 22 year old fresh college grads than new jobs. So stuck in the middle are the gray hairs.. too "young" to retire, but too old to get hired.

That’s a great one, “I went to work at McDonalds so I could buy some fancy clothes!”… Har... Har..!

Americans got so fat that the fat rolls don't let them see properly. A new car does not have to be " newly made" . It might be new for you.

Yeah, yeah... "Asimov wrote.."

Surely an elderly Russian woman with an attitude ( Missis " I got the mechanical engineering degree " with tons of certifications) is a top-notch choice for a fast food joint. crème de la crème, aha.

Also, it is very common for Russians to live with their parents, as sending parents to the nursing homes is no different from sending kids to orphanages, also because buying a new property in Russia is hardly possible without selling your parent's apartment or house.

Well that is their problem . BillS. BillS. BillS. Everyone thinks they are entitled to a separate house and a personal ( new, huh) transportation and means to maintain that all, like if they are masters of sorts. Everyone somehow conveniently forgot who they really are --- landless yokels that have nothing to do. Landless yokels do not get to own houses and cars, at least not for a very long time.
Come visit us on Earth, and you will see that a Mcjob in USA is in fact one of the best jobs on the planet.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pretorian', ' ')Also, it is very common for Russians to live with their parents...
This is not unusual, but not very typical either. Really old people, that need to be looked after, do normally leave with their children or relatives.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '.').. sending parents to the nursing homes is no different from sending kids to orphanages,..
This is true. This is viewed as despicable although this does happen.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '.')..also because buying a new property in Russia is hardly possible without selling your parent's apartment or house.
This is wrong. Your info source is probably very outdated. It is quite possible to buy a new property without selling your parent's house or apartment, and even without any other assistance from your parents.

It seems from Asimov's post that the sources of their housing problems were, to a substantial extent, questionable and risky financial decisions, such as selling the house that was paid off.

Re: McDonalds overwhelmed on national hiring day, part time

Postby Roy » Sun 01 May 2011, 07:21:36

That post was from the tickerforum.

The reason I posted it, like Six noted, was to point out that once you hit 50 in this country, and if you work for some company, you are subject to dismissal, (often due to (potentially high health-care costs compared to younger worker). I've seen it in executive level corporate meetings, where decisions were made not based on an employee's work ethic, skill, dedication or experience. Instead the decision was made to let go several highly skilled and dedicated employees in their mid-50's due to health care costs and their high salaries which they achieved by staying with the same company for 20+ years and doing a good job. The decision makers figured they could get a younger person for half the cost, no matter the skill level or reduction in quality that would ensue from the unskilled worker.

Loyalty means nothing. With the retirement age going up, the number of jobs going down, and the cost of healthcare skyrocketing, I don't see much of a future for people in their 50's and 60's in the modern service economy.

It's all about the bottom line in this country. The United States of Mammon.
