General discussions of the systemic, societal and civilisational effects of depletion.

A clarification of the clarification

The clarification of the clarification, direct from A.M. Samsam Bakhtiari himself

I need to apologise to the forum for my role in spreading a strange morass of misinformation. I also apologise to Manub, who was right after all.

Here is an email I received from A.M. Samsam Bakhtiari himself: I think it is self-explanatory:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')hank you for your kind attention and heart-warming
email, and for having taken trouble to fax IRI embassy
!
It is all very kind of you, and I really appreciate it
!
But allow me to clarify one point in order to avoid
any misunderstanding: it is not the IRI authorities
which stopped me from going to Lisbon, but the
Portuguese consular authorities who denied me a visa
(after having been given all necessary guarantees by
ASPO oficers) and as I have four 'Schengen' visas and
a British visa in my passport it is clear I will not
remain there.
In any instance, I am extremely glad to have such
wonderful friends in the UK and will definitely call
you in case I would come there any time soon (although
presently I doubt it very much)...
With my very best regards and best wishes,
A.M. Samsam Bakhtiari

So it was the Portugese after all. As an EU citizen it comes as rather an unpleasant surprise to find EU countries banning perfectly respectable people from attending conferences. I find that bizarre.

Finally, I also phoned the Iranian embassy to retract my earlier complaint (it's grovelling all round for me today!!). I have to say that the Iranian embassy in London who I have now spoken to 3 times, have been extremely nice and diplomatic about the whole thing. I was very impressed.

This is probably some anti-immigration law in Portugal that prevents him to obtain, many countries in EU have such ..

Visa troubles are common, people from Russia or Ukraine have to wait for half year to get visa here (if they are allowed) and I have to wait 3 months and pray to be given visit visa to USA (despite having relatives in USA and living in EU country).

Guess you could start sending letter to Portugal. With Shengen visa, he can travel freely across continent, even to Portugal - unless authorities there catch him..

As I said he should try it in another Schengen country, I can't imagine that he can't get a normal visa from somewhere, with his reputation. Maybe somebody has connections to authorities in a EU country? If for example a mayor of a city, however small, of a EU-Schengen-country would invite him I can't imagine not getting a visa...

I'm just back tonight from Lisbon. There was in fact no passport check whatever at Lisbon airport; passports were checked at Schiphol airport (Amsterdam) upon transfer but this check was not flight specific as those checked could have been boarding any number of flights within Schengen zone.

One other option would have been to fly to the nearest EU country for which a visa was possesed and simply take a train from there to Lisbon. With the exception of Eurostar (Channel Tunnel) link between UK and France there seem to be no passport checks on trains between member countries. I've crossed border numerous times on train between Germany and Austria and there have never been passport checks.

A.M. Samsam Bakhtiari has enough intelligence not to get caught as an Iranian traveling without a valid passport in this day and age! *grin*

I agree, dodging the visa checks might work for students etc travelling around but not for prominent citizens, especially those attending a well publicised event where Gov't officials are present!

Representatives are present, but that the reason why nobody would check visa of attendants :-)
And there are no internal borders or visa check between Schengen countries..
I will check the law, but I guess it's not neccesary to have visa for every schengen country, 1 is enough .. so with visa to France, he can travel freely in all schengen countries.
It wouldn't make sense otherwise, because there no border checks..
UK is not in Schengen treaty, so there is check in tunnel or airports, but most mainland countries are in Schengen treaty.

In my humble opinion, we should now have reached 'Peak Oil'. So, it is high time to close this critical chapter in the history of international oil industry and bid the mighty 'Peak' farewell.

True, true...

But since I have been somewhat familiar with his prediction for 2006/2007, I found it startling to hear him word it like this...

Say, for example, you expect a train scheduled for a 11:20 arrival time at your station. Unfortunately, at this particular moment due to an unfortunate series of events, you happen to be tied to the rails...

And, expecting the train, you lean your ear to the rail...and start to feel a small vibration.

Then, craning your neck, you gaze into the distance and see wisps of smoke rising...followed by the beginnings of a low and deep rumble that slowly increases in volume..

You can't see the train, but you know it's coming....

Now, with the din growing harder and harder to ignore, you gaze down the tracks and begin to see a shimmering circular light coming closer and closer....

Pretty soon you can feel your skin sensing the pulsations emanating from the rails and through the ground.

The outlines of the train become clear. The train, as all your experiences with this particular train has taught you, is travelling at a very high rate of speed....

Finally, you start to sweat and squirm. Panic begins to set in, and your breaths begin to quicken, and your jaw starts to clench... You struggle to free your wrists, but they are bound too tigthly...

The sound of the train has become deafening...The engineer sees you and lets go with a sustained ear-shattering blast of the horn...

But it's too late. The train cannot stop now. And you know it.

fortuantely for me, NSW State trains are usually late, that is of course, if they actually turn up at all, usually the shortness of breath and panic is caused by anger at knowing your going to be late for work/appointment yet again, however, your point is taken :)

I remember him saying on the radio in Australia a year or two ago "we will never get over 81mb/d". Don't forget ASPO just pushed the peak back to 2010, but hey the drama queens don't like that.
